    Greetings NBR Members,

I'm in the process of custom fabricating a heatsink for an MSI 1080 SLI to put into an Alienware M17X R4. I plan on using the fin assembly from an M17X R4 heatsink, sourcing individual heatpipes from online stores, and combining them with a heatplate from an MSI GT83VR 1080 SLI. In essence, the plan in picture from is as follows:
    s-l1600.jpg + custom_heat_pipe.jpg + MSI-GT83VR-Disassembly-28.jpg = a custom heatsink that goes onto this 1080: 1080 msi 2.png

Now, I'm having trouble finding part numbers for the MSI GT83VR SLI. Does anyone know the part number for either the left or right 1080 heatsink from the GT83VR SLI? If I can't source anywhere to buy this heatsink, I'll have to get one custom made. Would any MSI GT83VR SLI owners with MSI 1080s be willing to give me detailed dimensions of their heatsink? Specifically the heatplate itself? I would then go off to model it in CAD to send off to a milling machine service. I've noticed that if this heatsink was completely un-soldered, then the copper plate that makes contact with the gpu die will be its own separate entity (aka not attached to the heatplate). I was thinking of using the die plate from an MSI GT80S CPU Heatsink:

I'm open to any other parts that you guys might know of, so let me know if you have any other suggestions!

Hopefully someone that has the parts can provide you with the part number. I will keep an eye out for you also as this is the type of mod I usually would do too. Good luck.

@Rengsey R. H. Jr. Thanks for keeping an eye out for me. I appreciate it.
@Lumlx Thanks for the part numbers! I did some searching myself with those numbers, but didn't find anything myself even after truncating some to the digits. However, you got me thinking for some reason to try Taobao and bam! Got 'em: MSI GT83VR 1080 Heatsink & MSI GT83VR 1070 Heatsink (1070 just for kicks) for $43 USD each. I also found the heat pipes from an MSI GT72VR that look like they'll be the perfect candidate for my custom heatsink. Do you guys know of other websites to get heatpipes from?

    Aliexpress has loads of heatpipes.

The 6mm diameter round ones are really easy to shape and one store I used recently had lengths in 10/15/20/25/30cm. They are soft enough to shape by hand and flatten with a vice (but for cleaner bends and to avoid kinks on larger bends I use a copper pipe bender, also on aliexpress)

How much was the heat sinks shipped? Where do you reside?

I wasn't brave enough this time around to order round ones and use a tool to bend and flatten them for this project. I just wanted to find something that I could un-solder from a sacrificial heatsink and resolder to my custom one. In the future I'll be experimenting with this route. Do you have a picture of a copper pipe bender that I should look for when that time comes so that I buy the right one? I imagine it will be smaller than a pipe bender used for plumbing.

Buying things on Taobao is a little different. More often than not, you buy the item from the seller and it gets shipped from the city to the International Distribution Center (IDC). Once it arrives (couple days) I'll get a quote from the IDC on how much it's going to cost to ship overseas based on the item's dimensions and weight. I live in the USA. Once I get a quote on shipping, I'll let you know what that will be and break down all the costs and final cost.

@Jordanator88 , When are you planning to get the card or the heat sink?

Hey @Rengsey R. H. Jr. , I actually already purchased the card back in December. The heatsink I bought the day I posted about finding it on Taobao. I also went ahead and purchased that GT72VR for the heat pipes.

Nice .... Do you have a picture of the card? I am wondering if that card would fit a GT80S

I would definitely try to install that card if I can find a really cheap used one.

@Jordanator88 if the mod dont work out , I’ll be happy to get it off your hand. ;)

Yea sorry about that. I just had my car break down last week so my time's been held up there. The basic item cost breakdown for buying something from Taobao (I'll use my purchase as an example) is as follows: Original Item Cost (268 yuan) + Fees [can include taxes and credit card fee] (20 yuan) + Shipping to IDC (free) + Shipping to your doorstep (105 yuan). In total this heat sink cost 393 yuan ($58.56 USD).

The heat sink from the GT72VR came in. I don't think the heat pipes will work. They seem just a tad too short. I might just end up making my own based on the tool that bennyg suggested. Estimated time frame for completing this project will really just be based on shipping items from China, so bare with me guys.

That's good to hear. You'll definitely get first dibs. I'll be posting more on the first thread I started about the 1080 in the M17X R4 once I get this heatsink put together. Come to think of it, the only think that I still need to get are thermal pads for the MSI 1080 SLI. What thicknesses do I need to get? I just need some basic ones for now because I plan on buying the 17W/mk Fujipoly ones later.

@Rengsey R. H. Jr. Would you happen to know what thermal pad sizes I need to get for the MSI 1080? The heat sink arrived in the USA on March 16th, so it should arrive to my address fairly soon.

Get 1mm 0.5mm and maybe 1.5mm but worst case you can stack 1mm with 0.5 mm

    Worst case just overlap them.

    Follow what @Lumlx said.

Also , you mentioned that you ordered a GTX 1070 Heat Sink too? If you will not be using it , let me know. I’m looking for one for a project that I want to do to a GT83VR.

I want to install a full blown GTX 1080 in the GT83VR.

So all my parts finally came in. I think the heatsink got held up in customs. I have the heat pipes too :)
@Rengsey R. H. Jr. If the MSI GTX 1080 mod does not work out for me, I will include what's left of the 1080 heat plate. For my purposes I have to cut off two mounting brackets.
