Don't know if this is appropriate on this particular forum, but since this is where I hang out, I'll share it with you all (if you don't know this already).

First, ask yourself: "Do I want this?" ---> Here's a screenshot of my desktop
http://imageshack.us/a/img708/7228/bssl.png Without installing 3rd party app.

If the answer is YES, read on. If not, this is a good place to stop.

Many of you (including me) dislike the Metro very much. But Win 8 support is growing, and it's a necessary Evil. First and foremost, people miss the Win7 start menu. The down side of this is that Metro already takes up a lot of room (memory) / overhead. And in my opinion, it is very poorly designed. For non-tablet users, it's an actual punishment IMO... On top of this, you're adding additional applications that places a start menu function on top of Metro UI (Double Whammy)

Windows 8 has great performance / functional improvements over Windows 7. So if there is a way to keep all of the benefits of Win 8, but "Truly" bring back the Win7 usability, wouldn't that be just great? :notworthy:

There are many "Start Menu" programs out there, and most popular one is called Classic Shell. I've used this for a while now, and until few days ago, when I discovered that someone who goes by the handle of "Tihiy" at My Digital Life forums created a real shell wrapper that basically replaces the "Windows Explorer" functions from Windows 7 and wraps it directly onto Windows 8 itself. To install this, you will need to have a Windows 7 disk or ISO image handy.

You can get the files here Windows 7 explorer for Windows 8 you can also thank the guy / gal who wrote this, donate, or whatever suits your fancy. This person deserves a Nobel Prize for this :D

    Basically what you do is

    1. Either insert a Win 7 DVD, or mount the iso.
    2. Download the file ---> http://tihiy.net/files/ex7forW8_1.0.zip (extract and launch ex7forw8_setup.exe)

When you download this, your browser may see it as a potential malware. But it isn't. It's false positive. I've tested it, and ran thru AV.

    3. Following the setup instruction is fairly simple. When asked, just point to the DVD image drive \ sources directory. So if you've inserted a dvd, or mounted the ISO, point to X:\sources\

    4. Go to the metro UI, and find a newly installed app called: " Switch Shells "
If you already have a start menu like app installed, it may be safe to uninstall it first. I've installed it on a clean environment, so I"m not sure what it will do

As soon as you run Switch Shells, and choose Win7 start menu, it will reboot. When you come back, you'll notice that Metro UI is COMPLETELY bypassed and disabled. This isn't some 'masking' disablement. It' a real disabling function.

The benefit: Metro UI bypass routine doesn't do anything by just hides it. But in this case, it doesn't even get loaded. There by saving lots of memory, and the system is much 'snappier' And no third party start menu apps to boot!

I've tested this for the last 3 days, everything is perfect. I have not found any issues what so ever. It even plays the win7 start up sound :D

Once you do this, and whenever you install a new app, say.., Chrome browser. It no longer nags you as to which browser will be 'default'. Basically, you get your Win 7 back!!

If you don't like this, and for 'god know what' you want the Metro back, simply launch "Switch Shell" again, and choose Metro.

Be sure to visit Windows 7 explorer for Windows 8 and thank the person.

And for those (likely MANY) who didn't know this, I want 1000 thanks and 1000 rep points with 24 hours. OK? :D Alrighty then!

    Peace out!

Thank you for this write up. I may try it, I spend almost no time at the metro screen, so it seems kind of pointless. Windows 8.1 is supposed to fix this though, right?

Thanks, thats a nifty program. Only issue is it ignores windows 8's startup list, and just launches everything.

This would be better suited in the Windows Forum, but really - it's a great guide.
