Ohhh No! Boot Loop! GPU or BIOS

Sup guys just picked up a gt70 2pe dominator pro ms-1763 that has the dreaded boot loop ;( Battery charges, white power button LED turns on but nothing on lcd screen or HDMI. This is my first "gaming" laptop and I had a couple of questions.

1) If I remove the GPU from the motherboard, should this laptop still have onboard video? Is the system usable without the 8gb card?

2) from the research I did it seems the "boot loop" is caused by a faulty bios eeprom, is this something I can order from MSI?

I should also mention I am not using the official charger for it. It came with an igo 65w charger when the OEM is 180w

 

First of all get a 180W charger, 65W is absolutely not enough. Then see if it still does boot with a blackscreen.

 

Ok new 180w power adapter is in the mail. So when it comes in I'll give it every opportunity to do it's thing. But if I still get no screen reboot loop, I would like to remove the GPU. Now with the GPU removed will the system be usable? Or is it designed to need the GPU for a successful boot up? I would like to get the system up and running because it looks like the original owner spared no expense on it. Where would I be able to sell this 8gb video card? I am not really a gamer and don't think I will need it

 

You can sell the card on ebay.

Without GPU it will spin fans 100% and such, that being said you could always purchase a very cheap card on ebay to use it as a placeholder.

 

As Danishblut mentioned, without a GPU/GPU failure detected, the system will use the igpu and will turn the fans at 100%. This is an annoying "bug" of sorts, but aside from the loud noise, the system should be usable. I had a barebones GT70 with a dead GPU for a while and I could use it no problems.

 

So...only power button and led lights up but nothing happens ? Not even the fans turn on?
Is the laptop charger led working ?

If not even the fans turn on, but all LEDs (including battery charger) works, that means the bios is probably ok.

I would guess the ec is damaged.

First of all try a cmos reset.

To do this hold the power button for about 1 minute, after that let it go and turn on the laptop. The bios will reset and rewrite the EC.

If this does not help, I would try changing the cmos battery.

During the modding process of my Acer G5 I have seen a similar issue caused by a short circuited damaged cmos battery.
Changing the battery resolved the problem.

If nothing above help, then unfortunately you need to get the original bios dump from someone in .bin format and flash it with an spi programmer.

 

As I already mentioned its more than likely his charger. Non standard 65W charger isn't going to be enough.

 

Should I consider me as lucky - my GTX680M died but doesn't disturb my GT70 any way. Even the fan is quiet. And as I got a new GT73VR I do use the oldie for surfing.

 

Thats awesome then, because it was presicely the 680M that died in my GT70 barebones. Do you think it might have been patched later?

 

No idea, my 680M has sort of soft death, it's still recognized by Windows and GPU-Z and lets drivers to be installed but with 0 MHz and trying to use it causes instant kernel error.

 

Maybe that was the difference. Despite being dead it was still recognized, just not usable. If I remember correctly the whole fan at 100% was caused at BIOS level so maybe the bios could still see the GPU even if not in use, and that helped not use the fan at 100%.

Thanks guys, I figured there would have to be a video signal even if the GPU card was removed, otherwise what is the point of having onboard video?Still waiting for stuff to come in the mail. Just curious would I be able the flash the bios with a spi programmer without removing the chip from the motherboard? I do get the fans to come on, and the battery charging circuit does work but that's about it.
