    MSI Wind
    [IMG]
This is going to be one to watch.

Price in Europe will be about 400 euros

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=newsdesc&news_no=602

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MSI_Wind_PC
The MSI Wind PC is a subnotebook computer designed by Micro-Star International (MSI). It was first announced at CeBIT 2008,[1] and first listed for pre-orders on 9th May 2008[2]. There will be 8- and 10-inch versions supporting a relatively high resolution of 1024×600. Storage will be via a 80GB 2.5-inch hard drive with solid-state drive likely to be an option later on; 1 GB of RAM will be standard. Pricing is currently at £349 for the XP version and £319 for the Linux version, which is on the low end of the initial estimate of between £299 to £699 when first announced.[3] The price points for the UMPC for US market have also been released. The SuSe Linux version will cost $399 and the Windows XP version will cost $550. Only the 10" LCD model will be available for the US market. Online retailer Expansys is currently taking pre-orders on their U.S. website, with pricing inflated to $604 for the Windows XP version and $560 for the Linux version[4].

It will feature one of the new Intel Atom 45-nm processors running at 1.6 GHz. Also featured is Bluetooth, WLAN and a 1.3MP camera. The Wind PC is seen as MSI's response to the successful ASUS Eee PC. It will feature full support for Linux and Windows XP Home Edition, but it will not support Windows Vista. The device may fall into a newly defined category of Netbooks.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to this little machine! Having a read of

    http://msiwind.net/

I notice they managed to install Vista onto it and run it quite well. It got an Aero score of 4.1, which really surprised me!

Nice! I will closely monitor the outcome of this ultra portable. I might buy one though I already have Dell XPS M1210 and M1330.

I am really waiting for an official list of models and specs.

I have heard that they will range from 399$ to close to 700$. It really looks like it can beat the EEE if they play there cards right but its 10" big and if its up to 700$ your only 2" away from a much better notebook like the dell 12" so they really need to work on price/features and find a good spot.

I want one with EEE like specs & bluetooth for like 400-450$ and I would be happy.

I have been looking at Compact flash to SATA adapters. For a single CF card they are pretty cheap. Together with a 16GB high speed CF it should come to about 100€.
Should give you less weight (maybe 100g), less power consumption and less noise and heat. Even with the upgrade it would still be pretty cheap.

All depends on the real prices of all the Atom machines... MSI Wind, Acer One, Asus eee 901 and 1000. I dont think any have confirmed prices.

They've posted up a link to the user manual for the MSI Wind, and I noticed that the processor is an Intel Diamondville. Anyone know what that is? Is that just another codename for the Atom processor or is it a unique one?

Its supposedly going to be 399 for the Linux version (which has 512 RAM and no bluetooth and 3 cell vs. 6 cell) and should be coming to your local Costco and BestBuy around mid June. I'm hotly anticipating its release but will probably wait till Dell and Acer roll out their models so I can compare.

Diamondville is the processor name for the notebook version of Silverthorne. It is also called Atom, while the handheld device version is Centrino Atom. Get it?

Bah, 399$ sounds pretty good for what you get compared to the EEE but it doesnt have what I need so I have to wait for the "other" version what ever that will be.

From the way you worded it zoogle I guess there will be a windows version with bluetooth, a 6 cell battery, and bluetooth?

Yes, the XP version has bluetooth and a 6 cell battery. Although apparently there is currently a shortage of batteries (a fire somewhere overseas?) so the initial XP batch will only come with a 3 cell battery until they make more.

    Also, have a look at

    http://blog.laptopmag.com/mini-review-msi-wind-nb

for a basic review. It's strange that they're not allowed to talk about the chipset until the official announcement on June 3rd, yet MSI have already released a user manual with the full specs inside!

Yeah, they're saying it's around $399 for the Linux version, and approximately $500 for the XP edition. I'll definitely get one if it's $500. Although, hopefully they'll drop the price a bit if they only ship with the 3 cell battery.

According to the site the only thing your 100$ gets you is bluetooth and windows... or am I missing something else?

Thats a big shame because I absolutely need bluetooth for what i want to do, so I have to pay the 100$ more for the windows version when I would have been just fine with linux, and infact I wanted the linux version to give it a shot. So wonder if you can buy the BT card and install it yourself.

I feel that a 6 cell battery, in addition to bluetooth and the XP license justify the $100 price difference. Linux version only gets you a 3 cell battery.

i think there is a mistake there... the XP version comes with 1GB DDR so that's (+ bluetooth, 6 cell and XP) what the $100 difference is for ;)

Ok yeah and the battery too so it makes sense and is worth it.

Did they ever make an official statement on if 6cell is going to ship tho? I remember some speculation that 3cell will be coming with the unit due to a shortage, also just read that upgrading your ram voids your warranty... strange.

However I dont think they would ever be the wiser if you just take the ram out before having to send it back if something did go wrong.

I want one ^^ now lets hope 499$ is what we actually see on retailer sites and not more due to inflation.

dont worry about the price... it will be a 399 Linux version and two XP versions: 499 and 549 :D
also don't worry about the warranty! who will pay 99 for 3 years of warranty on this cheap lil fella ? :)

Meh I know its cheap to some but 500$ + tax is still a bit chuck of change for me. I pretty much have to choose between the Wind or upgrading my C90S to a C90P I think, plus I really need to start to save for a new desktop.

You know you have a problem when your laptop is faster than your desktop :p

Care to elaborate on the 2 Xp versions? I thought it was only 1.

Yeah, apparently the 512meg of ram is a typo, and the XP version gets the 1 gig of ram. All the review sites have been saying that it's definitely 1 gig, so lets hope MSI made a typo and will change it back.

I don't think the increase of $100 is a lot at all. You're talking INTEGRATED bluetooth, plus a bigger battery and a licensed XP, plus a 1GB stick.

I want a MSI Wind!! I waited and waited on the Eee... mainly because I'm a very very fast touch typist and I couldn't touch type on the one a co-worker had, though I know people say you can get used to it. I figured it would be worth it once the 900s came out and the 7" dropped in price.

After seeing the specs on the Wind it looks like everything I've been waiting for.

One sort of funny comment I saw on one blog post about the wind went something like...

"I hope the build quality is good, else people will be breaking Wind all over the world" ;)

Too bad google cant translate videos! they should make something for that.

looks like they scored 588 in 3dmark03. I wonder what resolution it ran with 800x600 I guess.
588 makes it a lot weaker then the ATI x200 and GMA 950. Around the level of a Geforce 4Go and the Radeon 9000. Should run HL games like CS 1.6 ok still. It close to the eee 900/701 when they run the cpu at 900mhz.

Battery live is pretty bad with the 3cell. 3:10 max with everything off or low. Should get around 2:30 in normal use. Not enough for the average collage class.

I think I am gonna drop the wind of my to get list.

I got hit by the urge to build a new desktop and I think I do need it more than a ultra portable.

I have had that 1920x1080 37" display for awhile now and not enough power to play my games at that setting, so its time to fix that.

Im still going to follow the winds development and marketing tho to see how it does.

The Wind is already on sale here in China...with an MSRP of about $700  It's currently an introductory special for $625 -probably a bit lower once you start counting out the bills- but needless to say I'm hoping the Wind will make it to the US by the time I go back for the summer holiday. They only had a pink version on display, but since the white interior carries over on all models, the lid was easily ignored. I'm still trying to decide if I can live with a blinding white keyboard, palmrest and bezel; beyond that, I could definitely live with the design & build quality.

MSI did a really nice job with the Wind; the original EEE PC looks like something made by Mattel in comparison.

WHAT? its selling in China for the equivalent of 700 USD? how many RMBs is it selling for?

i personally think that the white looks better somehow. but for some reason i would prefer the all black one.
