MSI GX680 GT555 video card. This happens frequently after the machine sits overnight. When I come to use it it starts out with small dots, then right away it progresses to full screen and the machine stops responding and I end up doing a hard reset. Its happened at least 5 times since the computer was bought. I dont overclock the vid card and I am using the stock vid driver. I tried the latest WHQL driver and had the same issue. I even ran driver cleaner and still get this problem.

have you tried monitoring the temperatures of your video card when you leve it overnight? very high temperatures often create artifacts and or crash the system.

it could also be driver issues especially with screensavers. on my g50vt it used to crash everytime it started the pictures screensaver but it was fixed by updating to newer drivers.

Ya I was able to check it after I rebooted and it was 41C so I dont think thats an issue. On my XPS1730 the graphics cards would take a long time to cool down if they were overheated. Say around 95C, it would still be in the high 80s after a reboot and take several minutes to get to normal after that.

The laptop doesnt sleep, but the screen is off and there are no GPU apps left open that should cause this issue. I have a Toshiba with an GTX460 and it has never done this, ever. The GT555 is based on the GF106 core with only a 128 bit bus. Rather than the 192 the GTX460 uses.

well watching after watching your vid, I still dont quite understand or comprehend your problem haha.

well my g50vtx5 used to get white screens where the computer is still running and all programs are running fine. it was because of a loosened flex causing loss of color to the monitor, a hard restart always fixed it.

if its not causing harm to your computer you can probably look away from the problem. maybe future releases of gpu drivers will fix it.

Heres the problem, it was freezing and articating and made windows unuseable. I had to reset the computer to get it to restart.

Too bad nvidia cards don't have thermal sensors on that hot gddr5!

Don't have flash installed atm but I think that is what I saw when my 5850 hit over 90c on one thermal sensor.

Your card likely has vRAM on the backside. Maybe now you have a reason to return it. Sounds like someone messed up the cooling to me.

Yes you are probably correct. I looked at GPU-Z logfile and the hours leading up to these failures appear everything was perfectly normal. Clocks were at minimum and temp was like 35C. Occasionaly I would get screen anomalys that would not cause lockup, but a reboot would fix it. Maybe it has a bad memory chip that rears its ugly head once in a while.

    Yeah.

Well the card could be OK. You see, when vRAM artifacts, unlike a GPU it doesn't always mean there is damage.

VRAM will artifact just because of heat, without there being any damage. The GPU core is damaged if it is causing the artifacting. Pretty sure.
In any case I'd take a look at it myself... could be as simple as a loose screw.

There is a sticker on the back of the notebook "warranty void if removed". THats another reason I want to return this laptop. I am scared of companys, they see the label removed and void warranty regarless of the issue. Its an easy way out for them. Plus who know what happens in the future, they may change managers and a new manager might say No warranty if label removed.

I would look into getting an MSI barebones like the 16F2, no warranty void stickers and gaudy lights.

Would you mind posting a GPU-Z screenshot of this 555M?
