You're right... it is a pretty sweet deal. I looked at some youtube videos to see how the graphics card could hold up to demanding games like Crysis and the game runs pretty smooth with practically all settings at high...

Whats the quality like on MSI machines? I am considering the GT735 as a somewhat outsider right now, mainly because I have no clue about the brand. I wish it had to HD bays and thats actually the only disadvantage it has over Asus G71V and Acer 8930G, but any info regarding overall quality, noise and keyboard would be most welcome.

I don't know guys - this thing fails against the 9700m GTS.

For the same money you can have a 9800m in the Gateway 7811FX or the Asus G50Vt-X1.

The G50Vt-X1 maybe has a better GPU. The only thing secure is that the Intel CPU is better than the AMD CPU in the MSI.

But the MSI is 17" has bigger resolution and 4 speakers/1subwoofer. I believe is better to compare this model with other 17".

This is truly going to be an awsome laptop. I called MSI To get some details on it today. There are a few miss information floating around on this so I will give in detail my conversation with MSI Tech support and marketting.

Does this laptop offer 1080P HD Support?
Response: It does Via the HDMI Connection but the display itself is 1680x1050 resolution and only supports 720P.

Does this laptop have 512mb GDDR2 or GDDR3 memory on the Radeon M HD3850?
Response: It has 512mb GDDR3 256 bit memory clocked at 1500 MHZ effective

Does the DVD Drive support blueray disk?
Response: No it however supports HD DVD altho it is hard to come by these days.

Is the 4 speakers and subwofer 5.1 capable?
Response: No, the speakers are only usuable in a 2.1 configuration with the top and bottom speakers sending sound via front channels only.

Is this laptop part of the new AMD Puma Platform for laptops?
Response: yes it is altho it does not support an upgradeable GPU or XGPU (external)

When is this laptop scheduled for release?
Response: Plan is for mid november altho it may be pushed back to right before Christmas.

Those are a few of the questions I asked before I placed my order online at Amazon.com
This laptop is plenty capable and indeed is faster than a laptop with the 9700M GT Video card. The only reason benchmarks show the HD3850M chip as slower is because the CPU benched with the 9700M GT Laptops are intel based at 2.53ghz, This laptop will have cpu upgrade options as soon as the AMD Puma lineup finishes its release and will be able to expand to around 2.6ghz.

I hope this helps anyone else looking to get 1. I will update this when mine gets in.

Cheeseman, the GT735 are only available at preorder on Amazon... but I suppose it will be on stock soon!!

I bought this MSI because I get tired of HP declined orders hehe, I hope I get it soon. Maybe at Wednesday... The only bad thing is the lack of Turion ZM-86... but I need a good notebook soon... so the ZM-82 is well for me!

Anybody Knows if runs vista 32 or 64? ATi PowerPlay and ATi Switchable graphics tecnologies are supported on GT735?

As soon I get and tested my Notebook I'll post my impressions :)

    Good Bye!

Could always go with the 15.4" GX630 and GX620 series. The GX630 has pretty much the same hardware as the GT735 except it comes with a Geforce 9600M GT DDR3 while the GX620 comes with Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4GHz + Geforce 9600M GT DDR3.

Bare in mind the 3850 in the GT735 if is a far more advanced and future proof card compared to the rather mediocre 9600m. If a buyer wants higher gaming performance the GT735 is the way to go!

It comes with Vista 32 bit but 64 bit drivers will be on MSI website. they do not however support the 64 bit drivers so you are on your own there.

ATi Power play and Ati switch are featured. you can switch between the dedicated card and the IGP without having to restart.

Amazon.com has it on there site for pre order ONLY

Release date is mid November to mid December.

All my information is Direct from MSI

    hope it helps

The CPU is not the best, but Ati in this moment looks safer than a Nvidia. I was reading in the Toshiba section someone with high temperatures in his Qsmio (with Nvidia Card).

Darksylum that said the support guy about the speakers. The speakers are 2.1 not 4.1. Wait a minute. But the info in the MSI page said this:

    http://global.msi.com.tw/index.php?func=proddesc&maincat_no=135&cat2_no=&cat3_no=&prod_no=1517

Can you confirm all of this when you get your laptop? About the speakers and vista? Some benchmarks in turbo mode would be nice aswell. :D
Mine will be bought of eBay this week, but I live in the uk so it won't arrive for ages. ^_^

I have the (dutch version of the) laptop for one week now. I'll see if I can post some benchmarks.

There are indeed 5 speakers, but it works just like a 2.1 system. (so no surround sound)

Bah! Crappy AMD attempt at a CPU again... wish that they'd hire some engineers that had a clue... (AMD needs to star dividing by 2000 for their new model numbers...)

    [EDIT]
No fanboyism here (not sure how it is yet inthese forums), but my desktop is an AMD, but I clearly recognize that they have SIGNIFICANTLY have lagged Intel now for the last 2y and really have no one to svae them ATM (ever?).. I almost feel sorry for the stockholders fromt heir failed attempt at dominance... (lack of cash hurts...)

@cutterjohn, I don't think we like fanboyism here, so I wouldn't to be on the safe side! And isn't this AMDs new Puma platform? I'd heard alright things about it... Guess we'll have to wait and see if the CPU holds up or not!

I'm really happy with my notebook. I'm downloading 3dmark06 (almost finished) and will run it in a second. Any other benchmarks you want?

The notebook is pretty much the same as the gx720. (there is a good review about it at laptopmag, but I'm not allowed to post urls yet :( ) A lot of goodies were included with the notebook (backpack, rainbox six vegas 2, gaming headset, gaming mouse).

    Also:
    - You can hear the fan a little when you're doing nothing. Not annoying, but more than my other laptop. When you play game the fan goes louder but it keeps the laptop really cool.
    - The speakers are really good.
    - You get a clean vista install in comparisation with other laptops... Only the webcam program, noton antivirus and Microsoft work are in my opinion useless. WinDVD is also included (I have a bluray driver)

My only problem is that AMD is still getting crushed in benchmarks, has had to result to FCC complaints against Intel for theoretical monopoly practices, AND that they have ALWAYS had a poor history with mobile CPU designs.

OTOH my desk is a socket 939 4800+/2GB Mushkin (4x512 should go to 3 or more GB... but DDR is a dead end now)/eVGA 7600GT KO (need to upgrade) and still runs everything like a champ barring the GPU.

Just priced out CUSTOM NOTEBOOK, MSI MS-1721 (GT735) Turion™ X2 Ultra Performance Notebook, 17" WSXGA+ TFT LCD, ATI® Radeon™ HD 3650 512MB Graphics from Avadirect, upping the base CPU to the 2.3GHz TL-66, 2GB Kingston 800MHz CL5 (hopefully its 1x2 for later upgrading), 320GB WD 5400RPM sata2, b/g/n wireless (never heard of these but only one supported n) for c. $1280. No OS. Off to find benchmarks on these newer AMD mobile CPUs as I've also quoted an MSI 1651 build from them with 4GB/P8600 but o.w. about the same for c. $1150 shipped. (The 9600M GT appears to be the MXM type of card, but no idea yet whether it'll be likely that it can ever be swapped out for an upgrade... need more research for this too.)

Found some matlab benchmarks for the AMD listed above, and it's by FAR anchoring the bottom rung. Doesn't seem to be worth it for the 3850 with such a weak CPU, off to check the other possible CPUs for fitting in place. (I'd post a nice link to the benches, but I can't yet, so here's the mangled part:
    www-math.cudenver.edu/~jmandel/matlab/matlab_benchmark.html

    [EDIT]
Looks like the ZM-82 or better would be what you'd want in here, so the avadirect config is junk IMO. A similarly priced one turns up on Amazon with the ZM-82/4GB RAM moving on to locating info on the ZM-82...

I see where your coming from with whether it's worth the money for the 3850, or will the CPU bottleneck to such a great extent it's not worth it? Would it be possible to upgrade to an intel processor (p8600 for example) on the amd chipset? It would also be helpful if an owner could post pictures of the internals to see if the 3850 is integrated into the mainboard or whether it's a seperate part that would allow an upgrade in the future. Thanks

Persoontje, sorry i missed your post!
thanks alot for your overall impression of the laptop, greatly appreciated :D
and 3dmark06 is fine for me thanks, im not a massive believer in benchmarks, its just to give me a rough idea. :p
cani ask where you ordered your laptop from to get so many freebies? amazon only specify the backpack, it would be nice to get the rest though!
thanks (p.s i repped you for giving us info on a rarely owned laptop xD)

persoontje could you download cpu-z and check what is the processors speed with turbo-mode on? And could you run seperatily 3dMark06 when turbo mode is turned off and on? It would be great because then we could see the affect of turbomode.

And can you sometime when you have time make a review of this laptop. I am very interested in this, but still I cant deside which laptop i will buy, ASUS G50V(with 2,4Ghz CPU) or this MSI.

NO. The socket configuration are mechanically AND electrically incompatible, not to mention the BIOS.

Didn't turn up any really useful CPU benches, but AMD has apparently admitted that performancewise it's still pretty far behind Intel, adding this to the benchmarks for the 3850 on notebookcheck it's not looking to be a very good buy... but we'll see when someone actually gets one as maybe it had some driver problems when the notebookcheck entries were made...

ok, apologies for my blonde moment there... :p
Yeah, I turned up notebookchecks bench aswell, but they have proved in the past to not he the most reliable of websites.
Is it true that the mobility 3850 is pretty similar to the desktop version? I know the mobility will never be as fast as the desktop, but are they techniqually similar?
I've always had my eye on this from day of announcement, hoping it would be within my budget and be able to max my RTS collection and occasional FPS, still hoping it will because it really won me over!
Persoontje is hopefully going to provide some benchmarks soon, so we'll find out then!
Also I believe it was dallago who was scheduled to recieve his tomorrow, (GMT 29th October) so we will have two points of view/hopefully two sets of benchmarks to work with.
    Thanks

Persoontje, thanks a lot for your impressions! All of the tweaks are great! can you take a pic to the mouse and headset? I hope mine come with all of the tweaks.

What about disks? which comes? Recovery is on Disks or in a HDD partition?

    Thanks a lot to you!

@ cutterjohn, please don't fight against AMD, they do their best! but Intel have more money... Anyways AMD has a good quality and good processors... When Deneb FX arrives I thought that will be great core...

And don't forget the new foundry and the new factory. AMD + ATIC will be a great group! And Fusion :)

Yes, I noted that your desktop is AMD (leader age) based. And yes... AMD lost his power, but with the foundry AMD could get it again! with lower prices! :D

Remember, AMD GPUs are actually better than Nvidia GPUs!

    I believe on AMD!!

Tenspeed33, sure... I hope it arrives today. I want no delays :) then I'll test it a lot!

The Mobility HD3850 is pretty like Desktop. The core of the Desktop is faster, of course, but mobility gives a good clocks and the same specifications: GDDR3, 256bits, DX 10.1 and same 55 nm... Powerfull GPU!!

argg... I want the notebook

This model is selling for $1299 on Ebay from a couple of sellers and is also available for the same price at mwave.com. One of the sellers "FrostyComputers" actually can ship it internationally.

Zipzoomfly.com is selling it for $1287 but they're out of stock.

I have a really old AMD semrpon at 1.8ghz, and it's a little beast! I decided to keep it even after I bought my new (AMD/ATI) system, as it was brilliant!
But from my new system, I can sort of tell that the company are losing it a bit, but remember they made losses every quarter this year so far, I can't fault them for soldiering on!
I hope you recieve it today aswell! :D
I've got to wait a bit longer for mine due to account issues, so I'm a bit irritated about that; also I wonder if you get the extras? Where did you order from? Interesting to know which stores actually include them all.
    Keep us informed!
    Thanks

    3dmark06 (without turbo:6083 3dmarks)
    3dmark06 (with turbo: 6425 3dmarks)

notice only the cpu score increases a lot... you only overlock the CPU with the turbo button
The CPU runs according to cpu-z at 2,6 ghz when overlocked.

I live in the Netherlands, so I orderded it from a dutch shop (gt735-019nl)
My version has as 1680x1050 screen and a blueray drive.

    Freebies that I got:
    -- Gaming (laser) mouse
    -- Headset
-- Rainbox Six Vegas 2 (full version)
    -- lcd display wiper

@Dalago There is a driver&utilities cd included. You also get 2 empty dvd's to burn your own recovery dvd on (from the hdd)

I'm uploading screenshots of 3dmarks & cpu-z and some pictures now.
edit: pictures at: http picasaweb.google.com / didiercollard (I'm not allowed to post urls yet :( )

Wow, that HD 3850 is being held back by the CPU. 400 point increase is quite a bit of a jump just from overclocking the processor. My 20% turbo mode overclock only got me an extra ~150 points on 3DMark06.

ouch... That CPU really is bottlenecking! Could a driver update fix the CPU up a bit? That 3850 has alot of potential, could be overclocked safely due to the really good cooling system in the notebook?
It's only 1000 points more than the 9600m, and it has double the bus width...
Oh well, I'm still set on this! :D
Thanks alot for the benchmarks, greatly appreciated! And thanks for the info about freebies, the eBay auction I'm looking at says "includes all accessories" which hopefully means everything!

Any overclocking experts own this notebook? :p

Wow nice benchmarks! And Pictures! Thanks! :)

I want your Bluray drive hahaha... mine will come just with SuperMulti.

I hope mine comes with gaming mouse...
I suppose your GT735 came with 32bits... I use some CAD applications, so maybe I'll go to 64bits...

are your ram stick DDR2-800 or 667?

But... mine has not arrived yet... still on track... I don't think it arrives today... I don't know

I suppose I must wait one day more maybe two days if anything is wrong... :(

@Tenspeed32 No I'm not a real overclocker, but the notebook stays quite cool. (even when playing games...) So I think it can be overclocked :p

Memory is PC2-6400 (so DDR2-800, correct me if I'm wrong)

Just ran 3dmark06 again and got 6441 now :p
So 358 points extra with the turbo button

    sweet!
I think your right on the RAM front, sounds feasable!
Sorry to continuously bother you, but do you own cod4/crysis? I'd love to know what the 3850 can do in those games!
    Thanks :D
Oh, and does anyone know how many extra fps that 400 points translates to in cod and crysis roughly?

Nope don't own Cod4 neither Crysis, because my old laptop was way too slow for it :GEEK: But I might download them this week, cause I do like them :)

I just ran 3DMark Vantage (with turbo on, performance settings)
    GPU score: 1651
    CPU score: 3723
    3DMark score: P1918

they'r really good games, COD4s my favourite along side COH:OP :D
Nice, im trying to find a score boundary for 3dmark vantage because im not sure what the average result for gaming laptops is, could any1 shine a light on which boundary this laptop would be put in focusing on this benchmark and how it compares to other notebooks i.e, M50vt-x1?
    Thanks

FYI: The New Puma Turionx2 Ultra CPUs is the much long waited release of the originial AM2 CPU design for mobile with some slight upgrades. It features the AM2+ Quad core integrated memory controller. I do not see what they gaind by using this over the standard DDR2 800 memory control that the AM2 chips came with. It does have a nice little kick in performace tho with 2x 1mb L2 Cache. As I said, this is basicly a AM2 chip released in mobile form with DDR2 800 support and the upper end amount of L2 cache. It is still enough to push the HD 3850M and provide good gameplay while not having to rip your wallet open to buy an Intel chip based laptop. I am sorry, but you can fanboy all you want. AMD is still the practicle Price to performance chip in both desltop and laptop market.
