I bought an MSI-1651 from Xotic in August. Last night I was gaming, everything was perfect. I put it in sleep mode, and woke up, and today the sleep LED (which normally flashes while sleeping) is off, and the power button doesn't work.

Ive tried taking out the battery and putting it back in, unplugging the laptop and plugging it back in...nothing. When the power button has no effect, there is very little I can do.

    Any ideas?

First off - Power switches only work when there's enough voltage applied to one side of the switch to begin with. If there's not enough voltage, you can push it until he_ll freezes over and nothing will happen.

If you've never calibrated your battery to your power monitor, you can get a false battery level reading. If your battery is completely drained, you need to give it time to build up a charge while plugged in, and that won't happen in the time it takes to plug it in and try the switch. Even if you had it plugged in, you know as most people with notebooks do that the AC plug sometimes pull out a bit or all the way, automatically shifting from AC power to the battery, and then completely draining it without knowing. Then you wake up an bang your head against the wall wondering why your system won't start. Hmm...

Put your battery back in, plug in the power adapter, and let it sit and charge for an hour. That should be enough of a charge to at least cycle the power switch and start it. If after that you still can't get a power LED or the switch won't turn it on, it's a good possibility your battery is kaputnik. First thing's first though - check the obvious with the power input to see if your battery will charge at all. Make sure your adapter plug is connected all the way also if it's an adapter with 2 cords and a transformer.

IF that works, PM me and I'll tell you how to cal your battery.

Thanks! I'll give it a try, but I have to say...the laptop has been plugged in since last night when I was gaming. It wouldn't have been able to play those games properly if it wasn't plugged in properly. It is possible that it god unplugged part way through and that's why this is happening...but I doubt it. In any case, its properly plugged in now, and I'll try it again in a few hrs. Wish me luck...

How long did you leave the battery and a/c out? Make sure you leave both out for at least 1 hour, this will reset all to default and the notebook should boot.

Even if it doesn't work, you still need to eliminate the possibilities.

I left it on AC for several hours and tried the power again. The LEDs lit up for about a second, and the fans turned on momentarily, but then it shut down again and now it doesn't respond again. This does seem to be consistent with a completely dead battery. I can't believe this happened. If I take out the battery, and try to start it just on AC, it doesn't work. Is there some way to make it run on AC without the battery so that I can be sure that the battery is the problem? Thanks guys.

In the mean time I'm going to try NoClue's suggestion. Can I ask...what exactly will be reset to default? Thanks.

It is possible you could have a failed a/c, if you can find another similar try that and see if it starts. I have seen the same symptoms if a notebook is left plugged in and it gets hit with a line surge it will not boot, removing the battery and a/c will reset all to factory defaults.

Thanks. Both are unplugged now, we'll see what happened. The fact that it starts to boot for about a second after a long time with AC plugged in leads me to believe that it is a battery issue.

Do you know if it is possible to make the notebook run on AC without the battery?

Yes if the a/c adapter is functional the notebook will run without the battery installed.

My Stupidity. The power cable is two piece, and my little brother thought it would be funny to disconnect it and see how long it took me to figure it out, since that power cable hasn't moved from behind my desk in about a week.

I'm seriously thinking of putting his computer in the fish tank.
