Hi, I have serious overheating problems on my 1029, it turns itself off when it gets too hot, which happens every time i play a game. It used to be only on more graphically demanding games, but recently it has began to happen on every game i play, even the very old ones. I have removed the back plate to try and help it cool, which helps a little, but it will still turn itself off when it overheats.
The laptop got so hot once it buckled the plastic cooling stand that i bought for it to try and cool it a bit, which i guess is not a good sign...
So my questions are: Is it possible that when moving it round the heatsink has become dislodged, causing the processor to overheat? Would it be worth trying to take it off and put it back on? An would getting some more thermal paste work aswell?
How can i underclock the processor to try and reduce the heat generated? i had a look in BIOS, but it doesn't seem possible to change it... would a BIOS update help?
Is it possible to view the CPU temp on a MSI-1029?
sending it back to get it repaired is not really an option, as i am at university and need it for work
thanks

The thermal paste will not fill the air gap between the GPU and heatsink. There also may be thermal pads on other components that are cooled but i don't have one of these open so cannot be sure. Also is the fan operating?
The thermal pads being replaced or not installed properly is the most common problem with overheating on this model. -
Well, i think i got it... After reading what you said, i decided to remove the fan, only to find the grill completely clogged with dust. Which would explain how it has slowly deteriorated over time... more dust, more heat. I gave it a good clean out, played a game, and it didn't get overly hot!
Thanks for the help! -

it depends on where you live...but you should be cleaning your notebook fans at least once a month with a can of compressed air.

I haven't gotten any compressed air yet... BUT I undervolted my CPU with RMClock a couple nights ago and have had NO overheating problems at all. Idle operating temp dropped from 52 to 47 degrees Celsius, and fully loaded temp dropped from 90-something, or whatever it reached before overheating, to a max of 68. Can't wait to clean out the fan/grill and put my laptop on the notebook cooler back at the apartment, I wonder how cool it will run then.
Btw, my undervolts with the MT-34:
4.0x - 0.800V
8.0x - 0.950V
9.0x - 1.000V
