Why just not to buy GX640 and upgrade processor (although it's not really needed)?

$40 for a thermal paste upgrade... sweet Mary on a unicycle!

For that price, they didn't give you a 9-cell battery? Wifi card upgrade just for browsing the web? I'm gonna have to agree with Molius.

Maybe he can't stand the red trimming on the GX640.

GX640 with processor upgrade is more expensive if I wanted 1333 MHZ RAM too... and the GX640 has heating issues.

Edit: Oh, and GX640 has one less USB slot...

All GX640s are equipped with 1333MHz RAM from the factory.
Heating issues cannot be different between 1656 and GX640 since cases, components, fans etc. are identical.
    Since when?

Besides, 9-cell battery instead of 6 and tripple the warranty period.

P.S. Since I bought an early European version, I got MSI branded backpack and gaming mouse budled.

They use different motherboards. Check the chipsets.

I've seen no complaints about the 1656 with the PM55 chipset, yet I've seen numerous complaints about the thermal pads in the GX640 with the HM55 chipset.

That's because next to no one has the 1656.

Nothing will provide better comparison as a nice screenshot of furmark temps.
I believe only then we'll be able to judge the cooling differences between stock GX640 and 1656.

    Congrats!
I'd get the barebones version too, the RED trim is not my style.

Upon closer inspection, it seems XOTICPC's info was a bit wrong and outdated. the 1656 ID1 used PM55, but the ID5 is HM55 and is basically the same as the GX640. Do I need to add thermal paste to the GPU RAM?

dont do that. you'd need a huge glob which makes it ineffective. stick with pads
