Hello, my name is Max, and I've just purchased the MSI GT627 for at least my first two years in college after about a month of research on laptops. I have analyzed all of the Pros and Cons of the laptop, as I wanted to make the most informed purchase for this laptop.
There are plenty of threads out there and on this forum about individual problems, questions, etc. about the GT627, but as someone looking for specialized information on this laptop alone, I thought it would be good if GT627 owners, modders, and veterans could all work together in order to link every possible piece of information they think any new user should know. I'll be updating this post and the posts below that I will save for myself.
As a soon-to-be GT627 owner, I have a few questions of my own I'd like to have answered. I consider myself a tech-savvy computer owner, but I've never had to upgrade to a higher version of Windows because I've been content with the amount of RAM I run on my desktop. I know the GT627-216 version comes with Windows Vista x32 already on the computer. Can someone either post or link SPECIFIC instructions for the new laptop user for upgrading to Windows Vista x64 and/or to Windows 7 x64 from a x32 bit platform. This includes links to all functioning x64 drivers, required devices including USB drives, etc.
Also, clarification regarding those people who say they're running Windows 7. If Windows 7 isn't released till October, are people only running the Beta version? Or has it already been released for those participating in the free upgrade?
Below, I will post links to topics regarding fixes to problems like switching Fn and Ctrl keys, and reinforcing the keyboard flex.

Fixes to commonly mentioned problems with the MSI GT627 Laptop
Fn and Ctrl Keys
The Problem: The Fn and Ctrl key in the bottom left hand corner of the keyboard are in opposite positions of most other keyboard designs.
The Fix: Switch the functions of the Fn and Ctrl keys in the bottom left corner of the keyboard.

Note: You need an MSI forum account in order to view the link. I have not tested this fix and cannot be held responsible for what these links may do to your computer. I will do more research in order to guarantee these work for the GT627.
Keyboard Flex
The Problem: The keyboard installed in the GT627 flexes in toward the chassis and feels too springy for some users.
The Fix: Reinforce the keyboard by installing double sided tape between the chassis and the keyboard panel.

Note: Word around the forum is that this will NOT void your warranty, but be careful when disassembling the laptop and removing the two panels, there is a possibility, if you aren't careful, that you may damage the wiring going to the two panels. Be sure to follow the poster's instructions word for word, and again, make sure you do your research, and review the instructions BEFORE you start the process. -
