Ordered MSI GT73VR 7RF (Titan Pro) 286UK from Amazon UK

Hey guys!
I have finally pulled the trigger!
I have ordered the laptop yesterday and today it is already preparing for shipping!
Amazon does not offer anything to upgrade and only ship preproduced laptops, but at least they do that fast (unless you are unlucky and they only have it in stock at a remote warehouse)

My specs:
MSI GT73VR 7RF

• Processor: Kabyle Core i7-7820HK+CM238
• Memory: DDR IV 16GB*2 /Total of 32 GB/
• Storage: Super Raid 4-512GB NVMe SSD (256GB*2)+1TB (SATA) 7200rpm
• Display: 17.3" FHD, Anti-Glare (1920*1080) eDP 120Hz Vivid Colour 94% (I)
• Graphics: NVidia Geforce GTX 1080 inc 8GB GDDR5X
• OS: Windows 10

I hope MSI does not have non-GSync 120 Hz screens and mine will also support G-Sync. (No info regarding this on the product page)
Everything else, including thermal paste is stock, I hope the stock paste is good enough for it to still produce temps which does not make it throttle.

The reason why I wen't with Amazon and no other EU or US seller is simply because of price/support ratio. For the price I have paid Amazon offer 1 year warranty and during that time if I have any problem, even if it is just 1 stuck pixel, Amazon will replace the laptop and pay for both way shipping. Would have been nice to have the paste changed to CLU, but ordering from a seller who can do this would have cost too much extra.

The price I have paid for this laptop including shipping and 27 % (no joke!) TAX is (changed to USD) 3580 USD.
It would have been impossible to get it for this price from any other seller.
Including free gifts the best option would have been Scan UK (they have really cool gifts for this laptop), however they don't have any warranty for dead/stuck pixels so if I get a defect screen, I would have had to accept it...or go through a long and painful return procedure (where I pay a huge amount of shipping fee).

I'll just hope I will not regret it and I will have better experience than I had with the Clevo P775DM3-G ...

 

Congrats on your purchase, I'm unaware on any GT73VR that came form a standard re seller where Gsync didn't work despite the fact it wasn't listed in the specs. It's quite a beast of a laptop, enjoy.

 

Little update: I have just talked with Amazon UK and I have got a confirmation that MSI opted for an extended warranty with Amazon. In other words, Amazon does not offer their standard 1 year warranty (which they give with electronics), but instead they give 2 years warranty. So even with the smallest problem Amazon said that they will replace, repair or refund me and they pay for shipping both ways.

 

It finally shipped with UPS !

First, congrats on your purchase!

Second, the two years warranty is actually an EU law, which is -unfortunately- not enforced in Britain due to a loophole the same way it is in other European countries. Sellers are required to provide 2 years, limited warranty to their products (see: http://europa.eu/youreurope/citizens/consumers/shopping/guarantees-returns/faq/index_en.htm). Most manufacturers do so (i.e. Olympus, MSI, Gigabyte, etc) in order to offer 2 years EU-wide warranty. Others, i.e. Dell, offer warranties based on the country --in Cyprus & Greece 2 years are the standard, but in Britain you only get 1 year. I had this argument with PCWorld ages ago and at the end, they offered me a free replacement for a printer that was over one year old, but less than two.

Third, make sure you can return it to Amazon after the first 30 days. I asked them in December, when I bought an MSI GS43VR (which I returned), and I was told that laptops are not accepted for replacements. Instead, they provide repairs. Then again, knowing Amazon, they will their best to keep you happy -especially, if you have an old account.

In my limited experience, any issues will be noticeable in the first month (maybe, run a stress test during it). After that, if the laptop has a good cooling system, it should be fine --expect "consumables": batteries & SSDs or the screen panel; but this is where Amazon's warranty comes in, as they don't have tech-specialised customer support.

what is the difference between VBIOS (firmware) and firmware (EC ) ?

 

The difference between VBIOS (firmware and EC is that VBIOS is the code that handles how the graphics card works internally. when you Update the VBIOS, you are updating the GPU. These firmware updates can be fixes like raising/lowering power limits, voltages at different clockspeeds, default, idle and stages clockspeeds etc.

EC firmware is the embedded controller in the notebook that handles several functions like fan speed control, power limits etc. EC firmware fixes and updates can have things like updated fan table (so that the fan spins faster/lower at different CPU/GPU temps) as well as allow more/less power being draw from the AC adapter etc.

 

I purchased my GT73VR 7RF-286 system, with same specs as yours, yesterday evening for a price of £2599.97 from a UK shopping site called "SaveOnLaptops". So I saved myself quite a bit of cash. They also include a MSI Xmas Holiday Gaming Pack (Backpack, gaming mouse & headset) and 3 years of MSI manufacturer warranty. Should be arriving via DPD on Tuesday 18th.

I'm planning on upgrading the 1 TB hard drive to a HUGE 5 TB Seagate BarraCuda 5400 RPM hard drive though as I have a whole ton of PC titles (mostly somewhat new and latest releases) to cram into this thing, and 1 TB is not going to be enough space at all.

I had a 3 TB Seagate 5400 RPM hard drive in my last system, the GT72S which I've sold recently, and while the hard drive performed very well, the thing ran out of space fairly quickly. I just really love having loads of games, both old and new available to play at a moment's notice. It's an entertainment media centre after all.

I'll be sure to let everyone know about how I get on with the GT73VR 7RF laptop either on here or in another new thread.

 

please let me know how you will go on about fitting that 15mm Seagate 5TB HDD in your laptop

 

That 5 TB drive is not going to fit in the GT73 by virue of the fact that the connectors for the M.2 slots are mounted to the underside of the 2.5-inch bay.

 

Makes sense. Guess I'll have to settle for a 7mm 2TB Seagate hard drive then, at least until I can afford to purchase M.2 SSD hard drives. It's a big shame that the 15mm 5 TB won't fit, as I'd love to have that much storage space available.

The Seagate 3 TB 5400 RPM hard drive I had in my previous laptop, the GT72S, was 15mm. So I have to admit that it's a little odd that I can't purchase the same hard drive and have it installed in the GT73VR. Hmm, disappointing.

I think a 7 mm 2TB hard drive is the best spin-point storage I'm going to be able to get for the GT73VR. At least if we're just talking about standard spin-point hard drives and not the the hugely expensive SSD drives.

 

If MSI had seen fit to include a second bay to the left of the current M.2/2.5-inch arrangement, it's entirely possible that the thicker drive would work.

Guys. Need a little help in deciding which 2TB hard drive would be best to upgrade to from the default 1TB hard drive in the GT73VR 7RF-286

The Barracuda model or the standard one. Both are 7 mm so I know they'll fit in the bay.

Never mind. Decided that I'm going to upgrade the standard 1 TB hard drive to a 2 TB Seagate FireCuda SSHD hybrid hard drive. Seems to be a far better option, and it's 7 mm, so it'll fit with no problems.

 

If you're using the hard drive for game/media storage, a SSHD won't really do you any good. Better to spend less money on a regular drive.
