When I got the laptop, I first updated its vbios and then decided to update the gpu driver to 10.5 (MSI provided). Before the driver update, idle temperature (after vbios update) was around 55. Now when I updated the gpu driver, idle temp went back to 63-65, which would be under factory settings. Is there a way to restore the idle temperature? I tried re-updating vbios after gpu update, but it didn't help. Thanks!

Straight out of the box I went to ati catalyst website and downloaded 10.7.
My Idles temps are around 48 with the cooler.

I think that's the common practice here, but I could be wrong.

Also playing around with the overdrive page I accidentally left it overclocked. Even though it was at the lowest setting (max stock speed), it locks in the processor speed and therefore the video card acts like you never downloaded the vbios. If you uncheck overclock the vbios would kick in and underclock the gpu for low demanding applications.

You were absolutely correct! I had the ati overdrive checked for the fan control, and after disabling it, idle temp went back to normal. Thank you very much! + rep when I can; apparently I need to spread my reputation, whatever that means.
