I like the M655 since I was already looking at the 1029 but I'm wondering about how long it will be before we see it in the US and how long it will be before resellers allow us to configure them.

I'm thinking the M655 might make me change my mind about getting the 1036 right now. :)

I guess it depends on when these are coming out, since I was hoping to have my new notebook come spring break.

My only complaint with the M655 is the resolution. 1280x800 just isn't enough for me. 1680x1050 should be just right, the reason I was looking at the 1035/36.

S280 mentioned in the first post is actually a 12" 1,4kg ultraportable model.

It is mentioned as a model to be presented at CEBIT this week. More details are not known yet.

Unfortunately, new Intel Duo S262 can't be made so cool running by undervolting as it was the case with S260, because Intel has explicitly set the minimum voltage at the lower step to 0.950V for Yonahs.

Besides, S260 are almost silent because of the special firmware developed by MSU on request of and in cooperation with the (German?) customers. It is clear if the same firmware will be available for S260.

So, those who don't know for sure why they need Intel Duo's extra performace have got something to think about. :p

Wait. Core duo runs hotter than sonoma? I thought it was the other way around: duo was inherrently more efficient and therefore cooler.

on the German fan speed thing. You might be on to something. I have a fujitsu s7020d and the German forums are always *****ing about how loud the fan is. Whereas I care less about the fan and wish it would run cooler.

I never found the S260/1012 to run hot or loudly at stock speeds and voltage. As always, some are more sensitive than others.

So I'm all for a Core Duo 12" with the normal fan sound. My 1013 isn't loud either, the fan kicks in once in a while but is hardly that noticeable.

Anyone actually seen the S262 on the CeBIT website cited, this thread, before? Their "SPEC" section really downplayed them and I'm really glad to see this ~2 month -old launch piece: http://www.laptoplogic.com/news/detail.php?id=362
Goren, I think mentioned the MSI line in a comment and I did read the 1022 model's review has gained a higher regard with me, certainly since the ASUS transition of build-philosophy; that's business and that's its product. So, I hope this new 2006 launch of S262 is one that works!

I'm really interested...read the article, look at the pic and if you don't need a Z70Va packed into a 12 wide, but want a business/non-biz "portable schlep-it" machine...that's what I want...with DL DVD RW...and all that other jazz expected in what I'm assuming will be a priced right machine...this might be it!

If it's priced too high??? I'll just go for a ASUS Z33Ae and probably do the same things I would have done with this one, "spec'd-out-beautiful-in-pic-and-in-prose" machine...if you get that drift.

I say that Core Duo may run hotter than undervolted Sonoma, and Intel has explicitly blocked the possibility to undervolt Core Duo at the lowest step. Moreover, Yonah takes a couple of Watts more at the full load (if I interpret the specifications correctly) but we probably can correct that by undervolting. :)

It is just an issue to be taken into account, not to tell that Core Duo is bad or like.

S262 is already offered on some German internet shops with the specifications, though it is explicitly written that it is not available yet.

personally I don't think the PM chip itself is what's causing my hand to sweat on my sonoma machine. I think its more the chipset. Undervolting does nothing to help the heat on my fujitsu (its kept at .7v at all times).

Is it ULV processor or it is set so by Fijitsu? Cool! It is the minimum you can have with undervolting!
Usually it is 0.9xxV on the lowest step of normal PMs, and I thought so far that it is only undervolting which allows to reduce it to 0.700V.

no its a normal 1.73 PM. I'm using NHC to lower it to .7, but it really doesn't do much for heat. The left palmrest and underneath that area gets very warm. My hand literally sweats if I use it a lot. I do get pretty good battery life though :) The heat is primary reason I want a replacement. A core duo MS-1022 update or the asus z35f are my top choices.

OK, I see it now, and it makes sense. If other components of new notebooks are also made on 65nm technology, then they may be cooler. I think it is more a matter of the specific notebook design. For example, I have very good opinion about the heat management of BenQ notebooks (at least those produced after 2004). MSI S260 was also good, according to the German users' forums, so I have develpped some confidence in MSI brand to believe that the new S262 will be OK.

I personally think the Sonoma Southbridge is hotter than the original Centrino architecture. The dothan processor isn't to blame. It was used the interchangeably with Banias processors on the original centrino (montara) 855 chipset... if that makes any sense.

    Hi.

Im from Asia and I just got myself an MSI Megabook S420 (The Orange cover 14.1 inch C2D Model). Not sure what's it called in the States.

Anyhow here's the pros and cons of the notebook

    Pro

    1. Fast
    2. Heat is minimal

    Cons

    1. There's a small depression on the upper left corner of the lcd screen (I hope you guys over there don't have the same problem). I've had my notebook compared with 3 other similar models and they all have that small (if not minimal) depression in that area. But of course, if you're not a perfectionist, it's liveable.

    2. The USB ports are in the wrong area. It should be left at the rear or the side rear. Having to plug in a USB mouse, I've had my palm tripped over it a couple of times.

    3. When you do your work at night, the neon blue Power light can be annoying and blinding! Had to cover with small piece of paper!

    4. Trackpoint too small. 30% of it is covered by the vertical scrolling point. Best to use USB mouse.

    5. There does not seem to be any available Catalyst upgrade for the Radeon Xpress 200m card. It's like ATI does not acknowledge its existence! Well then again, if it's not broken don't fix it. (I don't plan to use it as a gaming machine).

    6. The RALINK Wireless Mini PCI card is WEAK! My notebook has a hard time detecting the Linksys wireless router on the 2nd floor. (In my room it's between low and very low). I was fortunate enough to have a spare Intel calexico wireless mini pci card which I swapped with the Ralink card. (There's none of the proprietary lock on mini pci cards like what they did with IBM and HP, so no worries) And then presto! My link was between v.good and excellent! Of course I had to sacrifice the bluetooth function which wasnt available on the intel card, but hey, I could always use a bluetooth dongle!

Don't let the drawbacks get to you. I wouldn't swap the notebook for anything else! Overall, I'm satisfied with the system. I'd give it a 7.5 out of 10.
