I've had laptops where you needed to use the brands drivers because of Optimus, etc. I have a GE72 2QD and as far as I know, this isn't necessary ... Can I just use the latest NVIDIA driver instead of whatever MSI has released?

MSI never updates their driver on the official website...
Actually there is no reason to download it from them since I don't believe there is any customisation.JeanLegi likes this. -

I like using the MSI drivers as a baseline, you know the originals were tested with systems and work, so if you have a problem with a newer one, going to the ones from the MSI can help in those cases.KY_BULLET likes this. -

I'm actually using Custom Nvidia drivers from Xtreme G (Tweakforce) : Good fps in the games I play and no stuttering. Website is down but still active on reddit.

I'm really not willing to go with the generic drivers, as the drivers thru MSI have been tested to work properly, apparently ... possibly by someone who was ether drunk or high........ -

Yeah the legendary MSI drivers team forgot to add the nVIDIA Control panel in their latest 398.35 driver, nothing surprising from the most unprofessional drivers team in the world!

After checking around and attempting to update the Nvidia drivers, I'm starting to get the impression MSI didn't include, or pulled the control panel from the update so it wouldn't load. 398.82 WHQL is the official latest.
guru3d Forum, they don't even list it there, they have gone to the 398.98 Hotfix: r398_75-11 drivers.

These are HotFix Drivers, not WHQL Drivers.
