New owner of this MSI laptop ; purchased from Newegg, having CONSTANT problems re: the 1070 gpu. What is happening is that there are constant black screen crashes where i cannot do anything, with a looping audio sound. I would have to use the power button to hard reset to get things going.

The error codes are nvlkmdm errors , code 4401s in the event viewer, and sometimes it would be related to firmware stops working?

Its been happening no matter what i change: fresh reinstall, older drivers, tdr delay reg edits, using fresh Windows 10 reinstall, updated to newest Windows 10 anniversary edition , updated all drivers using IOBit, etc

Should i RMA this and hope i get lucky? Anyone else getting similar errors? Im pretty pissed and apalled honestly by Nvidia drivers, and the relative future absence of my new laptop being RMAd.

Is this an MSI issue? Nvidia driver issue? Nvidia/MSI/Windows interaction issue? Im ticked because im coming from an Nvidia 650M, so yeah, been kind of waiting to get good deals and now that i got one im annoyed this is happening to me.

uhhh no.. this is not a nvidia driver issue. If you reinstalled windows fresh without MSI's crap pre loaded and it still does this then there is a hardware issue that needs to be RMAd (I guess it is to late to do a return?).

Well okay , and no i am still able to RMA it. The only reason i made the thread was because i was at my wits end and didnt want the issue to be with the laptop itself: it works wonderfully except for the gpu related issues. And ive been seeing recent problems with people not able to install the newest driver and such (most recent driver says no compatible hardware found),so i wanted to blame the easiest problem i could find which is Nvidia. Im pretty much planning to RMA it this coming week, but like i said, i wanted to avoid the issue if at all possible.

RMA != Return... an RMA is going to be a repair job. Is it to late to just return it for a new one? Edit: Well no..I guess new egg calls returns RMA as well.

But yea laptops borked from the start... get a new one if at all possible. :)

Thanks for the response ; yeah Newegg is different. Im going to do the return tomorrow and see what ends up happening. The more i look the more im guessing (or hoping) its an internal issue and i get a replacement. I went ballistic because a whoooole lot of issues stemmed from Nvidias drivers this past month: high idle clock speeds, geforce experience performance, performance with recent AAA titles.

I just purchased the GT72VR 7RE and it was giving me problems with crashing to a black screen and then desktop on all games while plugged in. I finally figured it out I believe, based on a tip I found. Mine came with an optional 120hz 5ms 17.3in display. I set the refresh to 60hz via a customized resolution through the nvidia control panel. It is working great so far and the issues seem to be gone. Anything above that and I've had problems. I tried 85hz, 100hz, and the default 120hz of course. It is unstable on anything other than 60hz for whatever reason. It seems like the card is working beyond its boost limit when above 60z, why I don't know because the hardware should be able to handle it without problems seeing as the gtx 1070 is less than a year old but it does. Probably related to the way it's being used by the software. This was the only fix I could get to work. Downclocking the card worked for a while but it would eventually spike on something and crash and it was hit and miss at best. If you are unhappy waiting for a better fix than this you should RMA, there are a lot of people doing so and I was about to but I think it'll be something that will be worked out better with time.

Terrible laptops, had 2 of em now and same issue, black screen, constant stutter, iv been on an MSI rampage tbh lol but u know, i love the laptop just to many issues to be dealing with at that price, RMA my second one and asked for refund, the more that go back im joping MSI actually sort the issue out there end. Somebody on the MSI forum sent me Vbios update that sorts the crashing screen but will lock ur card at stock rates with no boost, meaning its a power issue to the card i reckon, boosting to much. Hit up the MSI forum if u want to try the Vbios, i just dont see why i have to basically hack a mission to get it to work. Product is a complete fail, good luck thougj mate, hope u get a good one :)

I've seen 3 cases of this in the UK all ended up RMAing. MSI's repair note mentioned either new GPU or new motherboard.

Return to store or RMA that mother.

Can you link me the or help me to find the information on the Vbios update? I would be happy with my card running on stock rates.

I have the GT73vr 6re sli verison and while it will run 3dmark firestrike with no issue, games will cause the screen to go black and freeze. I've been on the msi forum and there's even a link to the overclock uk forum as well about this issue. I wonder if the power brick isn't powerful enough while gaming?? Well since I opened up the bottom, the warranty is voided so now I'm not sure what to do. I've had it since 2-15-17 and I'm not sure newegg will take it back either.... I might be SoL.

Here's the link to the issue on msi. There's another user that linked up the overclock forum on the first page.

Vbios 86.04.5B.0082 will fix the problem. It is a overclock/voltage issue. If you download this bios it will reset the card to nvidias factory setting before it was modified for msi. It will run great and solve the issue but will be maxed at the build specification until the pascal vbios editor is out and you can make your own custom vbios with a personalized over clock. I have the file and would be happy to share it under the aggrement that you are responsible for any risk of damage involved in it's use. It worked for me and many others that found the solution on the MSI forum.

Thanks I tried the 86.0435B.00.0A bios and that one works fine. I'm not sure what the difference is between the this one and that one but I'm fine with it because I got a working laptop now.

Where did you find this vbios file? I'm having the exact same problem.
