Hi fellow NRB users!!!
I found over the official MSI forums a sub-forum for modded bios, here mods post modded bios to allow different stuff, also you can request bios mods!!!![]()
it seems that they listen to their costumers, and I want to have a core 2 quad on this lovely machine!.
So I only want to request you an EASY favor, support me on this thread : http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=133301.0 to get Core 2 quad support on our machines. ( You MUST register first!)
Even if you dont have this model I beg you to reply requesting a bios mod to allow core 2 quad on these models!.
Many other users tried to put a core 2 quad processor on these machines without luck! the machine would just not recognize the processor, I know that there is a model that suports core 2 quad, the one with DDR3 modules, but it would be cool to have this feature too!!![]()

Thank you guys!!!![]()

It also could require a hardware mod, I dont believe a bios would work to support quads. I will help you out though.
-
Thanks cobra!, I saw on these forums that the chipsets are the same, the only difference between the newer model and this one is the DDR3 ram, these laptops even share the same bios, the pinouts are the same. Someone even booted this machine with a quad but it wouldnt enter to windows!!!
-
No, im not helping you and your evil ways.
The chipset is definately capable if your refering to your 1651, its running penryn which is what the q9000 i know is also, what size is the power brick, that could be the only issue along with bios.
You've got my vote man.
Will sign up tonight when i get in! -
Thanks man!!! I have th 90W powerbrick!!!
PLEASE post there, we must show interest! I really want a q9100 inside!! -
One question, Get a bios from a 1651 GT628 and see if there is a diffrence between the 2. Its worth a shot.
-
I heard they share the same bios, (have too see if its true) and then Ill use a bios modder to check if the microcodes are the same.
-
Ok keep us updated.
-
Thank you very much catacylsm for your support!!
I just Pmd the guy that seems to mod the laptop bios´s. I hope he helps me, I would love to have a quadzilla -
been there done that...didn't go through the msi website but another bios modder website. There are one or two features that can be unlocked. Unfortunately these people only have limited knowledge on what they are doing. You should see if he can provide the unlocked features from the bios version .S to the most recent bios. If he can't even do that then your just wasting your time.

I asked this days ago to the costumer support:
Msi 1651 Quad core Support
I just got my powerful msi 1651 and I love the performance.
But I was wondering if there could be a bios mod to allow core 2 quads such as q9000,q9100,qx9300. I know that there is an edition that supports the core 2 quads the msi 1651 id2 the one that uses DDR3 ram modules, I currently have the one with DDR2 modules. I know that this machine could be able to handle a C2Q processor, it has a nice and powerful heatsink and fan, I already own a Q9100 and its working on other machine but the problem is that its bigger and I would like to use a core 2 quad solution on this small machine, Im aware that Im not the only one looking for this feature on this machine, many enthusiasts would love this too.
So PLEASE I would like to have an even more powerful machine!!, a machine with C2Q and perhaps OC options for it like processor OC, memory OC.
Im aware of the risks! but I would like to give it a try!.
Thank you.
(I dont really have the q9100)
I just got this answer, Im very confused about this... maybe they misunderstood...
Hi,
Please don't change CPU by yourself,it will be out of warrantee.
We suggest you take your CPU to support center and take a try.
BIOS can support up to Q9000 after update to the latest BIOS,generally,it will be a chance to support your Q9100.
The most weird thing is that the gt627,gt628,gx620,1651 with ddr2,1651 with ddr3 SHARE THE SAME BIOS!.:S:S:S:S:S:S -
Mexicansnake you can't get a correct answer when you tell them you want to install a quadcore in a 1651, because there really is a 1651 that natively supports quadcore. You have to tell them you have a gx620.

Mexicansnake, what bios are you using right now?
-
Im using the 10.z I think. @Rorschach I even explained it, they must know! I said the ddr2 one...
The thing is getting even more weird.
Look at this! there is a gt627 with core 2 quad!

Have you tried the newest bios? 1.12
http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=downloaddetail&type=bios&maincat_no=135&prod_no=1529 -
.
Urmmm maybe it SUPPORTS quads, it says gx620, it seems that they just released a new bios that supports quads!!!!

>.> doubtful unfortunately I just removed all my 1651 bios copies from my passport last night so I have no way to compare them.
-
tested a q9200 in mine last night and it does not work. with bios 1.12, if i remember right didnt the newer revision of the gx620 model also use a quad in it along with the 9600gt...i only have the q9200 and qx9300 i can test though a q9100 or q9000 may work but i cant test them.
-
I dont think it supports the Q9200 because it is not "official" perhaps the 1651 lacks of that microcode, it would be nice to see your results zfactor , Can you do the tests please?????

Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
Have you guys tried bios from other 1651 laptops, like the gt628? If that doesn't work then its definitely a hardware issue.
-
-.-' Seriously wth one of the main reasons I got rid of my 1651 was because of the lack of support for quadcore..... My guess for the q9200 not working is that its a unique cpu. Its the only mobile cpu I know of that has unlocked multipliers and is not a extreme cpu. I think several laptop makers left support for that cpu out. I would try a different one before giving up.

UPDATE GUYS!!!:
I just got a reply from the MSI forums from a guy of tech support:
If you look at the GX620 MSI page http://eu.msi.com/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1529 On the top right hand corner you will see "• Intel® Core™2 Quad processor, with Intel® wireless technology" even though all of them are sold with Core 2 Duo. So that means C2Q is supported,
These 2 CPU's are included in the AVL list for the GX620 (1651) meaning they are supported by the machine :
Penryn Core 2 Quad Q9100
Penryn Core 2 Quad Q9000
Heheheheh If only I could test it, my lappy would be a BEAST
.
-
Dude, you find some way of testing, your 3dmark score will rise
.
-
http://www.notebookjournal.de/tests/msi-gt627q-9547vhp-868/1
That model includes DDR2 ram, its the same, same everything, but just to be sure Ill try the q9000 and not the q9100. (gotta get some money first
).
I think this is official... The gx620 supports core 2 quad.

I got something for you z, and for you too darth bane!.
http://cgi.ebay.com/CPU-Heatsink-Fa...emQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item27adc6bdbb
It is the gt627 heatsink!, $30 USD + shipping.
Yep, the quad is the last upgrade for this monster, honestly the HD 4850 is like an overkill for my gaming needs as this HD 3870 behaves nicely and only consumes 55W. -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
Luckily, the default gt628 heatsink looks like that one.
Btw, the 4850 only consumes 60w, the same as the 160m gts. -

*** double post***
-
Well guys according to this page
http://www.msiwhitebook.com/
The gx620 supports core 2 quad, more specifically the q9000.
http://www.msiwhitebook.com/product/images/NBB_AVL_Intel Montivina - 2009-1119.pdf -
freind of mine tried a qx9300 as well as the q9100 today in his he said neither would boot. so the q9000 may be the only one that works then

Does anyone know of the easiest way of taking off the bottom bracket on the 160m?
-
2- Use some small pliers and do it carefully
I used my nails and hands to remove the brackets from my 9600gt. Just take your time, do it slowly. -
