Looking forward to the US release as well. The A4-5000 is a must for me. I'd also greatly prefer the 500GB drive over the SSD as I already have a spare SSD and could use the extra HDD. Backlight keyboard sounds cool too.

Well I've been asking around and haven't heard anything from MSI as to availability in the US. I don't think we'll see it in store shelves by Christmas, unfortunately.

 

I contacted MSI directly through two different emails they provide on their USA website and never got a response. I don't think we'll be seeing the S12/S12T in the USA this year either.

I did notice that Lenovo has begun selling their x140e with an A4-5000. I think the S12T is the cooler option, though.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X140E with A4-5000 looks like a decent alternative but that $550 price tag puts me off. Lenovo is pretty good about releasing coupons and their Barnes and Noble Gold discount store usually discounts it even further. It's also heavier (probably more durable), comes with Windows 7 Professional and doesn't have touch or an mSATA port. However, ThinkPads are generally very good in terms of durability and quality and they have GREAT warranty support. It would be cool to see a head-to-head review of these two machines. I'll probably go with the MSI S12T as it has the features I really want plus its a little lighter.

I'm with you. Putting aside the the quality that comes with a ThinkPad I like the specs of the S12T better. I'm not expecting the S12T to be any cheaper, though.

I do find it odd that Lenovo is only shipping the x140e with 7 when the pictures have it running 8. It wouldn't bother me too much, though (especially since I have a spare 8 upgrade license).

Great find there! I've been checking for US retailers just about every day and haven't been able to find anything. That's very tempting but I'd like to buy it from Amazon and use my Prime 2-day shipping.

They have product pictures (thought they look stock) and even list the specs (though it says on backorder). The one thing I liked a lot was that Excalibur pc made mention that the system will come with 4GB of 1600MHz DDR3 (which is the max the APU supports) so you won't necessarily have to upgrade that further. I figured they were going to cheap out and go DDR3 1333.

It's a shame on the lack of CES coverage but as long as it's going to be in stock somewhere I'll be a happy camper.

I purchased it just a few moments ago. Going to replace the hard drive and the WiFi with the SSD and Intel 6330 (I think?) that I have in my current notebook. I hope they're both compatible.

All the listings I've read have said the OS is Windows 8 (which doesn't matter too much since I'll be replacing it with a fresh install of Windows 8 Pro with media center) but it seems odd it just wouldn't come with 8.1.

Awesome man! Please post the display part number using Device Manager and HWiNFO64. I'm hoping this model comes with the IPS display. For $500 it would only seem fair. Also, take a picture of the insides with the access panel removed, I'm curious to see how everything is laid out in there.

At this point in time its very weird that it didn't come with 8.1.

Adding the SSD and 6300 are good ideas.

I'm using a 4 year old LG netbook with an SSD and Killer 1103 while my MSI GT780DX is at the service center getting the graphics card replaced and 2 bad memory modules covered by my 3 year extended warranty.

How to best get the 3rd antenna installed in the S12T is the unknown.

If you plan eventually upgrade your router to an AC model in the near future it may be well worth putting an Intel AC-7260 wireless card in it that needs only the 2 antennas.

Got this puppy in the mail on Tuesday and only really had a small amount of time to play with it. To answer your question about the display panel type: definitely not IPS, unfortunately.

I'll have some serious time to play with it this weekend, so I'll be able to take some pictures of the more interesting bits then.

I'm saddened to hear about the display panel definitely not being IPS. However, 11.6" IPS displays like in my Acer Aspire V5-122P exist so that could always be an upgrade possibility for the future.

I'd like to hear and see how you get the 3rd antenna installed.

The screen size is a bit too small for my liking....old eyes.

The Asus Transformer Book Duet TD300 shown at CES has my interest.It's a bit larger and dual boots both Windows 8.1 and Android.4.2.2

 

More bad news unfortunately:

1. To open the back panel to upgrade anything (save for the battery) you must void the warranty. There is a screw blocked by a "warranty void if tampered sticker".
2. The wireless card is no where to be found on the underside of the laptop (e.g. where the memory/hard drive are) and definitely not where the manual says.

 

Bit of good news: The underside panel is fairly easy to remove (compare to my last 11.6" notebook). You really only need to pry off the bottom after you remove all of the screws. and the only hidden one is the one under the warranty sticker. Also, found the wireless card. It's tucked away under the panel pretty much right behind the VGA port Going to replace the card with Intel one.

Oh and WhatsThePoint, I wasn't planning on adding the third antenna. Too much work for very little gain in my case as my router can only do 300Mbps max.

 

The WiFi card should be underneath the touch button panel if it wasn't on the D side (bottom chassis).

Below is the underside of the laptop (unopened). Be sure to note the warranty void if tampered sticker. The red circle is where the screw to open the access panel is.


MSI is really tab friendly with this laptop which is nice because it reduces the screws. In fact, all of the screws are on the bottom and none of them are hidden (save for the one under the warranty sticker). The thing that sucks about this arrangement is all of the tabs are plastic. I was unlucky enough to already have one break off when I removed the whole bottom panel but luckily there aren't any negative aesthetic affects. I heavily suggest investing in a set of nylon plastic pry tools if you don't have any already.


Here's the inside under the access panel. Notice that the WiFi card is nowhere to be found from this position but the mSATA/mPCIE slot is easily accessible. There are two memory slots (which I was surprised to see).


Here's the whole underside panel taken off and you can finally see the WiFi/bluetooth card in the bottom left hand corner. Only two antennas, which isn't much of a surprise.


The Intel Centrino 6330 fit well and works great (even with 2 antennas). It also accepted the Patriot Pyro 60GB SSD I had and man is this thing flying.

I would love to give you guys a more formal review but work is picking up and I doubt I'll have time. With that said, if you would like to see something specific just let me know and I'll get around to answering it when I can.

 

I've got two requests.

1. Plug in your AC adapter and set the Windows Power Plan to High Performance. Open Task Manager, select the Performance tab and take a look at the CPU clock speed. What is the clock speed (the range)? Put the computer to Sleep. Then, wake it up and check the clock speed again. What is the clock speed (the range)?

In my Acer Aspire V5-122-0600, doing this 'sleep-and-wake' while using the AC adapter in High Performance will cause the A6-1450 CPU clock speed to become locked at 1.4GHz (Turbo Core/Turbo Dock), instead of normally fluctuating from 1.0-1.4GHz. I realize the A4-5000 does not have Turbo Core/Turbo Dock and its highest clock speed is 1.5GHz but I'm curious what clock speed (fluctuating) range you normal see. Is it always running at 1.5GHz?


2. Can you try overclocking the CPU/GPU?

The Radeon HD 8250 GPU's core clock in my A6-1450 can be overclocked from its normally maximum 400MHz to 497MHz using MSI Afterburner (I used 300 Beta 18). The difference is noticeable in gameplay (I only play Minecraft for now) and in most GPU benchmarks. On average the difference results in a 10-15% increase in performance. Its really unfortunate the A6-1450 doesn't support anything but DDR3-1066, DDR3L-1066 and currently there's no way of overclocking this either.

Your A4-5000's Radeon HD 8330's core clock operates at 500MHz and supports DDR3-1600, DDR3L-1600 RAM. Combined with the 1.5GHz clock speed of the CPU, it outpaces the A6-1450 even when both the CPU and GPU are overclocked (14.GHz/497MHz). I'm wondering if it can be overclocked?

The only one year MSI warranty is not a good thing.

I just got my out of warranty MSI notebook back from MSI service with a new "Waarrany Void If Removed"sticker on the bottom covering one screw.

This new sticker is different than previous stickers I've had on my MSI notebooks in that it's designed to come apart if you try to peel it off.

Previous stickers were easily peeled off using thin blade under 1 corner.

Consumers in the US have the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act to protect them from companies denying a warranty claim when a consumer added their own hardware or or other action that didn't cause damage to the part being claimed under the warranty.

Breaking the sticker on a US MSI notebook under the Magnuson-Moss Act does not void your warranty.

If by chance you did damage something the warranty would only be voided on the part damaged and not the entire unit.

1. Unplugged it fluctuates between 0.96 and 1.47GHz using the task manager. Plugged in it stays locked at 1.47GHz on the task manager so I didn't bother to do the wake sleep method. What's weird is that CPU-Z shows 1500MHz whereas task manager shows 1.47GHz. I wonder what that is about.

2. I'm going to pass on overclocking for now. Perhaps another user (and maybe that'll be me someday) will be more adventurous in the future, sorry.

It brought my runtime up from 4-5 hours to 8-10 (depending on what I'm doing really, if it's pure gaming the 3 cell probably only provides 3 hours; 6 hours with the 6 cell). The battery linked doesn't perfectly match the underside finish, but it fits snuggly and securley and hasn't blown up on me -- which is always nice.

At any rate, I saw fit to upgrade the S12T with a mSATA SSD and everything installed without a hitch. I used this one in case anyone was interested: Plextor M6M PX-128M6M Mini-SATA(mSATA) 128GB SATA 6Gb/s Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) - Newegg.com

It goes into the mSATA port that's soldered next to the SATA ports (it'll be the first one you see when you open the laptop up).

I am going to add a 32GB mSATA SSD to it as well, and I planned to use it together with the 500GB hdd came with the notebook, is it possible to do so?

Did u discard the original hdd came with the notebook, and just upgraded it with a mSATA? Or did you also combine the mSATA together with the hdd and made it a SSHD?

 

I am still wondering if there's method that I could actually combine the SSD and the HDD together, like what my other laptop (which is using Intel processor) does - using Intel SRT method to combine both the SSD and HDD together.

Anyone has any idea on how to deal with this?

It's called Intel Smart Response, which requires supported chipset to achieve.
You will need a HDD as your primary drive, and SSD as secondary.
Set SATA mode to RAID, but with no arrays created.
Load OS and load RAID driver via USB flash drive, then install Intel RST software.

I know the Intel Smart Response Technology will work well on my laptop if I'm having an intel processor.

The thing is, I'm trying to figure out if there's any software/drivers out there which will work well for a laptop that has an AMD processor.

I'm going to get this: MSI Global S12T

Not sure if I can do it like how the Intel SRT does, to RAID the SSD + normal HDD together?

AMD doesn't have such technology, and if you have a 250GB SSD then you won't really need such technology.
S12T has 1 x 2.5" SATA bay + 1x mSATA bay.
