My brother has a MSI GX660R notbook with a dvd writer installed. How easy is it to upgrade to a blu-ray player/dvd writer. Has anyone got a guide on this and will this void the warranty.

I don't know about the warranty but upgrading the DVD drive is very easy. There is one screw on the back of the laptop to unscrew and then the DVD drive will slide out. There's a small bracket on the back of the DVD drive which you need to unscrew and put on the back of the new DVD drive. Put the bezel on the new drive and refit. Job done.

So the screw is on the outside not under a cover.

Is there some standard for laptop drives? I mean, do all drives fit? Is the bezel the plastic piece? Will the bezel fit all drives? Is the drive opening button a part of the drive or the bezel? How can I be sure everything will work out? What's a good bluray drive to buy? Who's gonna reply to every question?

Yes there is a standard height for laptop drives, either 12.7mm or 9.5mm. Well actually.... that's not completely true but it is for all MSI notebooks since they use generic parts and not crazy proprietary stuff (makes it easier for upgraders). The button is apart of the drive itself but can normally be easily removed and moved to another drive of the same dimensions for a flush fit. You can't be sure everything will work out, there are no certaintys in life except for death and taxes. Most bluray players are about the same. There's 4x vs 6x vs 8x but that just ends up being a question of how fast you "need" it to be. You should be able to find a good bluray drive from around 65-85 on the marketplace. I will answer questions when I have time but class starts tomorrow so I won't be checking the forum as often.
