MSI X340 plus a free external DVD drive! But you have to hurry - ends tomorrow (11/30) (Black Friday special).

Seems like a very good deal to me. Might be US only...not sure. Link here:

I ordered one and tempted to get another. ;)

    Yea,
I am torn between this and the Asus UL30A.
I need to make a decision soon, before the sale ends.

Yes, a tough choice. I might have gone with ASUS as I like 'em, but I could not find one (UL30A) anywhere near this price. I actually got the MSI X320 and other than the keyboard, fairly pleased with it, so when I saw the 340 for only $100 more, I bit. (Now just need to unload the 320 - LOL!)

Seems like a good deal for a model selling for around $800 or so just recently.

Well, it's back to $699.99 now. Mine arrived today, so will be taking it for a spin this weekend.

Beautiful! Its a head turner especially when you're beside a MacBook Air, but too chic for me.

Yes, it's very sleek and sexy looking. ;)

Really, it's the size plus the nice 13.4 inch screen and 1366x768 resolution that's the deal maker for me. I wanted a "better netbook" --which I use mostly for email and web surfing (I'm online a lot) and it's very nice for those uses. Fine also for listening to music, watching video and other light fare. I don't intend to do video editing, photoshop, etc. or much gaming on it, I have bigger, more powerful units for that. But for something I can grab and plop down with near anywhere and surf - it's sweet!

At these prices, it makes sense to me as a "super netbook" -- so I'm happy.

I am considering this as futureshop is selling this for $499. I am debaing between this or a asus 1201N, benchmark tests show that the MSI barely beats out a single atom cpu, would the dual atom in the 1201N perform better than this msi?

I would consider the MSI for the bigger screen and bigger hard drive, but if it has both a lower cpu and videocard I'm not so sure.

I agree with cataclysm, depends on what you will use it for. Here are the Vista windows Experience ratings for my X340:

    Processor 3.6
    Memory 4.9
    Gfx 3.4
    Gaming Gfx 3.5
    HDD 5.7

Here's a quote from an online review of the 1201N (Win 7):

The 1201N's Windows Experience Index rating is 3.1, which is the score for the processor. The gaming graphics score is 5.0 and the hard drive 5.7. It's obviously not a gaming rig, but it's impressive for a netbook, and online games shouldn't be a problem.

Thw 1201N has a smaller screen, same resolution though. Longer battery life and the ion should mean better gfx for games. The X340 is thinner and lighter even with the bigger screen.

I'm very happy with my X340, but the 1201N is an attractive netbook. Performance on the X340 for web surfing and most other things is fine. I'm not having any issues, I can play full screen videos, I can play most older games fine, I can surf with multiple windows and tons of tabs open in firefox.

I think they're very close, so the edge will probably be on subjective things and what is important to you. Battery life (5.5 1201N vs 3.5 X340), screen size 12 vs 13, ultra-thin X340 vs sleek 11201N, and so on. Both seem to be good solid machines.

By the way, amazon has the 1201N for $484 last I checked.

anyone tried to overclock the msi x340 to 1.7-1.8ghz with setfsb?

I remember seeing someone with an acer who overclocked his to 1.75ghz and the results were very good. the only thing is that he had to modify something on his motherboard because it was blocked from factory.

I imagine MSI din't do such a thing.

overclocked to 1.75 he got a WEI of 4.1 for the cpu

    someone even got 1.9ghz
