Hey guys, in the market for a new laptop. Looking at the CX623, but never really heard anything about MSI. What's the build quality like on MSI laptops? Thanks.
-
The build quality is OK generally speaking. The one you are looking at has the same chassis as a lot of other lower priced models, and to be honest, they look and feel cheap.

MSIs, in my experience are in all senses of the word: average. Doesn't mean good or bad. Generally, you'll get more performance for the money without the build quality of say an alienware or clevo.
-
Go with Sager or Alienware if you're looking for build quality.

As a new MSI owner, I agree. Keyboard is flimsy, exhaust is on the right side (???) and it is loud. Fortunately, I do not care about any of these drawbacks as the beast that is inside more than makes up for these minor annoyances. But not everybody thinks alike so these minor things may be major annoyances for you. Perspective.

My GT627 had some really bad plastic, cracking everywhere. And the rubber feet fell off. Touchpad goes bad really fast.
I would give it 2 stars out of 5.
The performance makes up for it though -
Thanks a lot guys. Yes the extra performance is quite tempting, but I don't want the laptop to fall apart on me in a few months time and having to spend more money repairing/getting a new one. How would you compare MSI build quality to Asus build quality?
-
If you have the money, go with ASUS.
-
MSI build quality perfect for me.
Because it never leaves the desk and I don't use the touchpad or keyboard. -
While the cheaper models are indeed cheap feeling, my GX640 still looks like new after 6 months, except for the touchpad wear which actually happened as soon as the first two weeks. It is a solidly built laptop and the materials (except for the cheesy quick-launch area) are of good quality. I think the old adage "you get what you pay for" applies here.

2) Good build quality
Choose one.
@OP In all seriousness, you're buying an MSI laptop for its value, not for the beauty or quality of its casing. Because, in all honesty, most MSI laptops look like second-rate junk. It's what's under the hood that counts, right?
The best laptops casings are the unibody Macbook ones, but their components are weak. HP Envy laptops are a good compromise between power and build quality. -

Aluminum is an old material. Macbooks do NOT have the best casing. The chassis of the newest Dell m4500 and e6500 are probably some of the best right now.
Gaming laptops do not equal business laptops.
Clevos use thicker plastic.
What else is there to be said, really? I think MSI makes the best looking high performance laptops I've ever seen. Maybe it takes a more discerning eye to realize they use carbon fiber in the casing. The fact is that they are the lightest and most portable laptops that support modern standardized graphics, but that's not the biggest "quality" point for everyone.
