I'm going to need to buy a laptop soon since I will be loosing the use of my work laptop due to a lay-off. Originally I was looking to buy a Sager like the 5796. But dues to financial reason I want to keep the price down to the lows 2K. I'm also interested in the Sager 5793 but both these Sager's are notorious for high fan noises.

I would prefer a 17" notebook. On the MSI side I've been looking at the 1722. I mainly game on my Xbox. But I still want a laptop with a good card in case I start to game on the laptop. I'm also interested in the HP HDX 18t, and I know the cards on the MSI is a little more powerful. But to be honest I'm not too familiar with MSI and their reliability worries me a bit. I don't have that issue the Sager or Asus.

Also anyone know of any MSI 1722 reviews???
    Thanks.

37 views and no replies. No one here on the MSI forum can tell me whether MSI's are just as reliable as Sager's and Asus's???

Maybe your silence is the answer to my question.
I know on the Sager forum I would of received many replies by now defending the Sager name.

MSI has not been manufacturing laptops as long as Sager, and not many people have it. Very, very few people have reported back their experience with it over the years, so information on long term reliability is very limited. I don't think there is anyone that has the particular laptop you're looking at (MSI 1722 a.k.a. GX720). Go get a Sager and enjoy it.

MSI is ranked #3 among many manufacturers in Taiwan.
They are the direct manufacturer (1st-tier) of their products.
Sager is just a marketing company selling Clevo, and Clevo is not a direct manufacturer (is 2nd-tier) of their products.

Thanks for replies guys. I thought they've been around a lot longer.
I need something that's going to be reliable. Don't want to buy a Del. I do like HP's. Will have to keep researching. I might be out of a job very soon. Could be today or next week.
    Thanks.

I really like the HPs but their specs just werent upto scratch (using ddr2 memory for gfx card etc) and i found their screens really dull. Its worth looking at Toshiba too, i would say they are definately on a par with HP.

I'm pretty much in the same position as gugarci. A friend of mine owns a computer tech company and said that MSI has a good reputation. I haven't read anything negative about them on the web either.

I'm on a tight budget and the new GX630 is very very appealing. The 512mb ddr3 gpu on a $800 laptop is certainly the selling point for me. Does anyone have any more information on this company's reliability or customer service?

I have a MS-1722 whitebook and I am pleased with the quality and performance. I replaced an Asus Z84J whitebook with this MSI. The MSI is thinner, lighter and the build quality is equal to if not a little better than the Asus.

Asus and MSI are both ODM's (they make their own notebooks). Dell, HP, Gateway and the like are OEM's (they buy their notebooks from ODM's). If you want to see a list of OEM's and who makes their notebooks; (search) TuxMobil, click the Misc link, then the Laptop Manufacturers OEM Relations link.

If you are wanting to build your own (whitebook), I would have to recommend Asus, Compal or the OCZ DIY over MSI. OCZ has a new 17" notebook that is available now through the SI's (System Intigrators) and should be available directly to the end user as a whitebook around the first of the year.

I found out after the fact that MSI will not allow an end user to register the warranty of a whitebook, it has to be registered through an SI. This makes no sense, MSI allows resellers to sell their whitebooks. If you buy one as an end user, you can't register it. I would have to question the legalty of this and I'm a little upset about it.

If you are going to purchase a MSI through an SI, the warranty is not an issue and it is a very good product. There are many SI's and I am not going to recommend a particular one over the other, but several POST on this forum and appear to be more involved than others.

RK Computers and XOTIC PC if you are in the US are two of the SI's that POST here and each have multiple ODM products. If you are in Europe, BTO Notebooks.
