So I have an MSI gx640 and the motherboard just went bad. Worked perfect until then. I'm planning to get what I can for it and buy a new laptop. How much do you think I could get for it in your experience? Where and how would be the best way to sell it? I paid $1100 for it a couple years ago.

    Thanks for any help.

Thanks for the link. I'd rather not just ship my computer off. Any idea where I can get a new motherboard for it? I've been shopping around and I can't find one anywhere.

Are you sure its the motherboard?? The graphics card is much more likely to fail.

I have a motherboard I could sell you that will fit the laptop with some minor modifications and different parts. But its a much older motherboard from an MSI gt628. The RAM, WIFI and LCD would still work along with the audio + usb board and whatnot, but you'd need a new CPU, graphics card, and heatsink which I could also sell to you. I guess its not too likely you'd want to do this. On the other hand, it would be the only way to get it functional without getting the motherboard repaired. It would be a core 2 quad or duo system with an ATI 4870.

With any luck you might be able to get the motherboard repaired locally. Shops that do base level electronics repair, like repairing Xboxes might be able to fix it. Just depends on how legit they are.

If its the graphics card you really are in luck and have a whole myriad of options and upgrades. I'd recommend a GTX 670m from RJtech for 235$. Should work without much modification at all and will probably run cooler than the original 5850.

There may be one way to get the motherboard. A member here with the username majster_msi seems to be able to get MSI parts. But it would probably be pretty expensive. Can't hurt to PM him about it though.
