Wait until the new notebooks are out. RTX notebooks are going to drop prices.

Other than that WT 75 is a nice notebook.

I believe MSI had all their new laptops already shown at CES and the GT75 was the top end model, i9 / 2080. Enless their is some secret GT83 with 2080 SLI idk lol.

New models where announced. Despite having the same name (GS65, GT75 etc) they have either small or big changes. New machines generally all sport RTX GPUs, and some like the GS75 are entirely new models. The GS65 got a bit changed chassis, bigger touchpad and perhaps cooling pipes added?

If you are into high end machines, it's probably the best to use a GT75, as it will have the max performance you expect from your machine. Almost every other non GT will use either a lower end GPU or a Max Q version, and will have more limits in power or thermals.

Sadly the RTX GPUs will not be a good jump in performance, imo, but still a single RTX 2080 should be good enough imo.

Do you think I will see a big jump in performance going from my system with a GTX 1080 to the same system with the same CPU but with the RTX 2080 or not worth it in your opinion?

the one thing that temps me other than the upgraded GPU is the 144hz screen.

From all the news I have seen regarding the new RTX GPUs, you will probably see anywhere from 10 to 25% performance upgrade, but it will depend on how limited they implement the laptop versions. The Max Q line sounds very VERY limited, being only 20% faster than a max Q 1080.

BUT! Since the GT75 uses the full 2080, the performance advantage will be good for high refresh rate and high resolution, so you might consistently see 20% or more performance upgrade. I'd say its worth it, but thats because I do use a 4K monitor hahaha and I expect a bigger improvement there over my OC'd 1080.

To be honest with you, I've been using 60hz or 75hz screens for a while now. the 75hz screen I could feel a big difference going from 60hz then I got excited seeing that my GT73VR Titan Pro and GT75 Titan have a 120hz screen but I never felt the smoothness of that 120hz. I don't know if it's the screen that MSI choose which is crap or what but man the other day I was at the mall and saw some cheap Huawei 15 inch laptop, I didn't check its refresh rate, it had a glossy screen rather than matte but man, it was buttery smooth, like on a whole different level of smoothness and I felt kinda jealous that an entry level laptop has a screen that is night and day better than mine.

I do notice the difference with our 120hz screens, compared to regular and 75hz ones, but it is true that it is not the best display and that some of the new 144hz are better, not only due to higher refresh but response time, reducing ghosting, and more.

If these new models are also packing new GPUs and new Screens, we are going to see a decent bump in quality, even if performance is a smaller jump.

IIRC the 18" models usually lag the others in terms of announcement and release. While I haven't heard anything about them I'd guess there will be an RTX version eventually. Whether they get a better panel will likely determine whether I recommend them.

If I remember correctly, the limit of the bigger 18 machines was that there isnt a big enough market for that particular size, so there arent as good or varied panel options right? I liked MSI GT80 series and the idea, but since SLI had really dwindled including how only the RTX 2080/ti support it and not the lower end GPUs, I think the GT8X line will either die or evolve into something else.

Imo they should make the GT8X line their full desktop monster, and single GPU. Change it so that they use socketed CPUs and the higher end single full GPU. I believe 18 inchers would only have 4K screens as option instead of high refresh, but the best would be a high refresh 1440p panel.

I love the GT83's size but as long as it has that 60hz crappy panel I won't touch it

That's pretty much exactly it, while they're popular and sell pretty well, I don't think they move in enough volume to incentivize really good but still affordable panels for them.

you are right. the GT83 is very good but as you said the 60hz panel is bad

It's not bad, its simply outdated. It was okay almost 4 years ago. At this point every competitor either has a sharper, faster or better looking panel, so its definitely a disadvantage.

Panel aside, would you opt for a GT83 with a 8850H and a gtx 1080 sli when compared to a clevo p775 with a 9900k and an rtx 2080. Both are priced around $3000 right now and I was wondering what would be a better pick for somebody using it for more intensive modeling/simulations (primary use) and moderate gaming (secondary use).

My concern with the p775 is the thermal heating of the 9900k (seems difficult enough to cool it down in a desktop, let alone on the "thinnest 17-inch desktop replacement" as sager seems to claim on their website), which might prevent the 9900k from reaching its true potential. Thoughts or suggestions would be useful as I am deciding on which one to pick for my next laptop. Thanks!

If you get it from HIDevolution with their thermal mods like Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut + Fujipoly Extreme thermal pads then you will be fine. They are also a Prema Partner so you will get the Prema BIOS for free which is a MUST on Clevo laptops.

    Prema BIOS Benefits:

    • Restores user ability to overclock or underclock the CPU
    • Restores user control over CPU power settings (voltage, watts, amps) for optimal performance and/or thermal efficiency
    • Restores ability to control non-turbo CPU core ratio
    • Restores ability to control CPU c-states and p-states
    • Restores ability to control BCLK (northbridge) and FCLK (System Agent) frequency
    • Restores ability to enable Intel Speed Shift Technology functionality
    • Restores ability to disable Intel Software Guard Extensions (SGX) functionality which is intended for software developers who want to use that feature and causes erratic system behavior
    • Restores ability to control RSR, Watchdog Timer, ASPM, ACPI sleep and hibernation functionality
    • Restores ability to control RAM timings, clock speeds and enables the utilization of XMP profiles
    • Restores ability to control selection of Legacy, UEFI and CSM to install whatever operating system is desired
    • Restores ability to control CPU-based DEP, AES (encryption) and Virtualization
    • Restores ability to control GPU scaling, PCIe speed and power management features
    • Restores control over Thunderbolt and USB 3.1 configuration
    • Restores control over SATA port configuration and Intel LPM. Having the ability to disable drive ports allows exclusive control over what drive receives the BCD/boot sector, system and recovery partitions during Windows Setup and eliminates the need to physically remove non-OS drives when installing a new OS.

Nope, I would not go for the GT83 anymore. Sadly SLI is going to be dropped sooner rather than later, and for the same price you get a better processor and GPU than the GT83.

Even if the thermal performance of the Clevo is not enough for the full 9900K, its still going to be faster than any mobile i7/i9 since it is a 8 core 16 thread CPU.

You can perform actions to handle the heat in the Clevo to make it super performing, but the GT83 will be always limited in comparison. Other options against the GT83 in MSI world would be the GT75.

In that comparison the p775 wins IMO. Upgrade the thermal compound on it and it will treat you well.
