I'm looking to get myself a laptop for moderate gaming for now and some 3D artwork as a hobbyist for later. Right now these two laptops and the ASUS N80Vn-X1 (also on newegg) are my picks to pick from.
Before I even weigh in the pros and cons of Intel vs AMD, not-portable size vs somewhat portable size, screen resolution, graphics card etc, can someone answer this question please ? I take it that a few people who visit this section of the forum own MSI laptops, would know first hand about the build quality and reliability of MSI's notebooks and a few of those may have some experience with MSI's customer service.
Firstly, how is build quality and reliability of MSI's laptops in your opinion ?
Secondly, how is MSI's customer service when things do go wrong ?
Please save someone from wasting $700-900 in this bad economy and help me out with these questions. If the quality of MSI's laptops or their customer service is not up to par, I'm going to go with an Asus. Asus's NA and Asia customer service at least is supposed to be very good.
Thank you for your input. =)

Well, the only MSI notebook I've come into contact with was a MSI Wind. Which had pretty good build quality, didn't get too hot, and a comfortable keyboard - for a netbook anyway. Sorry, I don't know about their other lines though.

Hello lavnya,
The GX700/600 series are on the earlier models, while GX730/630 are the newer batch, and more stable.
While the majority of 700 users don't have problem with them, some of the 600 users have bad experience with them, you can take a look at page 2 to 5 of this subforum to find out more.
It really boils down to if you are going to use this for heavy gaming, or not. As the 700's GPU is less superior than the 630, however the 17" screen would be better for watching DVD, and your routine work(WSXGA+)
Also if you are not gaming, then the overheating troubles posted by other users, would be less of a worry for you in this case. -
im gonna buy that lappy in about 6 days, so Ill be posting some nice pics, and info, asap
in anycase, im gonna buy a cooling pad to prevent if it, indeed, overheats. -
Hrm, won't the benefits of a 2.4 C2D outweigh the bad video card?
Basically, my questions is this: which offers better performance? -
Depends on where you need performance.
For gaming depends on which quality you like to play at, the GX630 should be better, especially for MMOs and RPGs. The bottleneck is games is usually the GPU. This holds except for RTS games, where CPU power can make a noticeable difference to playability (case in point: supreme commander)
For 3D design, the GX700 should win the day, with a higher resolution and much better processor. 1280X800 resolution on the GX630 may be acceptable for a casual hobbyist, likely not for a student or professional of 3D design.
Of course, you can do better for both with several options for higher cost. -
with regards to stability, how stable is the GX700? Battery wise, how good is it? Compared to Dell and HP laptops, how durable is this? I am also planning to buy this lappy because it's a pretty good deal. What do you guys think?
-
hey guys, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have got this laptop. However, I felt it was refurbished because the package has obviously been opened before and the mouse is dirty and all other stuffs are with their separate packages opened. My question is whether I should ask Newegg to clarify this.
Additionally, the woofer amplifies the sound on left side. and the front two speakers never work if there are two. -
you SHOULD ask Newegg to clarify it!
OBVIOUSlY!
And ask for refund because the speakers dont work -
- 70GB less HD space
- no Memory card reader (or lack of confirmation of one)
- T8100 CPU (vs T8300)
- no fun pack (ie backpack, mouse, headphones, etc) known w/o pic
(I ordered N82E16834152082 and pick it up tonight. Sure hope it is all I am expecting!) -

Got my GX700 last night. Woot!
Seriously -- so worth more than $699
I had worries that it was a refurb -- nope, 100% new.
So new in fact, that I left that protective vinyl layer over the piano black cover. I am also overly impressed with the sound this thing has. For a mere laptop, having 4.1 sound is fun. I use my own laser mouse and headphones, but this came with them too, as well as a Vista DVD (rather than HD backup).
Any questions, toss my way. But I am VERY happy. -
In the MSI GX600 Review (newsID 4094 here on notebookreview.com), Kevin O'Brien says
) of RAM in it instead of the 3GB that it comes with.
-
It should be alright. MSI is fairly forgiving when it comes to tearing the warranty sticker, as long as you're just upgrading the RAM or hard drive and they're not the cause of the problem when you send it in for warranty. Removing the heatsink and/or tampering with the CPU or video card on the other hand, gets you a slap on the wrist.
-
Changing RAM is not an issue. But adding RAM to go from 3GB to 4GB seems a waste of cash. If it were from 2GB to 3GB, okay, but 3GB is fine. -
:GEEK: -
2) If you are using Windows with 64-bit technology, then I can see your 4GB RAM upgrade as viable. This unit comes with only 32-bit technology, making 4GB RAM a waste of cash, imo.

Man, do you have a manual with the package?Do you feel there are 4 speakers plus one woofer? have you tried the Realteck HD Audio Manager? when you test the speaker configuration, will the front speakers work as well? I want to make sure my gx700 is normal.
BTW, Newegg has kindly sent me an email for replacement. But I am afraid it will take a long time since the model with T8300 is out of stock. And I won't absolutely downgrade to T8100.

Thanks. -
I've had the GX630 for a few days now. I got it on Newegg before the price went up to $849. It's really a solid build computer. The processor is not bad at all. In fact in Windows Experience it rates it at 5.0 when the turbo is on. 4.8 when not. It's quiet. It doesn't get hot, even when I play Battlefield 2142 with all settings on max, and 2x AA. Plays videos great too. I should tell you though, I installed Vista 64 on it right when I took it out of the box. MSI driver suport is awesome. Everything works great on it. I am super impressed with this laptop.
-
A few people have mentioned that this laptop comes with the actual vista DVD and they were able to install the 64 bit version of vista. I recently purchased the laptop from newegg, but did not get the actual Vista DVD. I did get a recovery DVD, but I do not see any options to install vista 64. Can someone please confirm whether it is possible to actually install vista 64 with the recovery DVD.... and if so, how is this done?
-
It comes with Vista x86 on the partition. AFAIK, there was no OS disc. You have to have your own copy of Vista x64.
