    Msi A5000/A6000 Series Overclocking Guide

    Svet's modified A5000 BIOS has unlocked all important performance options including memory clock speed, CPU FSB, GPU Memory Share Size from 32MB-512MB(Called Svet's FB), and it also reverses the function of the Fn and Ctrl keys making it much easier for faster typing if you are used to Ctrl key being on the lower right of keyboard. This BIOS should also work on A6000 series since they use the exact same mainboard. The only drawback is it will show MSI A5000 as model at startup rather then A6000. The overclocked FSB values I posted below are the average for the Intel Celeron T3000 CPU that comes stock in the A5000-025US and not the Intel Core2Duo T6600. The T6600 in A6000 might not be able to run that high of FSB so I would recommend you to start the FSB at 1000FSB on the T6600 and work up from there. I have found this BIOS to be extremely stable when overclocked and would highly recommend everyone who wants even one of these changes to flash to it. I am listing the exact steps below on how to upgrade to this BIOS and overclock safely with it.
    1.) Download Svet's Modified A5000 BIOS from http://www.mediafire.com/?czm4fjm3ytj .
    2.) Download the official MSIHQ USB Flash Tool 1.18t installer in rar form from http://www.mediafire.com/file/0oy5mzmiijq/MSIHQ Tool 1.18t Installer.rar .
    3.) Extract rar file and run the installer to install. Plug your USB flash drive in and make sure there is no data you need on it because it will be destroyed. Also make sure you have your AC adapter plugged in at all times during the BIOS flashing process or it won't run. Run the USB Flash Tool and clock OK on the first prompt that shows your BIOS and hardware info. Choose the "Fix my USB Key" option and follow the prompts to let the tool prepare your USB drive. Type the letter of you USB drive and then enter and let the tool do it's thing. After the tool is done restart the tool and choose the "Point to MSI BIOS archive" and choose RAR file type on the dropdown and browse to the A5000vBKM.rar file. At the DOS prompt enter your USB drive letter and hit enter and let the tool copy all the BIOS flash tools and files until it says it has completed.
    4.) Reboot notebook and at POST tap F11 key and boot from your USB flash drive. Follow all the prompts until it says that the BIOS has been successfully flashed. Turn off notebook at this time. Take out the battery and unplug notebook for at least 10 secs or so. Reinstall battery and plug in AC adapter and power up notebook. On the first power on it should give you a CMOS checksum error. Press F1 to enter BIOS setup and then "Load Setup Defaults" in BIOS and hit F10 to save and exit.
    5.) Enter BIOS setup again by pressing DEL key, change SYSTEM CLOCK MODE to UNLINKED, change FSB to 1200Mhz, and change the MEMORY CLOCK to 900Mhz. Set MEMORY TIMINGS to MANUAL and use the following timings:

    tCL - 6
    tRAS - 18
    tRCD - 6
    tRP - 6
    tRC - 24

    6.) You can also change your VGA Memory Share Size by going to "Svets FB Size" option and choose between 32MB-512MB. I would recommend at least 256MB or 512MB for MAX performance. Hit F10 to save and exit.
    7.) See if notebook will POST @ 1200FSB, boot into Windows and run WEI and see if it completes. If it completes reboot and adjust FSB up by 12Mhz(27Mhz CPU Speed) increments, then save and repeat booting Windows and running WEI until it completes. Once you have reached a FSB that won't boot Windows or complete WEI back the FSB down by 4Mhz(9Mhz CPU Speed) and try again. If your lucky your MAX FSB should be around 1200Mhz(2.7Ghz CPU Speed) or as high as 1288Mhz(2.9Ghz) giving you 50-60% OC! If your notebook doesn't POST @ 1200FSB then you will need to remove backplate and then CMOS Battery, and then the notebook battery. Wait a few seconds and then install CMOS Battery and notebook battery and power notebook back on and it will have cleared CMOS, loaded system defaults, and it will show a CMOS Checksum Error. Lower FSB down by 12Mhz(27Mhz Speed) until notebook will POST and then make sure it will boot Windows and run a full WEI test.
    8.) Once you have found your MAX stable FSB you can now overclock your MEMORY CLOCK over 900Mhz and possibly as high as 920-930Mhz. If your notebook doesn't post at 900Mhz MEMORY CLOCK then lower it down 10Mhz until you find max MEMORY CLOCK. I just found out that since the GPU allocates your system memory, the GPU MEMORY CLOCK is rated at whatever your current system MEMORY CLOCK speed is. This means that your GPU memory clock and bandwidth will benefit from you overclocking your MEMORY CLOCK speed in BIOS. Unfortunately GPU core clock is locked via chipset which makes Nvidia System Tools worthless now that BIOS OC is working flawless. You will need to test your RAM's stability while overclocked by using MEMTEST86+ V4.0. You can download MEMTEST86+ V4.0 from http://www.memtest.org/download/4.00/memtest86+-4.00.iso.zip . Unzip the zip and burn ISO to CD-R using Windows Disc Image Burner or Imgburn. Adjust your MEMORY CLOCK up while watching the TARGET MEMORY SPEED. You will notice that as you raise the MEMORY CLOCK the TARGET MEMORY SPEED only matches your MEMORY CLOCK SPEED every 7-20Mhz increment. Next boot from the Memtest CD by typing F11 and choosing DVD Drive and type the letter C then 1 then 3 then 5 then 0 to run Test#5 which is quick and pretty accurate on RAM stabilility. If it passes 1 pass then press ESC to reboot, re-enter BIOS and increase MEMORY CLOCK up to the next increment where MEMORY CLOCK and MEMORY TARGET SPEED match and save to BIOS and boot Memtest and repeat this process until Memtest shows red errors,artifacts,reboots, or freezes. Once it shows red errors or artifacts back the MEMORY CLOCK down to the last increment where MEMORY CLOCK and TARGET MEMORY SPEED matched and it previously passed Memtest. This will be your MAX stable MEMORY CLOCK as long as Windows boots and Prime95 will run for at least an hour. If Prime95 errors out you will need to lower your MEMORY CLOCK back down to the last stable increment and retry Prime95 until it passes for at least an hour. You should find your MAX MEMORY CLOCK to be around 880Mhz to 930Mhz.
    9.) After you have found your MAX stable FSB and MEMORY CLOCK SPEED I would recommend running Prime95 Torture Test for at least an hour or so. You can download Prime95 from http://majorgeeks.com/downloadget.php?id=4363&file=1&evp=ffc2a25c3011b055346f699a0c02444e . Just extract the zip file and run it. Once it is open click on "Just Stress Testing" button and then run "In-place Large FFTs" by clicking the dot by it and hitting OK. If it runs for an hour or longer with no errors your system should be stable. If Prime95 errors out or system freezes or reboots then lower your FSB 12Mhz(27Mhz CPU Speed) and try again. You might even need to lower your MEMORY CLOCK to the last increment to get Prime95 stable.

    If all goes well notebook should post and now show the overclocked CPU speed in Computer Properties in Win7! Remember if your notebook doesn't post you will have to remove the backplate and then remove CMOS battery and notebook battery and wait for a minute or so to clear CMOS back to default. I hope this guide helps some of you newbies get the max out of this little gem. Please post you maximum stable overclock using this method as well as the highest RAM speed you were able to get your stock CAS 6 Samsung sticks to run at. Also post your highest 3DMark03 score in Win7 64bit. Mine is 3235 using Nvidia 195.62 64bit WHQL with my modified inf. I have attached a screenshot showing my straight rock solid 50% straight BIOS OC on my 1.8Ghz Celeron giving me 2.7Ghz(1200FSB 900MEM) making my $320 A5000-025US perform like a $1000+ notebook! My Win7 64Bit WEI scores at 2.7Ghz are CPU- 6.2,MEMORY-5.9,GRAPHICS-4.2,GAMING GRAPHICS-5.1HDD-5.9(WD 7200RPM BLACK). My max stable overclock via Nvidia System Tools was around 2.538Ghz(1128FSB 834MEM). Now that I have figured out how the BIOS works and how it auto divides the memory on the fly effectively I would say don't install Nvidia System Tools. It seems to have a glitchy memory dividing process and it doesn't seem to overclock as well as BIOS OC or uninstall properly. I have had to fresh install twice due to Nvidia System Tools not uninstalling. I would like to thank everyone who has tested the OC settings I have posted and have given their feedback on what worked and what didn't. Without the feedback I wouldn't have a very accurate OCing guide for users using the stock Samsung sticks.

    Thanks so much! I knew something was wrong when I installed nTune and my system completely bricked when I pressed 'accept'. Now I have a system complete with functional Ctrl key.

    As for overclock, here's what I got:

    FSB 1272 (reported 1267) = CPU 2850 (+58%)
    Mem 929

    This is crazy for a $400 laptop.

    Hi,
    thank you for this detailed tutorial. I have a question. I own an A5000 and applied your steps but strangely I cannot change memory and FSB speeds. I can change graphics framebuffer size and can set the system clock mode to unlinked but memory and FSB remain at 800Mhz, pressing return does nothing. What can I do?

    hi. I am a a6005 user (ms-1682). I`ve tryed this method above step by step. Used MSIHQ USB Flash Tool, everything was correctly made ("Your bios was correcty ...do you want to reboot now"). Nothing Changed I have the same bios as before (A1682SMS v1.0M). I`ve tryed another method but the flash utility from Msi (afudos) prompts an error - incorrect bios ver by A1683BKM....or something like that.

    One thing works- Ati GPu clock tool. U can easly overclock Gpu and memory 100Mhz up. The Gpu z utility shows Temperature 64, 66 C.

    Bios change was a great fix for the CTRL / FN key switch. Only problem, hibernate does not work anymore. Tried the usual fixes (powercfg -h off, then on, all under admin mode, make sure all devices power management settings prevent device from waking, etc. etc.), but when you try to hibernate, it just brings you right back to the sign in screen. Worked perfect before bios. Is this a flaw in the bios or is there a setting I am missing. :confused:

    Hello all,
    (Long time no see Hurtz777)

    With the modded, (Or later OEM bios) has anyone gotten their A5000 /A6000 to wake up from SLEEP mode via a USB Mouse, keyboard ,etc????

    About two weeks ago purchased a WMC HP remote/IR receiver... for
    A: WAF =Wife Approval factor
    B: The ability to put the PC to SLEEP and WAKE it from SLEEP via a remote.

    Pressing SLEEP on the remote (or clicking SLEEP) on shutdown menu puts the computer to sleep just fine... (so far no problem...)

    Problem is :

    A5000 will NOT wake from S3 sleep mode via USB Mouse, keyboard, (MS spec'd, HP branded) ehome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR).

    (I've played with power settings, etc without success leading me to the conclusion the BIOS and or the Embedded Controller (EC) aren't listing to the USB PORTS while in sleep mode.)

    Putting A5000-025US to sleep via WMC remote (Or via clicking sleep on shutdown menu tab) Puts computer to sleep FINE.
    (Blue led on Power button, and blue status led on front of unit flashing.)

    Problem is once in sleep mode the ONLY way to "wake" the unit is to physically press the POWER button.

    (This is a issue if you don't have ready access to physically press the POWER button.)

    I'd really appreciate if my fellow A5000 /A6000 owners could see if their units can be wakened from S3 SLEEP mode from a USB device.

    Wife is NOT happy that the WindowsMediaCenter remote will not "wake up" the A5000 as it should. :mad:

    From a command prompt running:

    "powercfg -a" shows the A5000 can do S3 Hybrid sleep mode

    With the stock bios when I select SLEEP, and or hit the SLEEP button on a HP WMC remote- it being paired with a ehome infrared receiver (USBCIR) the computer goes to SLEEP fine but will NOT wake up via a attached USB device.

    (USB Mouse, keyboard, ehome IR receiver)

    Running:
    "powercfg devicequery wake_armed" unlike other PC's I have that show multiple USB devices (USB mouse/keyboard-ehome receiver)... On the A5000 it ONLY lists the ehome infrared receiver as a device that can wake the unit indicating something in the BIOS is amiss.


    NOTE: On the stock BIOS there are no tabs for power management, ACPI, S3 mode... Stock bios is locked down to the level of a 5-year old would be able to understand.

    I'm sure other A5000, A6000 CR500, CR600 MSI owners- have gotten notification of new posts...

    I'd really appreciate if my fellow A5000 /A6000 /A5xxxx, A6xxxx , CR500, CR600 AKA MSI-1683 , AKA MSI-168x owners could see if their units can be wakened from S3 SLEEP mode from a USB device.

    Once in sleep mode the ONLY way to "wake" MSI A5000-25US is to physically press the POWER button. MCE remote- and IIRC attached USB devices will not bring unit out of S3 sleep mode.

    *From my research on the net- some manufacturers kill power to usb ports when computer goes into sleep mode to conserve battery power... While this make sense while on battery- Why on A/C disable the ports?

    *I think on the MSI the port is getting power- with the BIOS being the brain-dead responsible party here.
