Nope, it's not a problem. The 650m is still a good card with the slower GDDR3 memory. I just thought I should mention it because if you're looking for the highest graphical performance with that card you'd want the GDDR5 memory. The difference is likely not to be too drastic anyway.

Where do you see that the max is 8GB? I only see 16GB max on every source I can find. Even on the second page of the thread you posted the guy posts a photo of two brand new 8GB sticks, presumably they are for his new laptop.

Hrm the only place I've seen it say up to 16gb is the manual, this presss release from them says up to 8gb, MSI Global ? News

I saw that guys post about ram but the pic was to blurry for me to be sure they were 8gigs.

Does the chart on the above page mean up to 8gig size per slot? Hope so, want to run a lab on this when I'm not gaming

Eh, press releases are probably one of the most unreliable sources of information. They most definitely meant 8GB per slot. All the boutique shops that have this model for configuration let you order 16GB. The guy who does the mini-review ordered his with 8GB, so it seems logical that his upgrade was 2x8GB sticks. In his invoice you can see that the item ordered is an 8GB stick.

There's no way that a laptop with the most up to date chipset just released has a max of 8GB.

That's awesome to know. I'm going to order myself 2x8GB, I had it in the cart at newegg but removed it because I wasn't 100% sure.

Thanks for the info, can't wait for tomorrow :). To bad the wife and I have baby delivery classes until 8pm tomorrow argh!

Sorry this took so long autobulb....things got hectic at work!

I only had time to do PCUID and Furmark:

FurMark (Burn-in benchmark 1920x1080 with AA off) read a score of 960, 10 FPS and a max temp of 75 Celsius.

During this test CPUID read a min temp of 45 Celsius (after watching an hour long series) and a max of 83 Celsius.

I couldn't open the other link you offered and don't have time at the moment...just wanted to give you what I could because I know it sucks to wait!

    Hope this helps!

I've been discussing this model with GenTech PC, and they told me that their GE60 shipment has been delayed due to the GTX 660M being added. They're expecting it "in June" now.

Question for those of you who are about to get your shiny new GE60/GE70: How is the S-Bar? It seems like I've heard nothing good about it at all, but there's always hope they've improved it with a new version. Specifically I'm wondering...
    1) Is that star icon on the desktop still un-hideable?
    2) If you shut it down, what stops working? I know you lose the hotkeys above the keyboard, but I've also read about cases in which the optical drive can't be opened without S-Bar running.

This is my new laptop in years so all I could compare the noise to was my desktop (AMD X3 445, ATI 5770, 3 Gigs RAM, 2 HDDs) and my old Toshiba L20 laptop. All I can say is that the GE70 is MUCH quieter than both and that the noise was something I barely noticed. Ive just ordered a Coolermaster Notepal EroStand as I'm a firm believer in getting hardware to run as cool as possible.

From what I understand (I got my model without an optical drive...no one really uses them in S.Korea so they give you an SSD slot and an external ODD), and can see from GT70 reviews the GE70 does not have an eject button on the optical drive. You have to do it through windows or the s-bar.

Oh right, Windows can eject it too. I forgot that part. Thanks for pointing that out.

I did some more looking and it seems that while the GT70 and GE70 don't have eject buttons on their drives, the GT60 and the GE60 (the one I want) both DO. That's a little odd, but I think it answers that part of my question.

I agree, its pretty silly to not have something as basic as an eject button...but fortunately I don't have to deal with that, having the external ODD and all! Putting in that SSD was DEFINITELY worth it!

Also, there is the standard pin hole for manual ejecting which kinds helps but is less than ideal for ejecting while in DOS or booting up.

My personal opinion is that the screen is great and that it really is as "anti-glare" screen. I'm also satisfied with the build quality and feel that it is pretty sturdy. I think its spot on for the asking price. One small thing that I was unhappy about was that the NVIDIA, Intel, THX and MSI stickers were a little skew. Not a train smash but it would have been nice if they were stuck on straight.
The keyboard leaves a little to be desired in my book though. I would have liked a back-lit keyboard and I am finding the keys a little 'flat' if that makes sense...but do do think that like any new keyboard one just needs to get used to the feel. I usually have something to complain about with every new keyboard I get as it is always different from the last one that I was used to.

Still, overall, I am very happy with it for what I paid.

Am I blind? Why can I not find the vanilla 650m drivers on the NVIDIA website? The auto detect feature says I need to use the MSI drivers but I wanted to use Mobility Modder to update them...unless someone can suggest a better program?

Meaker, you can find a photo of the internals on a Singapore notebook forum link I and someone else posted earlier in this thread. It's also the first thing that comes up when you search for "MSI GE60" on google.com.

South_valhalla, do you know what version SATA the HD and ODD ports are? The chipset supports 6gbps but sometimes manufacturer's skimp on the ports to save money, especially the ODD port.

If you have the Intel Rapid Storage application installed you can check from in there.

Have my laptop at work today. Let me know if you have any questions or want me to run anything specific. Whoever asked about the removal of the software that controls the special functions, it was very easy to uninstall.

I actually love the keyboard but so far I am hating the mouseclick button. It's one solid button and I prefer seperate buttons rather than a solid button with a pivot point.

so far though everything else has been great.

I really don't have anything to compare the sound to. To me it sounds excellent for a laptop. Right now I'm fighting with it, trying to figure out why it can't even play the opening cinematics for diabloIII. It trys but just lags like crazy

Does the touchpad on this support scrolling from the side of the mousepad, or does it REQUIRE that you use the multigesture type of scrolling (two finger etc.).

Also can we get some more temp reports from anyone who owns this? Temperature at idle, just with office tasks (surfing/word processing) etc.?

did the 15minute burn in test 1280x1080 with furmark

I haven't really even gone past the first area they put you in with diablo. Been to busy playing around with other things and getting the laptop configured how I want it....that and the wifes honeydo list :)

I have diablo on all high settings and it seems really smooth so far.

Furmark took it up to 83C, hardware monitor is saying max of 85C, but only 2 minutes after it's back down in the 58 area.

When playing BF3 and with a Coolermaster ErgoStand the CPU cores can get up to 92 Celsius. The G-card stays around 74-75 Celsius. Is this OK? I'm used to my desktop CPU that never gets above 65 Celsius.

Can some one recommend a way for me to install the latest NVIDIA drivers? The auto update feature on the site says I need to get drivers from MSI.

90 feels a bit high but it seems normal for these chips at a high load.

I would wait a few days/weeks on the drivers since this graphics card is still pretty damn new. If you search for beta drivers you'll see that the 670 and 675 are supported but not the 650 yet. It seems likely they'll add it eventually.

Should I be purchasing a cooling pad? I plan on playing with it on my lap at home since I have a baby coming and won't have much time to lock myself in a room.

I'm with both of you on this one. If the TDP numbers I've seen (45W for the 650M, 75W for the 660M) are real, then I'll definitely want the 650M version. The performance difference between those two sure doesn't seem worth it. Here's hoping that the GE60 with a 660M is just a separate version and not a replacement. Unfortunately, I've seen MSI pull a model off the market and replace it after only a few weeks before. Fingers crossed...

Are there any direct gt 650m GDDR5to gtx 660m comparisons?

On notebook check, some games actually run in more fps on the 650m than the 660m, i'm sure these are mistakes. We don't know much about the 660m. If the difference is greater than 7-8%, i might wait for the gtx 660m to appear in the ge60, otherwise i will buy the 650m asap.
