    Hi guys,

    I bought a GT72VR-6RE.
My panel is 120hz. I thought I would get G-sync (I'd rather chose G sync than 120hz) but it does not show up.

    I updated twice :
    - the bios to the latest one on MSI Support
    - the vbios

And downloaded the very last drivers from Nvidia.

    My question is :
    - G-sync on my laptop is software locked ?
or my screen just doesn't support it ?

Is there any way we can unlock it ?

Thanks a lot for your response.

Unfortunately, it isn't something you can unlock on it (at least as far as I know). The screen has to support G-Sync as well as the graphics card.

Nvidia used to have a kit for desktop monitor which confirmed that you do need H/W support.
    [ Link]

Additionally, the driver needs to support the monitor and opens up G-Sync option for you to enable.

Ok thanks a lot for your responses guys !

What do you think is better between 120hz without G-Sync and 75 hz/100hz with G-sync ?
    I still don't know what's better.

    Thanks a lot !

I'd probably take 120hz myself. Games will look smoother with a higher refresh rate. GSync really helps when you can't get higher frame rates to prevent screen tearing (I'm drawing a blank today, but GSync works between 30 and 60 frames mostly, right?). Maybe it depends a little bit on what you play, if you play some of the major eSports type games (League, Overwatch, DOTA) that aren't as demanding, then you would probably do good with higher refresh rates. GSync might be a bit more of an important feature if you play more demanding titles and down the road, after the system has aged and maybe can't quite keep up with getting higher frame rates.

That's going to depend on the application. G-Sync is better suited for maybe a 1060 and in situations where the in-game FPS drop below the screen's refresh rate.

On a 1070 or a 1080, you're more likely to run games at an FPS that exceeds the screen refresh rate, in which case VSync is more useful then (to eliminate screen tearing), but G-Sync not as much.

Some of the GT72VR did not come with G-Sync certified panels but most of them do now.
Here are the US models that have G-Sync panels.

    GT72VR Dominator-032 (60Hz + G-Sync)
    GT72VR Dominator Pro-015 (60Hz + G-Sync)
    GT72VR Dominator Pro-288 (120Hz + G-Sync)
    GT72VR Dominator-033 (60Hz + G-Sync)
    GT72VR Dominator-063 (60Hz + G-Sync)
    GT72VR Dominator-286 (120Hz + G-Sync)

Again, thx a lot to all of you who responded, that's really cool :)

@SoldierRBT : my laptop does not come with the G-sync feature (which I think is weird) : I was asking how we could add a feature that was not factory included.
@Kevin@GenTechPC : I'm using a laptop ;) but thx anyway for your researches. I appreciate.
    @Prostar Computer @pat@XOTICPC : yeah that makes sense : I have a GT72VR 6RE 273XFR (from France) : the screen comes with the 120 hz feature but no G-sync. I have a GTX 1070 though.

Hummm... I'm still not decided yet :D

In order for Gsync to work you need the following:
1/ G-Sync enabled GPU with Gsync VBIOS
    2/ G-Sync enabled SBIOS
    3/ G-sync supported LCD panel
    So check these 3 items.

120Hz would be better if you're into fast paced/fps type games that would benefit from less input lag. While G-Sync/FreeSync as well as Fast Sync you will see fluidity in gaming when you cant produce as much fps. So if you play regular games or play games higher quality yet average fps then you will benefit from the Syncs. If you produce high enough fps and play a lot of games that require fast response then you will benefit from the higher refresh rate with no Syncs added. Of course these things tend to be minuscule for the average gamer/user.

Thank for the explanation. Is the 1070 powerful enough to run most games on ultra at 120+fps?

It will depend on the game engine if it supports higher frame rates but yes, the 10 series is definitely a step up from the previous gen. 1060s are good for 1080p, 1070 is good for 1440p as well as some 4K, and 1080/X is good for 4K.

So yes 120Hz paired up with a 1070 is a good combination because the 1070 will be able to produce that much, you'll only need to push out maybe 80-90+fps to notice the difference, anything below that you may see sluggish performance.. thats the only con I see with high refresh rate monitors hehe. But for fps shooters.. you'll be gold :)

I have a GT72VR myself, but mine only has the 60/75hz+G-sync screen installed. Any chance you could tell me the hardware ID or model number of the panel installed in your laptop? I would give up G-sync in a heartbeat to have 120hz instead. Thanks!

MSI uses the N173HHE-G32 (CMN1747). Review of the screen HERE, in the display section.

If you want to try to find the 1440p 120Hz screen Clevo and Alienware have, it's the B173QTN01.0 (AUO1096). Review HERE.

That is very helpful, thank you. Is there any chance that you'd know if I need to swap the video cable to use one of these screens?

I believe G sync might be an issue if your machine uses optimus, which the newest GT72 does right?

Nothing so horror filled as Optimus, the GT72VR is dGPU only :)
