Prime95 is passing, I'll give vantage a shot.

Or another game, the more intense, the better.
And yay, my Samsung HDD just arrived. Now just waiting for the SSD tomorrow. -
I also forgot to mention, the computer accidentally went on standby while sc2 was installing.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
By itself? Or did you hit a button by accident?
-
I accidentally closed the lid. Just ran Vantage and it does the same thing. I don't understand this, the GPU temperature is very low. You would think Xoticpc would run a game or something on it to test the video card before they ship out...

Sorry to hear that Equilibrium - but not to question the issues you're facing, isn't SC2, being that it's an RTS game heavier on the CPU demands rather than the GPU? Could there be an issue in diagnosing which hardware is causing the issue?
I agree with above - if you have like a First Person Shooter game, or something GPU-heavy, try that and check the thermals, Vantage, or program of your choosing. See if it lasts longer/shorter, and then diagnose the CPU.
Xotic is pretty good though. I've dealt with the Justins before. My last Asus
(which has ground to a halt, and hence a re-appearance from me here, as it would cost as much as a new system to fix the motherboard - as well as dealing with the 'infamous' customer service they have)
Came with a Seagate HDD that they had tested, run the system on briefly, and then when I got it, it wasn't DOA, but failed within the first 12 hours of the system. They were great about an exchange.
Also they might have some great ideas for proper testing and isolating the unit that's giving you grief. Send 'em a message. They're good troubleshooters. -
It could be a driver issue? What exactly happens with the crash? Is it like the other user that had black screens of death?
And unless you specify Xoticpc to run the machine before sending it, I doubt they would touch it. -
What basically happens is the screen goes grey and has lines going vertically. I'll see if I can get a picture. This crash only happens in games and programs using the GPU. I have tested using prime95 and it has been passing the test.
I noticed in the bios the system is still set on raid even though Xoticpc put a 80gig ssd hard drive inside. -
what do you guys think about getting an 80gb intel g2 vs a 120gb crucial c300? I don't really need the extra space because all my games and other media will be on the 500gb 7200 rpm hdd, but is there a noticeable difference between the two?

Look in Event Viewer and see what errors you can see that might correspond to the problem. One time I was getting a 1101, "Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0".
I later determined it to be a fault with either the GPU or CPU. -
Where is event viewer? LOL they didn't even install the card reader driver.
Here is what happens to the computer when it crashes:
-

In the Win7 search bar, just search for it. Once you find it and open it, look for the menu bar on the left. Expand custom views, and then look for Administrative Events.
Tomorrow I'm installing my 240GB OCZ Vertex LE SSD and Samsung Spinpoint MP4 HDD. I will also commence my cooling mods. BE AFRAID. BE VERY AFRAID. -
I'm getting that transport 0 error as well.
-
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
Looks suspiciously like a hardware fault. My screen would freeze up on a random color and I would get the audit errors. I swapped out my GPU and CPU and my computer has been running clean ever since. Contact your reseller to crosscheck, though.
Interesting discovery: I have four 8-packs of copper blocks sitting in my drawer. Hee hee. -

I was storing them with the future in mind
"Hmm... I have to wait for like three weeks for these to come from China... Let me order some in advance!" So I've had those for like... six or seven months. Haha.
In other news, I had an S(triped)SOD after playing Killing Floor semi-maxed for like two hours. 840/1050 clocks, max GPU temperature was definitely below 80C (since I was monitoring it with MSI Afterburner).
I viewed event log, and the only error I have was from hard-resetting my laptop. Weird, huh. Writing it off as a weird driver issue.
EDIT: Noticed I had several "registry leaks" from my OS partition. That might be it too. Not familiar with what a registry leak is, though. -
@ equilibrium
Definitely sounds like a ATI issue (whether it is the GPU itself or the drivers I do not know). The same thing happened on my Second Envy 17 with the 5850 in it. I would just return it and ask for a new one. -

I just got my gx660 today and I must say I'm impressed, great sound quality and speed, haven't tried any games yet.
But can't seem to turn on the webcam... when I run webcam companion it says it couldn't find a webcam, and pressing fn+f6 doesn't work either... help anyone? -
I tried the sensitivity, but I will continue to mess with it. -
it took me a couple of days to get used to it. -
On the touchpad, double check that the slider areas are not active. That can greatly reduce the usable area.

So I've gotten my new hard drive set up (OCZ Vertex 240GB and Samsung MP4 640GB @ 7200rpm) plus driller the unholy crap out of my back panel. Let's see what happens next.

I wanted a better space/performance ratio. The Samsun is mostly going to hold media and lightweight games, so the sheer speed of a WD Black or a Momentus XT would be wasted on it. that being said, I didn't want a 5400rpm HDD, so I compromised.
I'm going to need to experiment with what slot to put the Samsung in. It's idling at damn near 36C with no extra cooling. -
Sorry I just received my laptop today and was wondering how to turn raid 0 off?
Also how would you remove the bottom of the laptop?
I want to see what is inside.
I'm not very experienced =/
Hope someone can help.
Thanks a lot. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
To turn off RAID, go into BIOS by hitting delete at startup. Go through the menus and siwtch your SATA to AHCI.
As for removing the bottom, there are six screws to remove the bottom panel. It's a little tough to get off though, since there are about a hundred tabs also holding it in place. I think I've broken four of them off already, haha. -
Hi guys is there any option to have a normal gx660-053us with 1080p resolution? Because i dont need a i7 or dual hard drive raid support or anything else.. Please guys help me out
-
Thinking of my configuration for this laptop over at xotic. But just need one final clarification.
Wld the RAID 0 support dual Crucial SSDs? And if so, wld TRIM in RAID 0 for SSD be supported? been looking arnd for this answer for awhile now.... -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
RAID, yes. TRIM, no.
-
SSD's are fast enough as is and in my opinion pointless to have the in RAID 0, I would rather have two independent drives for speed(SSD) and storage(HDD) that way you get the best of both worlds, you install your OS on the SSD for fast boot times and games and other programs on the HDD.

Hmmm I got the black and white bars crash just about now. I blame that I was using 840/1070 clocks for half an hour
Temps were ok, under 72, but I guess the system became unstable? -
Thanks a lot.
Your answers were helpful.
I have a question though.
Is the DVD/CD-Rom drives
Slimtype BD E DS4E1S a blueray drive or just an optical drive?
Hopefully someone can help. -
Sorry I have one more question as the support is not up during the weekend and I get this error with the MSI Burn Recovery.
After I click on the software, I get this error as that says:
OS_Install Drive or Data Drive Label Error.
Please Make Sure OS_Install and Data Drive Label Exist
Hopefully somoene here can help.
Thanks. -
Does anyone notice a difference with raid 0 on doing any CS5 or digital image work w/ the gx660r. Like after effects, premier, final cut pro.etc..any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Hey Guys, can you see the little subwoofer move when you play music or something on it? I am a bit dissapointed with the sound on the laptop. It is very clear and nice but just isn't incredible jump over my last laptop. However I can not see the little sub moving so maybe that is the issue.
Im not sure but i remember there was a way, like you have to do it manually like tony trim... but not sure, never really cared to dig to much as prices were way to high to consider it viable either way.
Maybe. I just know that, as of now, there's no option for automated TRIM on RAIDed SSDs. Which I don't really complain about, since, as IKAS said, RAIDed SSDs are overkill.
Temps have been pretty good on this new machine after I've renamed it. Not as good as my first machine, but I'm wondering if that's because I used MX-3 and aftermarket thermal pads.

Hello All,
I decided to become a fashionably late, early adopter and pulled the trigger on one of these today (i guess yesterday by the time I'm done writing this). Anyway, I got all stock other than TIM (IC7) and wireless card (6200).
The only question I have right now, is how's the heat on the palmrest and left side? All the posts I've seen show great internal temps, and that definitely gives me hope. I only ask because I am RMAing my Envy 17 because the external heat on that abomination of a notebook is ridiculous, 108-117F while playing Crysis, and 90s to low 100 under light use.
Before I bought this I checked the temp measurements for the GT660R and they looked acceptable to me under load. I assume this machine runs even cooler since nVidias typically run hotter. Can anyone who has delt with both machines tell me how they compare, or just give me a general opinion about the external heat of the GX660R?
BTW, just reading the spec sheets of this machine, peeked my interests, but reading all your posts is what convinced me to pull the trigger, so thank you all! -
I don't find it unconfortable at all, I like how it handles all temps so far.
I know you mean no ill! and also, well, good! Now I know I wasn't the only one either due to clocks! I got scared for a bit, but since I was pushing 840/1070 and gaming for a while, maybe it couldn't take it. I don't remember having any issies woth 800/1050 so I will try to go lower for now, maybe 760/1030 to avoid the crash.
As far as I know, that crash was due to memory. And yeah I agree that temps have been phenomenal for the hardware inside. Even though I live in a hot area, I can play without worries.
Anyways, I tried running the Lost Planet 2 Benchmark but it doesn't run, it says "Lost planet 2 has stopped working" on both DX9 and DX11. I am running Cat. 10.8 so maybe that has something to do with it? -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
As for internal temperatures, they're very, very good, especially since you went and did ICD7. I'm testing out Tuniq TX-4--I've used MX-3 before testing it out--and it seems decent. I've also drilled the bejeesus out of my bottom panel, so there's that, too.
For external heat, you might feel it on the leftmost part of the keyboard--that's where the CPU is--and the middle top portion, where the GPU is. I haven't really noticed anything while I've gamed, so I don't think it's bad.
EDIT: Gah, nearly a GB for a benchmark. You're lucky I'm such a nice guy.
EDIT2: It runs fine for me, albeit I got like 21.5 fps with turbo CPU and 840/1050 GPU in DX11. -
I guess "abomination" is probably too strong of a word for my previous laptop, because I've read a lot of posts from happy Envy 17 owners, so it definitely works out for some. It's strange because it also has one of its HDD under the left palm rest, and mine heated up bad. Maybe mine had a baffling defect internally or something.
Anyway, enough of dwelling on the past, I am soon to be a proud owner of the gx660r and I couldn't be more excited. Of course I made the mistake of odering it on a 3 day weekend, so I have that much longer to wait until I have this beast in my hands. -
No, abomination is the right word for the Envy 17. I went through three defective ones before ordering my GX660. Just the other day I played SC2 on high (not ultra settings) for 30-45 minutes my GPU was 93 C and my CPU was 90 C (this was the Envy not the GX660).

Hard to tell. I didn't really look at temps on this machine (it's by second GX660R; first was RMAed) before I started modding.
-
Sorry I have some questions since I'm not very experienced.
Can anybody tell me step by step how to get rid of the raid 0?
Also if I do that how would I reformat the computer?
If I reformat the computer then would I have problems finding drivers for the computer?
Thanks.
Hopefully someone can help.
Thanks. -
SoundOf1HandClapping Was once a Forge
At bootup, hit the delete key. Navigate around the BIOS menus until you find one that lets your change your SATA settings. Change the SATA settings to AHCI.
Since you're taking off RAID, simply install windows again to reformat it. your drivers will be on the drivers disc that came with the laptop. -
I made a review of my GX660r-060US here [Review]MSI GX660R - ATI HD5870, RAID, i7, LED, etc... - FórumGdH
you can use the google translator to translate it from portuguese to english.
