Thanks for the help everyone

Also would I be able to run game son dolphin emulator smoothly?
-
For that price you can get much better
You can probably find something around i7-2670qm, gtx570, 8gb
i bought my GX740 for $300 with a i7-840qm, 5870, but only 1680x1050 screen -
Oh thanks! Just wondering where did you get it from for 300? :O And I guess i just got caught up in how beautiful I think it looks lol
any other laptops you recommend around the price mark, or any specific companies? I was also a sucker for the WASD lights. -
your price mark plus selling the 11x will get you much further, thats all i can say
-
alright thanks for the input I really appreciate it
I plan on getting the money from selling my Alienware m11x. Thanks a lot guys i'll be sure to look into some more laptops. Hopefully I can get a really good one. Again thanks a lot! If anyone else can offer any more input that would be awesome!

If you are up to it, grabbing a barebone and building it yourself can make a lot of sense.
-
That would sound like a fun but with the knowledge I have with computers I wouldn't want to take the risk thanks though
I found this inspiron 17R with Nvida gt 650M and an i5 for 600. Ill probably be getting that now I just have to find someone to buy my alienware m11x r2 xD
-
if you put it on ebay I believe they will charge you 10% of the selling price, if you can post on the market place here at a reasonable price i'm sure there will be people buying it, just another reminder that international shipping costs a lot and the tax does apply when sending items overseas, always use traceable insured shipping and payment platforms that protects both the buyer and seller to prevent fraud. I've once sold an item on ebay where the buyer claimed that the payment was sent, but through a fake paypal platform, make sure you check that the payment sent email if from the actual site, if you log in with your account on a fake platform your personal details and passwords WILL be compromised
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
You can check who the sender is and the link, but yeah going straight to paypal.com yourself in the browser is always a good way to check. I had someone try that and I laughed at them and had it reported.
-
it really does look like paypal is the only secure platform around the world except china, when dealing with sellers from china beware as there is a database somehow accessible to find ID/ passport number with the correct names, if that name and ID number is not used on their secure payment platform(alipay), they will get through the verifying process regardless, I've seen a case where someone found out when registering on alipay that his ID/ passport number is already registered with another account..... just so you know, identity leak is like this serious, especially when people commit crime on these payment platforms with someone else's personal details registered
-
Wow thanks for all the help guys and yea i'll for sure be careful about all the scammers. I wanted to actually sell here instead of Ebay cause of the charged but I have to be a member for at least 3 months and have 100 postsOh well I'll probably sell it on Kijiji, I got offers for 600 and 650
I'm selling it with the belkin notebook cooler and an Alienware Neoprene sleeve.
-
I have a Medion Akoya X7811 (same as GX740) and I'm TOTALLY happy with it since 2011!!
It's totally stable and reliable
I made a few upgrades and modifications to be up to date(look at my signature)
-
Oh whoa that thing is a beast! I personally have done nothing but upgraded the RAM. But that machine is looking good! Just one more quick question to anyone that could help me out. I got a trade offer for ASUS G71GX with the following specs (and comes with box and everything):
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9000 / 2.0 GHz (Quad-Core)
Memory: 12GB
Hard Drive 1: 128GB SSD
Hard Drive 2: 1TB SATA
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M
Display: 17" 1920x1200
Optical: Blu-Ray / DVD-Writer
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Extras: USB 3 ExpressCard
Thanks everyone I really appreciate all the input i'm getting from everyone notebook review has always been helping me with my problems and I just recently decided to make an account. Hopefully i'll be able to give back to this community one day. -
What price ?
The main components are a little too weak...
You should target some of the i5 or i7 first generations, they're not that expensive anymore. -
He has the price listed for $500 Firm
But, he wants to trade it for my alienware m11x r2 with a notebook belkin cooler and a alienware neopreene sleeve.
Edit: He said he will also throw in the ROG mouse that came with it. -
I'm pretty sure that this notebook isn't the right choice, if you want to enjoy the newest games on it's max settings..
You'll need at least a Geforce GTX 660M/Radeon 6970M
and a i7 (first gen is enough)
edit: the price for the asus book is OK, but only cuz the secondary components are pretty good. -
) have cool lights and everything. I know how childish it sounds buy I absolutely love the lights on my alienware and on the Asus g71gx
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Note the asus cant upgrade the graphics card (asus solder the chip or use a non standard shape or reverse the connector.
-
I could check later, have to go to work now
Meaker is right, nothin upgradable...
Like I said, the GX740 is a beast -
$550 won't get yourself too far, I really suspect that you would be able to get any machine that features an mxm slot for upgradability, and really if your looking for cool lights together with performance it costs nearly double your budget, forget about the lights, look for another 1st gen gaming ones and try to see if it is capable of fitting in the newer MXM cards. I would personally keep the money tho and wait for the release of haswell notebooks, by that time the sandy bridge notebooks might drop their price a bit further and your budget will be more flexible.(NB. I do understand it sucks not being able to play DX11 only games ie crysis 3 but I'm sure you can still bare with it) And honestly even if the budget went down on a rig it won't go too far as well, given the balance needed between CPU and GPU

Slapping a 7970m card in yours is going to give you the best bang for the buck really.
-
at the most I can get him to come down to to 550. Plus I'm not the best with computers so upgrading it would be as scary as an open heart surgery, but i'm not too worried with that I'm sure there are some wonderful guides or I could find someone to do.
As for the Asus laptop you guys are rights it cant be upgraded or anything it is not worth the upgrade at all.
As for waiting for the release for the haswell notebooks. I probably won't be able to wait thqat long knowing my self plus my first year of university just finished so I really want to get back into gaming,
The 7970m card sounds amazing, so just a couple of questions.
1) Could I get that gx740 and then upgrade it to a 7970m card without issues? and if there is something specific i'd have to do (update bios?) what would it have to be?
2) How about Clevo/Eurocom w860cu ? I found someone selling it for around 500 in the marketplace. Would I be able to upgrade that thing up? It fits my price range -
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sag...0cu-hd-7970m-7950m-upgrade-am-i-crazy-12.html i think so, perhaps others can assist you in getting the correct bios version and the vbios for it, however the heatsink might need modifications with thermal pads, just search for w860cu teardown and you'll be able to complete the ''heart surgery'' easily
-
When you're going to buy that GX740, you just need a 7970M CLEVO P150!!!!!HM(important)!!!!! version, plug and play and you're ready to game on
I did that to my gx740LOVE IT <3
edit: it's important to buy the HM version because the other versions only work in enduro on models (enduro is a built in graphics solution "switch")
damn! sorry for my language (i'm german) -
-
-
i suppose the failure rate of bios/vbios flashing is so tiny yet deadly.... do you have to do it by blind flashing?
-
yes but it was easy, i used a guide hier at notebookreview to be completely sure
-
correct me if I'm wrong, but I do think out of all forum notebookreview does kinda an excellent job from purchase consultancy to detailed OS troubleshooting/ optimisation and even a no-handling fee 2nd hand parts selling platform, I get most of my troubles solved just by surfing on this database
-
msi gx740 is the best yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
this is my gx740
cor i7 740qm
ati 7970
16gig ram 1600
1t 7200prm
it so powerfull -
....
like I said -
Also gotta make sure it is HM version.
Yea the notebook reviews is an amazing place I've been using this site for a lot i just never bothered to make an account. Thanks everyone!!
LOL glad you both love it so much if it was just a bit cheaper for me to get it i'd have it too -
gx740 support 1333 mhz freg. of mem. !ONLY!
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Yes that's because of the CPU.
-
I would like to see the temperatures of the CPU and GPU while playing and at least after half hour, assuming that you have the (1 gen) i7-9XX xm series and amd 7970m.
The most important thing is the back cover of notebook must be closed, not open with cooling pad equipped with 6 fans.
Get restart?
-
Can GX740 use core i7 920/40xm? Then you would have real ultimate power
-
yay a chinese link, just look at the photos, impressive? wonder who would doit to theirs on a 17 incher -
Hey guys i managed to get the gx 740!! just a quick question regarding the battery. Is it possible to over charge the battery? Like when i'm using the laptop and it is at 100% with the charger plugged in should i take the battery out? Thanks BTW LOVING THIS THING ITS A FREGGIN BEAST!
-
here a screenshot of my system
Back cover is CLOSED and my Notebook is always on my knees(i drilled a few holes in the back over the gpu)
And I added a few mini RAM cooler on my heatpipe, believe it or not
Everything is fine
-
Very nice machine mate
I couldn't upgrade to HD7970m before I sold my GX660r, but I was just going that route.
Enjoy! -
Thank you! I love it
If I could, I'd prefer your machine ;D
But the HD7970M is a MONSTER -
1) It was heating up like crazy after 30 min of cod 4 on max settings it over heated. I solved it by updated the firmaware, vbios and bios and now my GPU still diles at 60 but after running cod 4 on max it was 88 for about an hour (also opened up laptop and cleaned fans.
Now I have two questions.
1) Before I updated the vbios and bios I was getting 60+ frames always while playing cod 4, now it seems all jumpy and goes around the 40 mark at times.
2) Last night i was running zelda windwaker with 3x native resolution and was getting 30 frames constant. Today I started it up and i'm getting 20 at the most.
Any idea as to what might be going on? I have the i5 with 5870. Also the laptop is on the gaming mode setting.
edit: Also running the graphic drivers supplied by MSI and I ran dolphin emulator last night after I updated the vbios, bios, and firmware. Thanks agaIN -
Try to update your gpu drivers to the new catalyst mobile drivers (13.2 is my version nr)
My 5870 had a little heat prob as well. 90° is a "normal" temperatur with that gpu
But I never had to upgrade my vbios -
-
Edit: to you temperature prob: try to lay something under the back of you notebook, a purse or something else, so the fan "air entry hole" is free... Brought me -6° -
just gta 4 :/ would you by chance have an over clocking guide for my i5? I want to be able to run dolphin emulator at 100% speed and maybe get GTA 4 running
EDIT: i saw someone do a benchmark on youtube with the same laptop maybe they had an i7 but they were getting 40 on max settings -
The difference between i5 and i7 is huge... I think it's a i7 I've got only 56 frames on GTA4 so don't bother
Overclocking a i5 is not easy.. you can only raise the FSB - which often causes instability of your system -
GTA4 is poorly optimized and cries for quad cores with very high clockspeeds to trully shine. It's a bad port.
-
looks like ill be keeping my xbox for gta
just wondering i do have quite some cash laying around if i was to upgrade this to an i7 pcoessor which one should it be? I found a i7 3770K for 280 and the following:
i7 2600--brand new oem,asking 200
i7 2600S--brand new oem,asking 180
Thanks everyone!
