I can answer the first question: You don't need more than 8gb or ram. Only get more if you are planning on running VMs or have applications which use up a lot of memory. For games and normal apps 8 gb is more than enough.

Yes, the PowerPro R 12:17 comes with an ExpressCard slot :)

EDIT...what...was I drunk? No, the PowerPro R 12:17 does NOT come with an ExpressCard slot.

I'm debating between MSI GT780DX-406 or the PowerPro R 12:17:

    Both have the same specs:
    17.3" 1920x1080 Matte screen
    Intel Core i7-2670QM
    16GB RAM
    1.5GB GTX 570M
    500GB 7200 HDD
IC Diamond Thermal Compound applied to CPU + GPU
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-Bit

So, my decision lies in the fact that these are offered by 2 different sellers, and the price for the MSI GT780DX-406 is $18 less after mail in rebate.

What do you guys recommend? The only thing I'm nervous about is that I never owned an MSI before, and not sure how good the cooling system is (which is why I want the thermal compounds added). Does the MSI GT780DX-406 have 2 fans (1 for GPU, 1 for CPU)? If anyone here owns an MSI GT780 - how happy are you with the product? I see in this forum that the owners of the PowerPro R 12:17 are extremely satisfied with the product.

Also, Does the MSI GT780DX-406 have an ExpressCard slot?

The Gt78x & MS-1761 has a single fan for both the cpu & gpu. Cooling with the single fan is not a problem. Neither of these models have an express card slot available.

We actually sell both models, and since IC Diamond applied to CPU + GPU is FREE on the PowerPro R 12:17 when you upgrade to the Intel® i7-2670QM, the PowerPro R 12:17 is cheaper, not more, than the MSI GT780DX-406.

Both are built on the same chassis so you can expect the same quality from either model, but neither have an ExpressCard slot...those are pretty hard to find these days. For what would you use an ExpressCard?

The advantage of the MSI GT780DX-406 is the Steelseries backlit keyboard and the longer standard warranty...the advantage of the PowerPro R 12:17 is that all of your support and warranty is handled by PowerNotebooks.com, and the slightly lower price.

Both the whitebook and branded models are usually released at the same time.

    @paladin44 and robm

Does the 1761 have an express card slot or not? Each of you said something different.

I was going to use the ExpressCard slot for a SmartCard (ID-1) reader, but since it doesn't have a slot, I can use an external (USB) SmartCard reader.

Hello everyone. I just ordered the laptop on my sig from Donald. Any opinions on the steelseries keyboard? Is it really worth it? I only have till tom as this will be an addition to my currently being assembled setup.

Or is a BD drive a better upgrade? Or a nicer screen (considering i will be hooking this up to an external monitor/hdtv)?

    I wanna get a PowerPro R 12:17 with Intel Core i7, 12GB RAM...

I am debating between the GTX 570M and the GTX 670M. The price difference is only $75 more for the 670M.

    I figure I'll either go with GTX 570M and 12GB 1600MHz RAM,
    or
GTX 670M and 12GB 1333MHz RAM (to keep the price balanced for my budget).

    Any thoughts?

You can go for 570M, because 670M is only rebranded 570M with higher clocks. You can rise clocks of 570M using MSI afterburner. Save 75$ for other upgrades :D

Can you wait to see what's announced on the 29th and when the products announced will be available for shipping?

You didn't say what your budget is?

Get the best GPU you can afford at the time of purchase;it's not worth doing later.A rebadged GPU is not really an upgrade.

    Which CPU?2670?

    8GB DDR3-1333 is enough memory.

    Wireless card?

    Warranty,1 year or 3 years?

    OS?

All of you have great points. I was referring to Intel Core i7 2670QM, Wireless + Bluetooth, 2 years warranty + 1 year accidental (MSI standard), 500GB 7200rpm HDD, combo dvd-r/rw/dl drive, Windows-7 Home 64-Bit.

My budget is (was) $1,400. I liked your idea about best GPU for the budget and against rebadged GPUs.

I ended up going with the MSI GT780DX-406, had an awesome deal (came with GTX 570M and free upgrade from 8 to 16GB RAM.

    p.s.
You mentioned new products will be announced in the 29th - are you referring to the ASUS G75 or something else? I'm just curious, but already bought my gaming laptop :)

    Best of luck with it.

I hope you bought it from one of the resellers that are always helpful on these MSI forums.

I'm very happy with my GT780DX.

As soon as I got mine I clean installed Windows 7 x64 with the newest drivers,MSI utilities and current software.

I was referring to MSI GT70 models with Ivy Bridge CPUs that are under NDA until the 29th when Intel will let the cat out of the bag.

I'm not a fan of Asus gaming notebooks because of the chipset and GPU they have used and now soldering it into the motherboard.

I bought this model of computer but comparatively cheaper... and with a 580m, 8 GB of ram, and a 2670QM...

Very excited, shipped a few days ago.

This post is quite old, but still relevant for me =P

    Hi

Did anyone try to update the firmware and bios of the MSI 1761 with GT780 files ? That might make the TDE work.

I've done this on a MSI EX720, upgraded the CPU, GPU firmware and bios transforming it into a GX720.

    Risky but it worked.
