I plan to upgrade from the G73 in the spring. I've mostly been looking a Sager units ranging from the NP8652 to the NP9377. I did notice this at the microcenter near me, so it has been added to my short list.

    MSI GT72 2QE Dominator Pro-211 17.3" Laptop Computer - Aluminum Black GT72 DOMINATOR - Micro Center

All my gaming laptops have been off the shelf units and I've had excellent luck so far and if I'm really lucky, it may even be a little cheaper in April.

So what do you guys think of it?

Nothing wrong with off-the-shelf. Got my GS60 at my local MemoryExpress and it's still working perfectly fine. Temps and performance were all up-to-par with reviews from notable retailers.

The only thing I don't like is the 2nd Drive bay is a dud. mSATAs are too much.

Don't you have to reboot the system to switch between graphics cards because of the lack of Optimus support in the GT72?

Too much? Do you mean in price? These are m.2 SSDs but even then the difference between the m.2 variant and the standard 2.5 inch is... sometimes nonexistant. I mean you can find 128GB-480GB SSDs in both 2.5 inch sizes and m.2 format that both cost the same.

The lack of optimus is actually a feature. The pro of having such a switch is having uncompromising performance from the dedicated GPU. While not having optimus can be seen as a hassle to some, these high end notebooks aim for the best gaming performance, which is why they allow it to be disabled.

I wish my notebook lacked Optimus support. Before I reset it to factory settings, I had a strange problem with Optimus where it would use the integrated graphics if I had a youtube video open and would continue to use integrated graphics even if I launched a game while I had said youtube video open at the same time.

A quick question; I bought the 682UK model with 8GB RAM, if I needed to upgrade that to 16GB and run in dual channel; I'd have to completely disassemble the unit to get to slot #2?

8GB is plenty for what I do but - just in case...

I think opposite channel is enough, my GT70 has them on #2 and #3 I think (one under the kb, one under the PCB) and shows dual channel.

Yes if the ram is installed under the keyboard you can pair it with an opposite channel under the main hatch to get dual channel.

Ahh thanks - it's one of those things you probably should check before you buy and don't.

It's just I saw some reviews reporting 16GB of RAM running dual channel and because you can't see any modules when the back is removed I assumed to run dual channel I'd have to use the slot under the keyboard which is a bit of a mission.

In typical desktop style motherboards you have to install the RAM in specific slots to use dual channel.

You don't always have to actually, but they will advise you to do it.
