I just joined yesterday, hell, I just ordered the laptop off ebay less than 24 hours ago. I had a quick couple questions.

    1. Can it boot off the SD slot? I have a 16gb SDHC going to waste, and if it can boot off SD, I can toss Ubuntu on it and leave the harddrive for Vista/Win7.

    2. The internal PCI-e; is it possible to put a SSD in there and boot off of it? This might be another alternative to the SDHC.

Bumping this for hopes in an answer to #2. It could determine whether I go with a 1722 or a 1651

Doesn't an SDHC need a dedicated HC style slot? It doesn't seem likely that this would be standard on all but the newest model laptops.

Barring that you could use a usb sdhc reader and boot from that, or even a pci-e style sdhc adapter.

My year old T61p and my wife's 2 year old DV9500 both support SDHC. My E1705 from back in 06 did SDHC as well.

I would be very unpleasantly surprised to find out a P45 based system can't do SDHC.

    Much appreciated!

I figure #1 will be easier to find the answer to than #2.

I don't know about the media slot, but I've connected a media card reader via usb and booted from that. I ported my vista install disk to a microSD and booted off that to install my OS. As far as the SSD issue, that might be alil harder to find out. One idea is to call one of the resellers, such as rkcomputer.net, and ask them. I remember on one of the forums a representative from that company was on the forum and was very helpful and informative.

How are you guys getting it to boot?

I put in a 2gb SD card, and the boot order had nothing to allow it to boot to a USB hdd.

I use a Lexar 16gb in the PcExpressCard to boot into DOS mode for bios flash. But an odd feature of the MSI-1651 is that in the Bios Boot Sequence, engaging the SSD swaps the existing HD off the boot sequence list, instead of appending the SSD to the list...
