    Hey all,

I'm looking at getting some new workstation laptops for work. I'm looking for real quad core chips (either HQ or Xeon), so that pretty much leaves MSI and Dell as my choices.

Does MSI step up the quality more on their workstation laptops compared to the gaming series?

And how is their ongoing support? This is probably the bigger issue. With Dell, I know I'm going to have 3 years worth of support at least. I'm still getting BIOS updates on laptops over 3 years old. At least with my experience, MSI has been quicker to drop support on older models. That's fine for a consumer market, but won't fly for business.

And how does the WE series hold up? I've seen some WE62/72s and WS63s that could meet my need and approximate budget. My main questions are do the WEs have NVMe M.2 slots and how many memory slots do they have?

    Thanks,

    Super

I don't believe MSI has any different service department for the W series compared to their G series models. The quality seems to be about the same, but with some minor adjustments (maybe on ports, OS, processor or graphics, etc...). We haven't sold near the volume of the work stations as compared to the gaming models, but it seems like they do have a pretty low return rate from what I've seen though.

The WE series is pretty new, so there isn't a real track history on that compared to the WT or WS models. But in my opinion, the comparable GE models seem to have some of the best reliability from what I've seen. They have 1 NVMe slot and 2x slots for ram.

Thanks for your insights. I have to write up a business case to justify the purchase, and one of the aspects that's asked about is support. Dell has a sizeable presence already with our organization, so the fact that they can come out here and deliver parts if needed is helpful. If MSI would be willing to overnight parts, that could help. I don't have access to pricing, and they like options when stuff is priced out, so I figured I'd compare with MSI.

Comparable model I'm looking at is a Dell Precision 7520.

Yeah, that is the one thing I like about Dell is just some of their warranty options. They can do things like overnight and on-site repair because of their size. Smaller manufacturers don't have quite the luxury of that. Overnight shipments on parts isn't something I've seen MSI do really, but I don't think I've had to ship out parts on a W series model myself. I'd say they probably would be the same on those models as they are on the G series shipments for sending it typically by ground shipping speeds. Might still be worth asking MSI directly to see what they say.

Yeah, I might have to shoot them an email and see what they say. For me personally, I'm ok with waiting a bit for things to be fixed, but if it's a tool I'm relying on for work, that's a different story.
