Hi,
I am looking at picked up an open box MSI GT72S Dominator Pro G Dragon - 070 (about $400 off retail) but I had a question regarding power consumption on the unit.
Since it only comes with a 230w vs 330w adapter, does it constantly drain the battery for power when running applications such as the Battlefield titles, Far Cry series, Assassin's Creed, etc. If so, how long would it take to drain the battery down to the 30% threshold where my understanding is that on the gt80s series performance starts to suffer. Will performance dip down to 980m levels at that point?
Also, isn't this battery drain bad for the lifetime health of the battery?
Thanks!

Hopefully someone with a GT72 can shed some light for this particular unit. GT80S with desktop 980 can run at full performance for about 6 hours before the battery is too drained.
Lifetime of the battery is not really that severely affected, as batteries also die from time alone unless you keep them at a very specific cold temp and charge. My GT60 old model has the battery drain and so far it has very minimal wear in several years of use.
I am inclined to believe that GT72 has less of an issue, since the GT80 is capped at 300w for 2 GPUs, while GT72 should be 230w for 1 GPU. -
Thanks Ryzeki. That is helpful. As a 40 year old with two kids, I never get 6 hour gaming sessions so it sounds like I probably would be okay if the gt72s hybrid power performance is like the gt80s.

hacktrix2006 Hold My Vodka, I going to kill my GPU
I myself gladly own a GT72-6QD abit with the Nvidia GTX970M 6GB however the hybrid power system is the same.
Now i have had the laptop now for 5 months and this laptop has seen some real long gaming sessions 4+ (Gaming Addict), however as i understand it the Hybrid power system has a battery level limit before it cuts out using the battery to keep the power requirements stable.
Now i have been told and its in a few forums that the MSI Hybrid Power system will stop using the battery when it reaches 90-95% full so your worry of the battery hitting 30% full shouldn't be an issue.
I myself play Battlefield 3 / 4 / Hardline and soon Battlefield One (EA hurry on this one will ya money burning a hole already). and my battery will go from 100% to about 98% after a 4+ hour gaming session.
Like yourself i have also been worried about battery wear and after 5 months AIDA64 reports 0% Battery wear. I always used AC unless i am out and about.
As for performance for myself i don't see any throttle on my GTX970M's performance when its using the battery however higher end cards likes the 980M and 980 will be different i would think, and wouldn't be able to comment futher on that either as i don't have a system with them cards in.
However you can look at it this way i have a 230w PSU on my system to which uses the battery for time to time when dealing with a heavy load, the supplied power would be cleaner then the 230w PSU going nuts and frying.
