So I got a 16F3 barebone with a 675m and installed a i7 3610 processor, 8gb of ram, and a 500gb hdd. I turned it on and the screen was completely blank, not even a back light. Just black. External display shows nothing either. The only thing that happens is the fan spins full blast. I can't get it to do anything. I got the ram and processor on ebay, so I might of bought a crummy processor. But wouldn't the screen and back lit keyboard at least light up even if the cpu was bad? I'm sending it in to MSI and they're supposedly going to check everything. They'll install a mobo if thats the problem, or if one of my components is the problem they'll tell me. Should I try anything though first? Do you think its the mobo?

    - Clear the CMOS by disconnecting the power cord, remove the battery and press the power button repeatedly for 10-15 seconds.
    - Try booting up the laptop with each RAM module separately.
    - Reseat the processor. Make sure the locking screw's slot is parallel to the nearby heatsink mount.

I tried doing each ram slot separate, I'll try the cpu next. Thanks.

Tired it, still not turning on. It must be the video card or cpu. Or bad mobo from msi.

If you're not in a rush, I was going to suggest getting a Pentium B950 off eBay for $10-$15 to see if it would boot...that would at least help take the CPU out of the equation.

I think I'm just going to send it in with the parts in it and they'll tell me. It seems kind of sketchy though. I don't want to send it in with $300 worth of parts I bought and then get it with nothing... and I don't have any proof the parts were in there.

Lock the cpu in by twisting the screw on the socket?

No beep codes? The presence or absence of them would help you in troubleshooting. Not sure if there is a speaker connection for an external mobo speaker though - or one integrated already.

Yes, it is locked and the line on the lock is parallel to the heatsink.

No beeping or anything, nothing seems it is being controlled. No lights at all, no back light even. CD drive will open and fan runs full blast, thats about it. Could I really buy a cpu that would fit into this laptop though to test if I need to ask for a refund on ebay? Also when I get home I'll take the ram out and test it in another laptop just to make sure thats working and narrow it down to cpu, mobo, or gpu.

Any 2 or 3 series CPU would work so 2310M or the like for a cheap chip.

I had a bad memory module cause a system to not POST and cause the fans to rev so high I thought they were going to lift the system into the air (and this was a Dell Optiplex SFF desktop, mind you). So yes, check the memory.

Well I put the RAM in a different computer and it worked perfectly, so it's not that. The guy I got the CPU from says he pulled it out of a working alienware as soon as he got it. So I'm down to thinking its just a faulty motherboard. And I'm not sure if this is right, but if you were to take the CPU out of the motherboard or it had a bad CPU wouldn't it give some sort of beep code?

Most laptop mainboard doesn't have beep code like desktop mainboards.

Try take out the CPU and check all the pins and reassemble the CPU to the mainboard and make sure it's locked.

Well I already have an RAM for the notebook and I'm sending it back. I really need to find a place that tests mobile CPUs just to make sure. I tired many times, taking it out, checking it, locking it... nothing works. The CPU should be fine, all pins are strait and it came out of a new Alienware...
