this looked great until I noticed it comes with an XGA backlit screen rather than LCD backlit like most other new MSI laps. How much of a drawback is this?

XGA means screen resolution (1024x768), LCD means Liquid Crystal Display.
So you are definitely getting something wrong.
However, this notebook has a screen with a resolution of 1,366x768, so for a 14-incher screen is just fine.

LCD and LED is different isn't it?

I know CCFL is the old backlit but thats done off bulbs top and bottom or left and right,

Led backlighting im not sure how they do that, but you dont often find screen bleed on backlit led where as CCFL LCD you can ocasionally get it.
