Does anybody know what's happening with the MSI Wind 6 cell model? I saw a few for sale at online retailers a week or so ago, then they disappeared. MSI is really dropping the ball on this. They have the most desirable netbook that sells at the top end price, but there's no product available.

By the time they actually have units to sell, Dell, Lenovo, etc., will have competing models out that will take the wind out of their sales. I'd like to buy the Wind 6-cell, but I'm considering the Asus Aspire One, because it's more available and cheaper.

I have found the Wind to be a great notebook and wouldn't have you change your mind simply over availability! lol
Check around. I think that newegg.com might still have the 6 cell in stock (if you are in the US) otherwise I think other sites should have some as well. :)
If you're interested I do have a review located here:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=288005

    Hope this helps! :D

P.S. Before you buy at least make sure you go to a retailer and check out screen sizes! I thought that 8.9" would be big enough after seeing 11.1" and the originall Eee (7") but for me it was still WAY too small and toylike. In the end 10.1" turned out to be a great size for function, performance, and battery life. :)

Thanks for the tips! I really would like to go with the Wind, but I'm getting impatient waiting for it to appear. I haven't seen one in person yet, so I will wait until I can get my hands on one to compare.

BTW, Newegg is out of stock like everybody else.

You're welcome! I hope that you can hold out, because I know that they've been going in and out at most places very quickly... so keep searching! It's worth it! :D

As for seeing one, I know that Bestbuy is carrying them but I'm not sure if their stores have them yet...

I can't wait anymore... not to mention the Wind is a lot more expensive than it was supposed to be... at least, everywhere I've found it. I'm going to get the Acer AspireOne as soon as the 160gig, 6cell version comes out for $399 in Sept.

I know what you mean. The Wind is selling for about $600 in most cases, when you can find it at all. The prices are coming down for other models and $400 looks like a good price right now. I would be tempted to save $200 and then update somewhere down the road when the next gen comes out.

I would be happy if the Wind came down to maybe $500. Then it would probably be worth the difference.

It might be worth it at 500, but still, it's a tough call. It would have to be 500 for the 6 cell version. Then all you're really getting is a larger screen. Which is nice, yeah but... who knows if it will happen anyway. They probably have a couple weeks to get me before the version of the Acer that I want is in stock... so they'd better hurry ;)

well everywhere I have found it it's only $500 so I'm not sure where you guys are looking but...

Also, look at the new Aspire One review here... I am surprised that it is a 10" form factor but only a 8.9" screen. :S Also a tad surprised that they would go with a glossy screen. Idk... but for me those two things along with the touchpad make the aspire one just a bad choice...

But it may be a good one for some people... Just my $0.02.

Now I have both the Wind (white) and the AA1 (blue). My mini comparison between the 2 are as follows:

    1. Wind is quiet most the time (noisy when the Wind fan starts and then quiet down a few seconds later) but the AA1 is running the fan all time. AA1 is noisy all the time.
    2. AA1 HDD is also warmer and noisier.
    3. AA1 is about $100 cheaper though.
    4. Startup time and shutoff time Wind is better.
    5. Wind is also better in hibernation
    6. AA1 is about 1/2" smaller on width and length and slightly under 1kg.
    7. Battery life with Wind is slightly better about 10 to 15 minutes more than the AA1, both of them are 3 cells.
    8. The Wind screen is better, bigger, less glossy and better viewing angle
    9. The AA1 keyboard feels more solid than the Wind keyboard (flexy)
    10. The moment I got the AA1 off the box, my finger prints were all over the AA1 casing, yes, I knew that before I bought it so no complain. It does not clean up easy with the felt paper that came with it.
    11. The Wind has bluetooth, AA1 does not come with the bluetooth
    12. The AA1 has one multicard reader (like the Wind it will stick out about 1/4" when an SD card is inserted) and one SD card reader (completely flush in to the edge, nice feature)
    13. The mini PCI-E HSPDA connector is not in the AA1 though space is provided, so there is no upgrade in the future. Don't count on it!
    14. The Wind bag provides better protection than the AA1 bag
    15. The AA1 did not come with the XPH disc and the driver disc, the Wind has both.
16 AA1 touchpad is better and more accurate especially when copying files to othe drives.

    Edit:
I used Acer's eRecovery to restore the AA1 XPH C:drive and found the fan was no longer running all time. The battery life now has improved to 2.5 hours. Now, I like this AA1 more than my Wind as I lay down on my couch and surf the internet with my one hand grip between the display and the main casing, a better feel than holding my Wind on the couch.

There's a program you can download to fix the fan situation with the AspireOne. You'll be able to Get the 6 cell version of the AspireOne (or at least you'll be able to in about 2 weeks)... All of the Winds I'm seeing online only have an 80 gig HD. The AspireOne XP (6 cell) comes with a 160g.
The other issues... I'll definitely consider, but I have to Find the Wind, 6 cell, at a good price... Do you have some suggestions?

I'm seeing the 3 cell MSI wind around for over $500. Unless they feel a serious squeeze by the AspireOne competition, I doubt they'll get close to the $399 for the One. I have a main laptop and a couple desktops... I just can't see spending a couple hundred more for the difference.

Yes the AA1 with 6 cells and 160GB plus additional SD card reader at $150 cheaper than the Wind is definitely better bang for the bucks despite of minor quirks. Not every one needs a bluetooth though.

Well I just got my wind yesterday (3 cells) and i'm pretty disappointed of it's battery. I'm not a massive user but the battery is over after a little bit more than one hour.

Anyway, when they will release 6 cell version ? will that be possible to buy only the battery ?

    Thanks!

I call shenanigans. There's no way that even with wireless and bluetooth on and full screen brightness and sound that you would get an hour...

I too am debating the Acer One and MSI Wind, I did see an XP Acer at Best Buy and it looked nice. Screen appeared to be fine but I think that extra inch or so would even be better.

Would love to hear more about those who own an MSI wind and their battery experiences (especially the 6cell).

    Yarden,

Over on the MSIWind.net forum, there is a discussion going on about our developing a 9-cell 7800mAh battery for release in late October. We've started a waiting list for those who want to be updated on it. As for the 6-cell, we have begun taking "Pre-Orders" for the new 6-cell battery from MSI. According to MSI, we'll be able to begin shipping them late September. But the price is pretty high. If you're able to wait, I'd go for the Mugen Power 9-Cell once we have it available.
