Both sport the same graphics card (8600M GT) but I have been hearing a lot of good things about the Asus and nothing about the GX700. What's the deal? Which is better overall?

The G1/2S has GDDR3 memory on the 8600 while the MSI has DDR2. The DDR2 is slower and performance are about 2/3 of the GDDR3 one when you put moderate resolution & AA.

The Asus also comes with a 2 years warranty while the MSI is 1 year.

The MSI has a 4.1 subwoofer soundsystem though.

    The G1S is 15.4'' @1680x1050 and the G2S is 17'' @1920x1200

See that's the thing. I want the best performance possible. And also, since I am going to be moving a bit around campus, do you suggest I get the G1s? And also, can the G1s be a desktop replacement?

Best performce would be the Asus. You can use it as a desktop replacement. The G2S is meant to be one though, but will be a bit harder to move arround
