Need some help with MSI G60 Ghost Pro (002) and an external monitor

Having some issues when connecting my G60 Ghost Pro to an external monitor (Asus PG279Q)..

Using a Display Port, I'm unable to see any options to change the refresh rate from within the Nvidia Control panel, the option is not there. I also can't enable G-Sync.... What am I doing wrong?

Check your Intel HD Graphics Control Panel for the refresh rate for other monitors. That model doesn't have G-Sync on the laptop screen, so I'm not sure if G-Sync is going to show up in the Nvidia control panel because of that (I can't remember chekcing that for that specific model).

 

Thanks Pat... I understand the screen doesn't support G-Sync but the 970M does...

What I'm trying to achieve is to be able to use an external monitor that does support G-Sync and 144hz... trying to only use the external monitor but because of Intel Optimus (I guess) I cannot use Nvidia Control panel to change Display Settings (the options aren't there)

Also, the refresh rate on the intel properties does not work... i lose signal when selecting 144hz.....

Is there a way around this? I'd love to use my external monitor's capabilities to game.... makes sense?

 

I got some bad news (I hope I'm wrong though) but you won't be able to use gsync with such laptops because the GPU needs to communicate directly with the connected display. It's why gsync capable laptops don't use optimus.

I wish optimus would just go away to be honest, or at least nvidia and intel should get together and fix all the issues associated with this intel + nvidia gpu combination (external res issues, diagonal tearing with windowed apps, etc). Doesn't help that nvidia or intel fails to acknowledge any of these issues despite them being such obvious problems that's been around for a while now.

 

Is there anything lower than 144hz, like 120hz that you could try?

 

DP is GPU-direct connectivity.
Try setting your external display as your primary display, close the laptop screen and disable it.
Make sure all drivers are up-to-date.

 

Woah, I didn't know that. Does this affect how optimus works though?

 

It does not, check the color of LED on the power button and verify whether it changes between blue and orange.
Blue = Intel Graphics
Orange = Nvidia GPU

 

Optimus works by routing the dgpu over the igpu, that way the igpu is always used and you are limited to its refresh rate among other things. It is the reason why gsync doesn't work with optimus. But as far as I remember, some ports are directly connected to the dgpu, so it doesn't go through the igpu and thus you can use external gsync, like with GT72 and GT80 and some ports of the GT60/70s.

I am not sure if GS60 has any port directly to the dgpu, but if it does, it should be the mini display port.

 

I need to try this then. I wonder if that would resolve some of the craziness I think is caused by optimus (diagonal tearing).

 

Well, tested and saw no difference between hdmi, mini dp and using the laptop screen, I still run into the same issues . Hope the display port helps solve the OP's issue though.
