I bought a MS-16f2 from RK Computers, got everything installed, and get a black screen when I power on. Power button remains illuminated, but no output to the screen. I checked the cable underneath the front bezel to see if it might have been disconnected (I had RK install the wireless card), but everything seems to be properly connected.

I assumed this was simply a RAM compatibility issue (I used a set of Mushkin initially, and the paperwork that came with the laptop indicated that Kingston or Crucial would be the most compatible), so I ordered some Kingston memory. Alas, still not working. I don't feel like ordering more RAM, and presume memory is not the issue after all.

Is there anything I might have missed? When powered on, everything seems to be running. The fan comes on, the processor heats up, and RK indicated they had boot tested the unit prior to shipping. Perhaps a bad CPU? Something doesn't add up, any help would be appreciated :)

    Processor: i7 2720 ES
    RAM: 8gb Mushkin Kit - 996647
    8gb Kingston Kit - KVR1333D3SOK2/8GR

Have you tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor? That may eliminate either the video card or the laptop screen as the culprit.

Another common cause is the CPU socket not locked or not locked completely.

If the CPU lock is not the problem it is possible you have a bad CPU.

If you need any help you can contact us by phone or email.

Thanks for the idea, however I couldn't get a picture. Neither the VGA nor HDMI (I would assume some drivers might be necessary for HDMI to function) would output a signal.

    Any other ideas?

What would a complete lock be? I did lock the CPU in, perhaps I did not lock it completely? Should the protruding part of the locking piece be pointed towards the first HD bay?

If you look at the cpu socket you see a picture of a lock "unlocked" and another "locked". The tab on the screw should be pointing at the locked lock icon. If you look close it can only rotate so far before it hits the stop. Don't go past the stop or you will break the socket.

Gotcha, that did the trick. Thanks much!

Both of the RAM kits worked btw, guess I'll have to settle with 16 gigs now ;)

Haha, this is the same as all the times I had to tell 1366/1156 owners to swap the memory sticks from one set of slots to the other.
