yeah it is: 9800m GS = underclocked 9800M GTS, GTS 160M = mildly overclocked 9700M GTS.

"Using the same GPU as the 9700M GTS" doesn't mean "Is the same GPU as the 9700M GTS".

    The info here http://www.obsessable.com/laptop/msi-gt727/specs/

It shows I'll carry a 4850 512 mb but the system memory will be ddr3 not ddr2 like the GT625 so that alone is an improvement. Though I think they put up this info when the a bit awhile ago, so who knows maybe MSI changed the specs since then, they got the time to do so since there's still no date for it's release.

GTS 160M = 9800M GTS, which is better than the 9800M GS (= slightly OCed 8800 GTS).

    http://hothardware.com/News/NVIDIA-Intros-GeForce-GTX-200M-and-GTS-100M-GPUs/

Also, I don't see DDR3 system memory as an improvement as the cost is still higher, higher latency counters the higher bandwidth (which isn't even utilized in Core 2s), and no real like difference in power consumption (despite the lower voltage). Maybe when the memory-sensitive Core i7s come out will DDR3 really take off, but then again the desktop versions have not impressed me at all due to there high power consumption with only a marginal increase in performance (and basically no performance benefit for games)...

Thats the MSI GT727, 17 inch one, it is GT725 with DDR3 RAM; where as 627/8 are both 15 inch.

What's the usual lag time between MSI announcing a laptop and the release date in the US?

It's going to be out pretty soon, April. I'm patiently waiting for it.

I would think it may fit. Does the MSI GT627 / GT725 use regular MXM III / IV cards ?? If so then there is a good possibility that a GTX 260M / 280M will fit.

almost April, anybody else got some news about this msi GT628?? All I know, they comeout mid April. But no price yet. I'm so tempted to buy the 627 already. But the fact that, if I buy the 627 and 2 weeks later 628 comes out, that will really break my heart. Jk. But yea, I know for sure the GTS 160M is alot better than 9800M GS. Considering it's the same as 9800M GTS. I guess I should wait. Crosssing fingers.

Umm the 9800M GTS isn't a lot better than the 9800M GS. The 9800M GS is an underclocked 9800M GTS lol :p There's maybe a 10-15% difference between the two seeing as shaders and the rest stays the same.

The main advantage is that the die is smaller I believe so it'll run cooler and possibly overclock more if that's your fancy, but performance shouldn't suffer a drastic increase in the GPU department really.

Thanks for the input guys, I appreciate it. YeA I already know that the gs is underclocked GTS. My bro have 9800M GTS on his sager np8660. It does make a slight difference. Let me put it this way on playing crysis, on my 9800gs I can go mainstream with some gamer, on his 9800m gts, he can go all gamer with enthusiast shaders, physics, particles and shadows. Basically high to super high. Same CPU p8700 2.53, same everthing, just different brand.

There is more than just physical dimensions of the GPU itself, heck you can physically put a desktop GPU in a laptop. The thing that makes these cards unusable in a smaller chassis is ability to remove heat. More transistors means more power consumption which means more heat (wasted energy). The GTX 260/280M double the shaders of the GTS 160M running at similar speeds means a lot more heat produced. Comparing the power consumption, 48W and 75W... that's a huge difference.
