I am considering to buy the MSI PE70. Here, there are two machines, one with a dual core and one with a quad core. I am very sensitive about noise, and somewhat about heat. Of course, I assume that the quad core version could produce at least a little more of both. What I wonder is if one can change settings in a way that the quad core version produces a lot less noise and heat, so that I can buy that version with good conscience for the few times when I actually need it (chess analysis).

Another question I have is if it is possible to replace the graphics card with something less demanding (anything, really), in order to reduce noise and heat.

I only consider the machine due to the input devices (seemingly good touchpad, and large arrow keys, as opposed to HP ProBook 470 G2) and good CPU capabilities, but mostly the computer will be used for everyday tasks like word processing, browsing and video streaming, with the occasional possibility of powerful chess engine analysis.

Since they have the same cooling systems the fan and noise output is going to be the same regardless of the CPU in there. While one CPU may run a little cooler then the other, under load they will still tell the cooling system to run at max settings.

The GPU's cant be changed in this model. If you're looking for a step down in GPU look at the GP72 series.

The quad cores can turn off cores they do not need, so the full power of the quad is only tapped when needed.
