    Hey all.
So I've just tested an MXM III card, the quadro FX 2700m, in the msi gx630.

It was an engineering sample but I'm sure that did not contribute to compatibility.
I find this particularly remarkable because while the gx620 was released with as the gt627 with 9800m GS which is a type III card, the gx630 was never released with anything type III. Also, the gx630 only shares the chassis and casing of the gx620, the motherboard, chipset and BIOS are all totally different.

There is no proper heatsink because the mounting holes are different, but without any screws I was able to keep it under 70c while the laptop booted. I do not recommend doing using this method to install drivers or anything, I was only dissipating some heat from the core and making no attempt to cool the VRAM or other components.
With some better modifications and a lot of ramsinks I believe it could work pretty well.

Anyway I hope someone else will see this and take advantage of this upgrade path, as unfortunately I am returning my gx630 to have some money.

Great to know that it works... but a good heatsink mod will be quite difficult and time-consuming...

A pity it doesn't fit... there's no actual use for such a setup as the temps will rise really fast as soon as there some load on the GPU (not to mention gaming)

    But nice work anyway!!

    Well, we'll see about that.

Like I said, the heatsink is all copper, it could be pretty good.
I am working on a heatsink mod, I don't think its going to be very difficult.

Here, I made a few small modifications to the stock heatsink and an MXM III card backplate. I think it will fit MXM III cards pretty well now. Just need some copper for the VRAM and stuff.
I haven't tried it yet because I'm a little worried about the amount of metal shavings I created. but I will clean it off and post results soon.

Good idea! Simple mod, and it should work. However I'd recommend to weld / solder both parts together so there's no chance the heatsink moves.

Yea, just bought some thermal epoxy which should do the trick. soldering would be tough.
Also bought this copper for the other components, people should buy this more often for their mods, its about 10x better priced than the copper marketed for cooling mods. K&S Copper Sheet Metal .025" Peggable (1) K+S5259 - eBay (item 360312821432 end time Feb-19-11 17:22:57 PST)

on an off note it looks like gx730 should be the same, and there is a heatsink you could possibly find from the gt735 which had the 3850. Actually the gt725 heatsink might work as well, I think they are in separate pieces from the CPU heatsink.
