    Hi there fellows
I'm the owner of a GX660R-064. The GPU is a mobilty Radeon HD 5870.
I played around with the overcloaking a few months ago in the catalyst software that goes with the drivers, and now, when i play a game, i get really incredible temperature mesures.
Now i have the GPU set on the default factory settings.
With only a couple applications opened, i get around 70~75 degres, and depending on the game i'm running, it can go as high as 95 degres, or even be so hot that my laptop automatically shuts down.

My question is: is there a way to know by myself if my GPU is permanently or definitely damaged? should i just put some cooling paste on the GPU?
Am i screwed and need to change the GPU? (it seems that the MSI GX660R-064 allows GPU upgrade)

    Thanks!

Sounds like you might need to repaste with some good thermal paste: ICD7 and blow out some dust with an air can... Maybe even replace the thermal pads/add some more in.

    Thanks for your reply Geo.
Would you happened to know a good site where i could get easy-to-follow-instructions about how to repaste, which paste to get, how to replace the thermal pads etc?
I know about computers when it comes to internet, and windows, but when it comes down to hardware, i'm a complete newbie!

Check out the first 5 or 6 pics here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/622217-msi-gx660-updated-6990m.html That'll tell you how to get to your GPU and take off your GPU heatsink.

For thermal paste I suggest IC Diamond 7 which you can get from eBay/FrozenCPU (It keeps my 6990M cool in my GX660R...)

As far as repasting is concerned there's plenty of guides around, I just can't seem to find any atm... all I did was just put a pea-sized amount of ICD7 on the core then put the heatsink back on.

Before respasting... do you clean your laptop? dust is the main culprit for high temps. Clean your fan properly and use a can of compressed air to clean it good.

Repasting works wonders but if you have a firty fan it wont help much if at all.
