Do you notice lower temps on your 9600m with mx-2?

I am going to order some MX-2 when I order the Hard Drive and Memory from Newegg. Just wish they didn't charge $5 to ship the dang stuff. Is it easy to replace the paste on the GPU?

mx-2 is WAY easier than as5. just put a dab on and smear even and stick the sink on. its a lot thinner than as5 so it will basically spread itself and it not conductive so you done have to worry about getting any over the edge of the die. personally what i do is use a credit card i split into 1/2" strips. i place a dap at one side and work it to the other. make sure its somewhat even but with mx-2 you do not have to be nearly as even as as5.

I just built my 1651 with T9300 CPU, and followed the guide to enable the turbo function. Everything was fine until I pressed the button. The second I press it, Turbo ON image comes up, and Vista (32-bit) freezes. When I press the dock (blue) buttons, the light turns on and off, but the laser on my mouse, connected thru USB is off. Has anyone experienced this problem? please help.

PS. I replaced a memory module with another, so it shouldn't be RAM.

    Thanks in advance

99% sure that cpu's that use a 800mhz fsb will not work with the turbo function. The turbo function seems to increase from by 15-20% clocking up from 1066MHz fsb.

    @HECTOP
You said that you have changed your memory, but with what memory - 667MHz or 800MHz? If you are using 667MHz memory sticks then this is your problem, because when you press Turbo button it increases FSB freaquince. DDR freaquince is working simulatiosly with FSB, wich means that the freaquince of the memory is increased also. Cheaper memory sticks are not overclockable (or very little overclockable) and this causes the freeze of your system.
If you use DDR 800MHz, then you should check Advanced BIOS setting to see the freaquiency of the memory. If it is set to DDR 800, set it to DDR 667, this should solve your problem. If not then it's the CPU.

It is my understanding that the MS-1651 (barebone) and the GX620 are unable to interchange BIOS. The BIOS link in the OP goes to a GX620 BIOS. Is this true?

no not at all you can use the 620 bios on the 1651 it works fine and gives you the turbo button as well after flashing but you must flash the bios and the keyboard firmware or it will not work

Out of curiosity, is there a way to go back to the 1651 firmware so the turbo button could be disabled?

Same would go for the 1722; a friend and I are running 7250s which won't OC. I wouldn't mind going back to the Turbo-disabled firmware until I get a Penryn to avoid unexpected crashes by accidentally bumping the invisible button.

I haven't been able to find anything on MSI's site for the 1651. I've had to pull all drivers from the GX620.

I would like to know where the heck you guys found the barebones chassis so cheap. I have a processor and HDD (P9500 and WD Scorpio Black) and a WiFi card, but the cheapest I can find the basic chassis is $985 at xoticpc (1680x 1050 res screen). Whats with the $600 price range you guys say you got yours at?

The turbo button is hidden right between the eco and the webcam button, you need the latest firmware installed I believe and the system control manager installed aswell.. Also what cpu are you using, I know the 800 FSB cpu's do not like the turbo feature.

How much did it cost you if you dont mind me asking?

They are great laptops, some people say the 9600m GT is not that good, There wrong, Its a preformance card and will play all games out there maybe not on the highest settings but it does great on medium settings, even maxed settings in some games. I have thrown alot of games at mine with ease.. It overclocks great to 7.2k in 3dmark06, Thats dam good for a 15.4 laptop considering the price of the laptop. Best of luck to you..

The turbo works fine as long as your using a 1066 socket P cpu. The P 8600 on up works really well. You must have the system control manager installed too..

Unfortunately the last two bios updates have removed the advanced overclock option from the bios. It is auto set to 15% overclock when you push the overclock button.

very interesting....Z-factor, please.. is it possible to upload the gx620 BIOS we are talking about ? rapidshare or megaupload will work fine for at least 90 days since upload date :) .

    more noob questions :

    1. what will you guys think if this modding applied to Q9000 45nm "Montevina" Core™2 Quad 2.0GHz 1066MHz FSB ? how much up perfromance we can expect ?

    2. is there any other competitive retailer than RK Computer carrying this barebone ? in this case, eBay is very last resource.

i wish someone will make a step by step building guide for this barebone.

    I just purchased a refurb 1651 with a t6400 2.0ghz and 9600m gt ddr3

Will this flash work the same way for my laptop? I have the button that says "ECO" and it switches between normal, gaming, video, documents, and battery save mode.... but all it does it change the power settings of the laptop instead of overclock the cpu.

I'd like to squeeze maybe at least another 200mhz or 400mhz would be nice.

    Any insight?

There is a turbo button hidden right after the ECO button.

800 fsb cpu's are not compatible with turbo mode. The turbo mode applies a overclock assuming your laptop has a 1066 fsb cpu. The alternative for you is using bios version V or older and using a tool called setfsb.

thanks for the insight. i'm relatively new at overclocking mobile cpu's but setFSB doesn't seem to do anything.

i have motherboard version A1651IMS.10V (4.7.09). Does this mean I will have to rollback bios version to be able to use setFSB? Any other alternatives?

When you boot up your laptop hit delete to access the bootup menu. Under system information it should list your bios version.

    Bios version: 1.0V

So does this mean I am able to use setFSB and if so, how do I go about overclocking? (I've tried setFSB but under CPU-Z my cpu is not affected by setFSB settings)

BTW, thanks for your help it's much appreciated.

Sorry, you need the A1651IG6.10V to use setfsb, your bios uses the turbo mode function to OC.

hmm interesting why they used the bios for turbo mode on a computer that not only does not utilize the turbo button but uses a cpu that has a 800mhz fsb which according to rorschach can't utilize the turbo button.

oh well, it's not a biggie
