So the posted memory type on retailer sites state that it is GDDR3, but in the review below:
http://translate.google.com/transla...50/4/&prev=_t&rurl=translate.google.com&twu=1
There is a GPU-Z screen showing 1GB GDDR5 memory with a 3DMark06 at 1280 x 1024 at over 12000... So, question is, what actually is the memory type?
-
Order one and when it gets delivered let us know.
-
-
The model tested in the Thai review had a faster processor and the DDR5. The ones you buy here will have a slower processor and DDR3. You will be able to upgrade the processor but I don't think you'll be able to upgrade the VRAM.
-
As far as im aware it was going to be 5850 DDR3, but if its DDR5 then love for that machine.
-
Will the memory have a major impact if one only plans on gaming at say 720p?
-
With the 128bit bus, it'l be crippled a fair bit,
To be honest though, it'd make more sense if they had GDDR5, but only time will tell. -
on 720p it shouldn't be a problem seeing as that's a relatively low resolution, but I'm also pretty bummed that MSI chose the DDR3 route again >.<

Here you go. It's at the bottom of page 3. 200 F not 200 C.

The review unit could be a pre-production model.
Before the All Powerful M17x launched last June there was an engineering sample unit spotted around Asia packing an ATI Mob. HD4870 with GDDR5. -
So when's the ETA for these units?
Also, does anyone know about the warranty service for MSI notebooks in Canada? -
-
I noticed that other reviews of notebooks did not include the temperature chart, just the gx640. I was thinking about purchasing this laptop, should I be worried about the overheating GPU? are there any easy solutions to this?
-
'
-
The specification chart on the first page also mentions DDR3. -
System RAM is not the RAM on the GPU.
-
-
However, that review model would have had GDDR5,
i've never known GPU-Z to read bios levels wrong,
The real question is, does the actual model hold 5 or 3, and if its 3, shame on MSI. -
Extentions vary alot on region i believe, gt725 had 210 uk and 212 us for quad varients,
We need someone with the unit or some more units to be honest, it'd be a shame if the card will turn out gddr3 though.
-
Is there a way to get a Gddr5 card instead of a Gddr3 ?
-
Isn't where a shop who changes the card ? (It would be also cheaper)
(sorry for my bad english, I'm not native speaker) -
You will need more than luck to get your hands on one , let alone if it's compatible with your mobo. -
Edit:
MSI Europe released a press report stating that both the GX640 and 740 are equipped with GDDR5.
http://emailmarketing.msi.eu/display.php?List=34&N=232 -
Yeah but in europe it will cost 1200 ... It's far more expensive than US model
-
Yes, I read about the 1200 and 1250 price indications. The 50 Euro difference seems unlikely. However, isn't that usual for laptops though, almost direct Dollar/Euro conversions?
-
Yeah They think Europe is full of money or what?
I hope it will be sold In US, then I will buy one in ebay or another store.
This is just what I needed at a good price. I hope it's Gddr5, if not I will have to keep searching -
US always gets stuff cheap, so i'd expect GDDR5 in EU and US to be honest,
-
I'm still classing it as unknown for now, regardless of website conditioning, the EU Press release as well as the first review out for the machine was definately GDDR5,
If MSI had issues with temps being too high it would be dropped to GDDR3, (They were fairly hot,)
Do shops actually have the book in stock, or are they accepting purchase? -
Hmm, if there accepting preorders, then Xotic won't know either, then we will have to rely on coms between MSI and Xo,
I just don't see why they would change it, would make no sense, unless it was really too hot, i suppose the 9800gts or gt was probably best for this little machine, -
Really, i have an old sony vaio fe21s, granted expensive and not the best value for money, but that screen is beaut lol, i could sit there and stare at it, even if it was completely broke haha,
Apple, yep i mean look at the iPAD lol
It is indeed looking more and more like GDDR3, need to find someone in the UK with it, -
Agreed with the Apple & Vaio rant. Some overpriced crap .. Loved my sonyericsson though even with the buggy symbian interface , at least it's plug n play ...
-
Haha no problem, we all have problems with things, we all vent in MSI subsection lol.
-
Here's the UK press release as well:
http://uk.msi.com/news.php?news_no=17 -
GDDR5 again :S any US press comments?
-
Haven't found any yet.
Though, perhaps the current price difference (1200 vs $1159) can be explained by the discrepancy in GDDR? -
I dont believe so, US always has best prices by comparison lol.
-
1200 = 1800$
:x that's too much for me ... -
Gddr5 graphics, 1 USB 3.0 port and core i5-520 minimum.I would buy this laptop instantly.
Even though we will get gddr5 in the UK and EU there is no reseller that can upgrade CPU without voiding the warranty. -
http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=3213131&blogid=18
"The GX740 features with the ATI Radeon HD5870 graphics card while the GX640 features the HD5850 model. Both cards have 1GB of GDDR5 graphics memory, which MSI says it chose for its excellent visuals and relatively low power consumption."
also: "The GX740 and GX640 are priced from £999 will be available from March."
Wonder if this has any bearing on what we'll get in the US? -
Well to be honest, i wouldn't believe it if MSI did give EU blah blah GDDR5 and US GDDR3, because that would be the daftest move a company could make, dafter then the ipad...lol
-
Not sure how accurate this is, but Tweakers.net states it will be equiped with an Intel Core i5 540M.
http://tweakers.net/pricewatch/253529/msi-gx640.html#tab:info -
-
Fairly certain near enough all new boards run on DDR3?
Would be quite funny though, -
i5 with DDR2 ? no chance. Has to be a mistake.
-
Agreed, we can only hope hey sprint, i suppose the more the merrier at the end of the day haha.
-
I found a different model here: http://www.edbpriser.dk/Product/Details.aspx?pid=779745, the GX640-086NE (NE = Northern European, I assume, this model is being sold only on danish/swedish/norwegian sites as far as I've seen). If you click on the specifications, you can see
Videohukommelse
Video Hukommelse 1 GB
Ram type DDR3 SDRAM
I assume this refers to the memory on the GPU, which would be quite interesting - DDR3 SDRAM is distinctly different from GDDR3 or GDDR5, but I am not sure how the performance compares. Looking up the info on the mobile 5850 on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compar...ocessing_units#Evergreen_.28HD_5xxx.29_series DDR3 appears as one of the possible bus types, so it is possible that this is another variation from the US we've seen and the EU that's been announced.
EDIT: I'd written "The price in kr converted to USD comes to ~$1150, which is quite close to the price we're seeing for the US model on resellers. " I was using the conversion for the swedish kronor - but that is a denmark seller so they clearly use the denmark kroner, and when converted to USD that's ~$1500, closer to the other european prices we've seen (ie 999 british pounds). -
hey guys, do you have any information on how much this graphics card would score in 3dmark. and how big would be the difference between gddr3 vs gddr5 memory?
