I have an MSI GX660R-060US that I had for the last year. It is a blazing machine. My wife recently wanted a new laptop so she picked up a 17" Asus G74SX Republic of Gamers laptop.

The build quality is far superior to that of my MSI which I shelled out $1900 for. Her Asus was $1250. Are all Asus laptops that much better as per build quality?

It is so much better that I thought about selling my MSI GX660R which is fully loaded for a lesser, better built Asus.

i can compare my gt683dxr with an asus g53. honestly i prefer my msi. asus feels so like filmsy, like its gonna brake or something.

btw i have dropped my lap from a table and nothing happened to it. i feel that the asus would have blown into pieces.

msi is very good, not as good as the quality of an alienware which i admit has good quality even if its overpriced.

i dont know about ur model of msi, but the gt683dxr fells and has proven to be solid to me.

The GT783 is a VERY sturdily built laptop. Probably the most sturdy piece of computer hardware I've owned.

The last Asus I had was a G51 and it was not better in terms of build quality. I have handles the newer G74 and I like the material that is used but I wouldn't say it's better quality than my MSI. Not to mention, the new Asus gaming laptops are beasts in terms of weight and thickness. The G74 is so big, it doesn't even fit into a standard 17" laptop bag. My 17" MSI is much more portable.

While you may prefer the chassis of the Asus, they do not have better build quality where it matters most. Internal parts such has the cooling system are much better with MSI which has been said to use some of the best laptop cooling fans/heatsinks. MSI also uses better displays in their units.

    In the end, I could have purchased a Asus G74 for $1200 but I would have only received a GTX 560m, 720p display, 8gb DDR5 1333 and a CD drive. Instead, I went with MSI and for $1400, I got a GTX 570m, 1080p display, 12gb of DDR5 1600 and a BluRay drive.

All this tells me Asus is a rip off. They are charging to much for what they give you.

The design is clearly different and both are very reliable, no doubt. I can say the G74 model is very durable and sleek, stealth looking. The MSI is more traditional laptop looking and for sure durable with the hard plastic appeal.

Jrwing is right, the G74 is very cumbersome in terms of shape fitting in a traditional bag. But, the ROG bags are suitable. I've hear mixed reviews on the Force models, with the 1761 being the most durable. If you go straight MSI and not FORCE with MSI chassis, the 780's series are extremely dependable models.
