Just Curious Tallguynb How did you configure yours?

I'm in the same boat, and I think I'm going to go with the MSI. The problems of the Asus G73 have kinda turned me off of the brand, I think. Plus, no one knows when the G53 will actually ship.

I allready know the sound is the best ever in a laptop.

I'm so getting this. And i plan to get it from xotic, so i have a question for you justin.

I made a config, with crucial ssd 128 and a tb hdd, rest is stock, and its about 2200 + 160 international shipping.

I live in romania , and it looks like you guys do international shipping. I don't have the money yet, but i noticed you guys don't accept payments from pay pal no us. It would have been the easiest way for me to pay. I load up the romanian credit card with dough that is attached to pay pal, and it should suck it dry. But like i said, i got the message you cannot accept payments from pay pal non us.
That wouldn't be an issue. i could alwasy pay with a credit card directly.

My question is about something else.

I am concerned about how customs handles this shipment.
VAT in my country is 24%, so to those 2360, a 24% VAT would have to be added.

However, how do the customs guys know the shipment (noticed how i said shipment, and not laptop) is a laptop worth 2360 usd ??

Do you guys write the value on the package ?

Could i go telling the customs guys it values is 500 dollars so that i could pay less tax ? it would be 120 usd at a value of 500 and not 500+
The VAT on that value is a hefty 500+ usd. And even with that it is worth it, but it would be nice if i didn't have to pay it.

I would ver much like to know that.
Because the customs guy i bet doesn't even think its a laptop worth 2000+ dollar and could be easily fooled it's a cheaper package.

Or maybe they have a fixed amount of tax for category products ?

Yes we declare/write the value on the machine that you pay us, which is what is supposed to be done. We are a honest business and conduct business in the same way.

I am sorry we will not falsify any information on packages. I would be skeptical of any company that would do this for you. This is not only illegal but could jeopardize future exports.

I perfectly understand. No harm in asking, i just wanted to clarify that, as i wasn't sure wheter or not the value has to be declared.

Even with the 24% VAT, it still comes cheaper than a similar speced clevo 17" wide screen model, the one with the single usb 3.0.

Apart from that you have everything in a smaller package, premium sound, and hd web cam. All for less money even with country VAT.

I don't know. The G53 should have some different hardware in there, so the numerous G73 problems might have been a fluke. Asus in general has been good to me, from notebooks to ODDs to motherboards, so I like the brand itself. But God, the features.

The MSI has hardware RAID, lots and lots of ports, fan control, one-touch overclocking, Bluray as standard, a beastly 5870, the new i7s, and awesome speakers. That said, I am not a fan of glossy palmrests--my G51vx has made me a fan of rubberized surfaces--the orange-ish trim on the speakers doesn't look all that appealing, and even though Ken posted up those temperatures, I'm a little skeptical how one fan--albeit one that blows in two directions--can handle an i7 and a 5870.

As for the G53, it has the same CPU option, dual HDDs (don't know about RAID, even though I personally don't use RAID, anyway), a GTX 460m (which, from what I see, should edge the 5870 out in DX11, but will perform under it in DX9 and DX10), unknown fan control and overclock features, awesome aesthetic design, and dual fans. And while it's more a matter of ATI vs nVidia rather than MSI versus Asus, I'm more comfortable with nVidia GPUs. I know my way around them, be it vBIOS editing, Powermizer, or drivers.

So yeah. I'm now on the fence.

If I do get the MSI, the first thing I'm going to do is drill out some spare vents underneath the fan.

We have not finished running the battery life under different conditions but for the GX660R playing a blu-ray with ECO set in turbo battery mode you will get about 2hrs 10min.

How loud were the fans when running the test, and the overall noise of the system during use? The fan noise was my main turnoff on the GX640, if this thing runs quiet I might have to pick it up (either that or the asus G53, same debate as many others it seems).

From what I can tell the turbo mode fan speed is just maintaining the fan at max level. With auto I'm assuming it'll get that loud, anyway, if the components get hot enough.

Still waiting confirmation from Ken, though.

The cooler boost button bumps the fan up much much higher than i have ever heard it when in auto. Even when severely stressed (overclocked gpu and notebook in turbo mode) I have never heard it go to that speed on auto.

The cooler boost button sets the fan at it's absolute max RPM. The sound is not unbearable, just a rush of air.

Rob, what about the fan noise when the cooler button is not engaged. How did it sound during normal use or when running futuremark as an average and worst case scenario?

I have one running through vantage now overclocked on the VGA and all that can be heard is a very light hiss from the fan. Under normal to extreme conditions the fan is pretty quiet.

Great news - Still waiting to hear some final information on the asus g53 but my thought is I'll end up with that or the MSI. Its pretty significantly smaller than the G53 if the dimensions have been reported correctly, and I need some measure of portability.

In all honesty GodOFWarFaceGuy, if I were looking only at core components (CPU, GPU, HDD, RAM, and screen), I think I'd still be more inclined to wait out for the G53. The thing is the extra ports, hotkeys, hardware RAID, and those speakers are what is nudging me into the GX660R camp.

Also I find the way that they've set up a dual-directional fan is quite ingenius.

Hmm. Well, let me use a comparison. My current laptop, a G51vx has several different distinct RPM levels from what I can tell with my ear.

It's essentially silent when the GPU is under 50C, low speed between 51C and 61C, medium speed between 62C and 85C, high speed (noticeably loud) at 86-93, and super shrieking high speed (REEEEE!) at 94+.

If my computer were the GX660R this would be auto, since the fan speed is governed by temperature thresholds or whatever. But from what I can tell, if you engage the maxfan control, it'll switch the fan, regardless of current component temperature, to super shrieking high speed.

In your case, Rob, I think Vantage just isn't stressful enough to warrant the highest fan RPM (In all usual circumstances Vantage doesn't push my own fan to super shrieking high speed, either).

I would assume that with a tough enough stress test, like Furmark in Xtreme mode, that it would eventually go into max RPM even while in auto. All speculation, of course. How does this machine compare, at idle and normal non-stress-test loads, to something like the G73 or an equivalent Clevo? (I remember several users saying that the G73 is extremely quite).

Can we connect a 5.1 sound system to the MSI GX660 ? It seems to have several audio jacks.
If yes that would be an advantage over the asus model you ppl talk about, because one could use these:
Psyko Audio Labs, Psyko 5.1 PC Gaming Headphones - Home

Thus, the only disadvantage i see on the msi is the the fact that it doesn't have illuminated keyboard.

I sure wish the next iteration will have illuminated mechanical keyboard with fingerprint reader.

    Duly noted CryingSharkFaceGuy ;)
But I think in benchmarks and games they won't be too much of a performance difference, believe me if they were both released at the same time I would more than likely get the ASUS too but the thing that's killing me is the time there wasting on releasing any dates on availability.
They sort of pissed me off when it went up for pre-order and then they pulled it back, I think it was a marketing ploy by ASUS to still be on peoples mind that the "new" G53 is right around the corner when in all reality it's not.
I think all the problems with the G73 made them poop there pants and work harder to get it right and no announcement by Nvidia on the 460GTX has me confused as well considering they were going to announce there new GPU's to the world.
IDK the whole situation is one giant black hole of broken promises and speculation.

I've seen and heard a lot of good things about that headset. Just one thing I'd be worried about is the way that the microphone attaches to the headset. It seems like the jack could become loose with time and the microphone could detach by mistake.

That problem was noted by reviewers with pre-release units and it doesn't seem like the company's done much to address the problem in the final revision.

Actually I would get the MSI if you prefer such form factor, which is same as Clevo's W860CU. Reason being Clevo's W860CU model is like almost 2 years old, and even the most recent 5870MR update is more than half a year ago, of course feature wise it won't be able to compare with the 660 which is only just released with new features like USB 3.0. So if you are buying a new laptop now, I would say get the MSI 660 for more value.
