My MS-1727 (GX740 barebones) have been shutting down randomly while playing L4D. I know my temps are... decent... for this laptop, and never reach 95 while gaming without a cooler (it never reaches 90 with a cooler).

Could the problem be with the laptop drawing in too much power? I have a 920xm processor installed in it, and when I boot the laptop after it having shut down, it runs on battery until I replug the AC adapter. Maybe I need to buy a better AC adapter, like from Targus?

    Is the adapter 120W?

Maybe you should try 200/220W or at least 160W.

You say the temperatures are of a fairly good range, which tool are you using to measure your temperatures?

Could definately be your adapter if you got a 120w one though, i'm sure people have had really heavy power drain using i series 9** processor.

I am not sure of which AC adapter I have. This is what it says on the bottom, though:

    Model: ADP-120ZB BB
    Input: 100-240V ~ 2.0A(2.0A) 50-60Hz
    Output: 19V 6.32A(6.32A)

    I use HWmonitor.

When my computer shuts down (it does it rarely), the computer runs on battery mode even if the ac adapter if plugged in. After I replug it (to both the DC jack and the power outlet), it runs on AC again. To me this sounds like a clear indicator that the problem is with the AC adapter, but I'd prefer to have some kind of confirmation.

My 920xm is an ES bought from ebay. It has only done so randomly with L4D 1. Its probably just luck it hasn't done the same with L4D 2 or other games.

    19V x 6.32A = 120W.

If you get a new power adapter, can you post a link to the model because I think I need one too :)

I had a similar issue when I switch to my smaller ac adapter...
Remove the battery, run Furmark with the temp graph and check if the temp rises and then fall sharply every few seconds... If the graph has a jig-saw look it might be indeed because the adapter isn't powerful enough ;-)

I ran furmark for about 10 minutes. Later I will have more time and will post a screenshot. It reached 87C, and did not have any sharp declines (yet). It might if I leave it on for long enough.

I'm looking for a charger. I'm sure I saw a link to a ~200W AC adapter around here but haven't been able to find it again.

BTW, my machine is the one with a 5870, not a GTS 250m.

I use Targus 180W PSU and it works like a charm. I bought it on ebay for around $50.

That is what I was looking for.. guess I'll have to buy one. I hope it works like yours, since I have a slight distrust for third party AC adapters.
