6870 is not better than 5870.

    It's a underclocked revision of the 5870..

Does the GT680R feature an ExpressCard or not?
The pictures seem to suggest the ExpressCard slot was removed on the retail version, but the spec sheet still says it has 54mm slot.

Can someone comment on this discrepancy??

On the previous page Ken did confirm that his GT680R doesn't have an ExpressCard. I actually just emailed MSI to clear this up so that they can either change the Spec details or (*fingers crossed*) confirm that some actually do? I'll let you know as soon as I get a reply.

Sigh, added confusion. Below is my email to MSI, followed by the response I received. Thoughts?

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Greetings,

I have a quick question for you. I'm interested in the MSI GT680R-008US laptop, although I keep getting conflicted information about whether this model does indeed have an ExpressCard port or not. A recent owner has mentioned that it doesn't, yet some websites (including the msimobile site) continue to list in the Specs that it does. I really do hope that it does since I require one for Audio Production. Can you please confirm this for me?

    Thank you kindly,

    George K

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Hi George,

It has a Express Card 54mm card slot

Should you have any questions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Wish you a Very Happy New Year,

Ya, I replied to him with all the accumulated evidence I've encountered that shows that it doesn't have the ExpressCard port, of course without trying to sound like a d*ck lol. but mainly to get them to realize their error and correct the Spec info on their site.

Although I'm not gonna lie, there is the tiniest of tiny glimmers of hope that perhaps there might be a version with one? lol but I'm not holding my breath obviously.

*edit: If by chance he's somehow still adamant that it does, then I might take you up on that offer besweet, since you ordered it directly from them yes?

Ya I posted xoticpc's video review link in my email. I got a reply today admitting there was a typo in the Spec sheet. Then they went on about the recalls due the Sandy Bridge.

I use a UAD Solo Laptop DSP card for audio plugins. It is the only interface I can use with a mobile PC for the plugins. :(

I see! Hmm, I don't have experience in this area (pro audio); why don't you opt for one of the Asus/Sager models in that case...

Anyway looks like the SB issue is going to make it impossible to buy a new laptp till March/April so perhaps by then more models will be out, some with the port you need!

Funny you should mention that, all the new Asus and Sager models have phased out the ExpressCard port for some reason!

But you're right, by March/April I imagine more models will have been released... and hopefully ExpressCard 2.0 should be implemented in laptops this year. So...fingers crossed!

I would like to know whee can I buy one of the GT680? I could just find one at E-bay and thats all. I'm not from US (but I will be there in March), so it would be best to buy at a store or somewhere I can pay with credit card (international) and they ship to the hotel.

I've had my GT680 for over a month. I was fortunate enough to be on the MSIMobile website right as they allowed them to be purchased. Immediately ordered one. Showed up 2 days later :).

As for the GX680, probably just a rumor. I don't remember seeing it at CES either.

I'm curious to see how it performs. I can't find any benchmarks on the 6870M, so I'm assuming laptops with that GPU aren't even out yet.

Offtopic (sort of): Is there a website that sells laptop GPUs separately, since their just PCI-E cards? I've never really looked into this, because hopefully I'll be able to upgrade my GT680's GTX 460M in the future (should need be).

you need a small device that you plug in into the power outlet. this device has a built in outlet and small lcd screen. anything you plug into it will display the watts, voltage, amperage currently being used by the device you pluged into it. Its extremely useful device! i use it to view the power consumption of all my eletrical devices arounbd my house. best part is that its very affordable. about $20-$40 at the hardware store.

    here is one: Kill-a-watt - ThinkGeek :: Kill-A-Watt

Well, at least I hope this will mean that the GX660/GT663 prices will drop a bit...

GT680 is 1500€ in our country (the Netherlands). I received an e-mail it's available today from laptopshop.nl.
GX660 (with i7) is 1000€, so I got that one last week from laptopshop.nl, it's still avaible for this price on redcoon.nl.

    Nice!

I know, I also keep an eye on Tweakers Pricewatch on a weekly basis ;)

I'm still not sure if I should get the i7-740QM or i5-480M version (or even wait for a GX680), as I read a review that the i7 is pretty power consuming and therefore has a relatively short battery life (besides gaming I also want to be mobile enough when needed). But the price is definitely better than the i5 version.

I'm currently in the GX660 owner's topic to ask people about their battery life and which CPUs they have... so that might help a lot in making my choice.

I have the GT680R just got it last week in Canada, and I can tell you right now, put it on eco mode, and the thing almost lasted 4.5 hours for me, I'm loving it right now. the 460M is also really good, espeically after I overclock it, I get around 50-60fps in Crysis 2 on very high settings running at 1600x900 I believe. Mines has the i7-2630M I believe.

WOW. Makes me wish I had $400 lying around.

But how are those speeds possible? Isn't the max speeds 3Gbps (since there's no 6Gbps on the GT680), even with them in RAID?

Hey guys, got my GT680 a few weeks ago and it came with a couple dead pixels on the right side of the screen and one other problem: The left side of the keyboard isn't secured correctly I believe.

Everytime I click anything to the left of my 'F' key, it makes a very loud clacking noise. If I press hard on my caps lock key, the keyboard sounds like it snaps back into place, making the clacking disappear, but it snaps back out into it's usual position relatively quickly. Anyone know if I RMA it for the dead pixels and mention the keyboard thing(along with the fact that the Panel where the wireless button is came out of the box with quite a few scratches on it) how good are my chances of just getting a brand new machine? I'd rather not just get the screen replaced because of the terrible keyboard noise. What do you guys think?

Very new here and a little nervous.
I've researched...and researched...and reserched....looked at all the 15" gamers I could buy and have settled on the GT680.
The cons for me are ...no back-lit keyboard - well I can live with that.. maybe there is an issue there with the glossy screen?
    and the biggie....
Should I wait for the GX680?
I have Radeon graphics on 2 desktops 5770 and 4770 and love them. I had Nvidia on an old (8yrs ago) machine and frankly never loved it... I was very much a noob back then, it was just an 'I dont really feel this is a best experience feeling'.
Feedback please! Is this a serious issue or is my lack of tech knowledge just making me 'wobble'?

It seems the GX680 is going to have an Nvidia GT 555M (IIRC), not an ATI card. Strange, I know, but that's what i red somewhere.
